For Grand Theft Auto VI, either current PS5 format is a valid choice. The official US listing identifies the game as a PS5 title and does not distinguish performance between the disc-equipped console and the Digital Edition. Buy the disc model if you want physical PS5/PS4 games, used or borrowed copies, or movie discs. Buy the Digital Edition if you are comfortable purchasing games from the PlayStation Store and it is cheaper in your market. A compatible slim Digital Edition can gain a detachable drive later, but that adds cost, requires a specific model and needs an internet connection for pairing.
The short answer
GTA VI will not run better merely because a PS5 has a disc drive. Sony’s current comparison presents the disc console and Digital Edition as PS5 hardware options, while the official Grand Theft Auto VI listing simply specifies PS5. No official source reviewed for this guide identifies a different frame-rate target, resolution, feature set or loading advantage for one format.

- Choose the Digital Edition if you buy downloads, do not need disc movies and the local price is lower after considering any storage or drive upgrade you may want.
- Choose a compatible slim Digital Edition plus a later drive only if you have verified the console model and the combined price still makes sense. Sony does not say that every older Digital Edition accepts the detachable drive.
The US PlayStation Store page currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026. At the time of the listing checked, its digital Standard Edition was $79.99 and its digital Ultimate Edition was $99.99. Those are US digital prices, not evidence of a worldwide price or a physical release.

What the official GTA VI listing confirms
The live US PlayStation Store product page identifies Grand Theft Auto VI as a PS5 game with a scheduled release date of November 19, 2026. It shows digital Standard and Ultimate products. The page does not establish that a retail disc edition will be sold, either in the United States or elsewhere, so do not buy a console on the assumption that a physical GTA VI copy is guaranteed in your country. Check the current listing and local retailers before launch.
The same page describes the game as a single-player experience and labels offline play as enabled. That label should not be read as a promise that every feature works without a connection: the legal text says some features may require internet access or other requirements. A digital purchase grants a license to the digital product rather than transferring ownership of a physical object. See the official US PlayStation Store listing for the current editions, terms and availability.
Sony Interactive Entertainment marketing executive Mary Yee wrote that, through Sony’s partnership with Rockstar Games, “Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” That is a statement about the PS5 platform and its immersive features, not a claim that the disc-equipped PS5 outperforms the Digital Edition. The quote appears in Sony’s PlayStation.Blog announcement.

Disc PS5 versus Digital Edition: the real differences
Sony’s current US comparison gives the two formats different media access and listed storage capacities. The table below uses the capacities printed on Sony’s product page; they are not promises about usable free space or the eventual size of GTA VI.

Does a disc drive make GTA VI run better?
There is no documented performance distinction to justify that conclusion. Both consoles are PS5 systems, and the official GTA VI product page does not provide separate performance specifications for disc and digital hardware. A disc is an installation source and license check; it does not turn the console into a higher-performance model.
Both formats can play digital PS5 games. On the disc console, a digital GTA VI purchase behaves as it would on the Digital Edition. If a physical GTA VI release appears in your market, the disc model would be able to use it, while a drive-less Digital Edition would not. That is a media-access difference, not a graphics or frame-rate difference.

Sony lists 1TB for the disc console and 825GB for the Digital Edition in its current US comparison. These are advertised capacities, not the amount of empty space available after system software and reserved partitions. The eventual GTA VI installation size has not been officially established in the material available for this comparison, so predicting how much space the game will consume would be speculation.
The storage gap matters most to an all-digital player who keeps several large games installed. A disc does not eliminate storage use: a disc-based PS5 game normally installs data to the console, while the disc serves as the license and distribution medium. If you routinely rotate games, you may prefer deleting and redownloading digital titles or using external storage for supported games; neither option changes the format decision for GTA VI itself.
Use the listed capacities as one input in your local price calculation, not as a promise of a specific number of simultaneously installed games. Confirm the current model specifications at Sony’s comparison page before ordering.

Who should buy the disc-equipped PS5?
You want access to physical PS5 and PS4 games
The disc console accepts compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs as well as digital purchases. That gives you more than one way to obtain a game: a new boxed copy, a used copy, a borrowed copy or a sale at a retailer that does not sell downloads. Whether those options save money depends on local availability and the prices you actually find; the hardware specification alone cannot guarantee a discount.
You watch physical movies
The built-in drive is useful for compatible video discs. Sony’s detachable-drive listing specifies playback support for 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media, so a disc-equipped console can also serve as a movie player. A Digital Edition without a drive cannot read those discs.
You want the least uncertainty about future physical releases
The US GTA VI listing checked for this article shows digital products and does not confirm a boxed edition. A disc console keeps the option open if a physical release is announced later in your market. It does not guarantee that such a release will exist, nor does it make a physical copy cheaper.
You value resale or lending
Physical ownership can make lending or reselling a compatible game possible where local rules and retailer practices allow it. A digital license generally remains tied to the purchasing account and is not an item you can hand to another player. Consider this only if you regularly use those behaviors; paying extra for a drive that will never be used is poor value.
Who should buy the Digital Edition?
You buy every game digitally
If your library already comes from the PlayStation Store and you do not need discs, the Digital Edition provides the same PS5 platform for GTA VI. You can preload eligible digital games, switch titles without changing discs and keep your purchases attached to one account. The trade-off is dependence on digital storefront access, download capacity and the account terms attached to each license.

You want the lower total cost
There is no dependable like-for-like console price in the evidence available here because Sony’s prices, bundles and promotions change. Compare the actual checkout prices in your country on the day you buy. Include taxes, delivery, game bundles and any storage accessory you would otherwise purchase. A cheaper console is not cheaper if you immediately add a drive that you could have bought built in.
You do not use movie discs
Removing the drive matters only if you would use it. If all of your games and films are digital or streamed, paying for a drive adds no useful capability for your GTA VI purchase.
Can you add a disc drive later?
Yes, but only for the model groups Sony identifies. The current US accessory page names slim Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups, as well as PS5 Pro, as compatible with the detachable drive. Do not assume that an older Digital Edition has the required attachment point or firmware support.
- Read the console model number before buying. Check the label, packaging or system information and verify that it is CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or another group explicitly listed by Sony. If the number is not listed, treat compatibility as unconfirmed.
- Compare the complete cost. Add the drive price, taxes and any shipping to the Digital Edition price. Compare that total with the local price of a disc-equipped PS5, including any bundle differences.
- Install the drive with the console powered down. Follow the physical fitting directions supplied with the drive and console model. Do not force a cover or connector that does not align.
- Connect the console to the internet for pairing. Sony’s setup guidance requires an internet connection to pair the detachable drive with the console. Complete the on-screen setup before relying on disc playback.
- Test a compatible disc. Insert a known-compatible game or movie disc after pairing. If it is not recognized, recheck the model, seating and system updates before assuming the drive is defective.
Sony’s detachable-drive product page lists the supported model groups, while the official setup instructions cover the installation and pairing process. Compatibility and pricing can differ outside the United States.

How to calculate the better GTA VI purchase
Use a three-part calculation rather than comparing the console stickers alone:

- Start with the local console prices. Record the current price of the disc model and Digital Edition in the same storage, bundle and warranty context. Do not mix a bare console with a bundle that includes games or accessories.
- Add the value of media access. If you expect to buy several used or discounted discs, borrow games or play physical movies, assign that capability a realistic value. If you will never use it, assign zero.
- Add any planned upgrade. For a Digital Edition, include the detachable drive if you think you will want discs later. Use the exact drive price and confirm that the model is compatible.
- Account for storage behavior. The disc model is listed with 1TB and the Digital Edition with 825GB, but neither figure equals free space. Decide whether your download habits justify the larger listed capacity or future storage management.
- Check the game format in your market. The US listing currently shows digital products. A physical GTA VI release is not established by that page, so do not assign it a resale value or assume a boxed launch copy exists without a current local listing.
This calculation produces a personal value judgment, not a universal winner. The disc model is worth its premium only when you will use the access it provides; the Digital Edition is the better buy when digital-only behavior and the local price outweigh that flexibility.
Prices, editions and the GTA+ preorder notice
On the US PlayStation Store page checked for this article, the digital Standard Edition was listed at $79.99 and the digital Ultimate Edition at $99.99. These figures describe the displayed US digital products at that time. They should not be generalized to other countries, future promotions or an unconfirmed physical edition.
The listing also described a preorder offer involving one month of GTA+. Its terms include automatic renewal after the promotional month and a redemption deadline. If you use that offer, read the current terms and cancel before renewal if you do not want the subscription to continue. Offers and conditions can change; use the live store page rather than relying on an old screenshot or article.
A forward-looking digital-format notice
Sony’s US buy-now page carries a notice saying newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase in digital format only from January 2028, while discs for games released before then can continue to be played on the console. This is a forward-looking platform notice on that page, not a statement that GTA VI will or will not receive a physical release. GTA VI’s announced November 19, 2026 date places it before the stated cutoff, but release formats remain a matter for the publisher and each market. Recheck the notice and local product listings when you purchase.
The notice also does not remove the value of a disc drive for existing PS5 and PS4 libraries, movie playback or second-hand games. It simply means that a future digital-only policy could affect how you obtain later releases.
Decision checklist
- Do I already own compatible PS5 or PS4 discs?
- Will I buy used, borrowed or boxed games during this console generation?
- Do I watch 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD movies?
- Is the disc console’s local price premium smaller than the value I place on those uses?
- If I choose Digital Edition, is my exact model one of Sony’s compatible CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim groups?
- Have I included the detachable-drive price and internet-pairing requirement in my calculation?
- Am I treating the US digital GTA VI prices as regional, time-specific figures rather than global prices?
- Have I avoided assuming that a physical GTA VI copy is available until an official local listing confirms it?
Bottom line for GTA VI buyers
Buy the disc-equipped PS5 when physical games, movie discs, lending, resale or future format flexibility matter to you. Buy the Digital Edition when your library is digital, you do not need disc playback and its local price is lower. Either console is the same PS5 platform for the officially listed GTA VI experience; the drive changes what you can insert into the console, not how the game is documented to perform.
