No—PS5 Digital does not specifically require Wi‑Fi. You can connect it to the internet with an Ethernet/LAN cable instead. Internet access is still part of the intended setup, and the disc-free console downloads games from PlayStation Store, so Wi‑Fi and internet service are not the same requirement. PlayStation documents both connection methods in its support instructions: wireless Wi‑Fi and wired LAN.
The answer in practical terms
A PS5 Digital Edition can use either a wireless network or a wired network. If your console is near a router, modem-router, network switch or another suitable Ethernet connection, plug in a LAN cable and configure the wired option in the PS5’s Network settings. You do not need a wireless router signal specifically.

You do, however, need internet access for the digital-console experience PlayStation describes: first-time setup includes an internet connection, and games for the Digital Edition are obtained as downloads rather than from discs. A cable is only the path between the console and your network; it is not internet service by itself.

Wi‑Fi and wired LAN compared
These are the two connection methods PlayStation documents for a PS5. The important difference is how the console reaches your network, not whether the console is a “Wi‑Fi” or “non‑Wi‑Fi” model.
| Option | What you need | PS5 setup path | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi | An available wireless network and its password when protected | Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, then select the displayed wireless network | No cable between the console and network equipment; the PS5 communicates wirelessly |
| Wired LAN | A LAN/Ethernet cable and a suitable network port or router connection | Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect | Uses a physical cable instead of a wireless link |
PlayStation’s instructions establish the two setup routes but do not promise that one is always faster or more reliable. Your cable length, router, network traffic and local wireless conditions determine the practical result. See PlayStation’s connection instructions.
What the Digital Edition requires
It has no disc drive
PlayStation describes the PS5 Digital Edition as an all-digital console without a disc drive. Games are downloaded from PlayStation Store rather than installed from physical game media. That design is why an internet connection is central to setup and game acquisition. PlayStation 5 product overview.

Internet access is different from Wi‑Fi
“Internet required” does not mean “Wi‑Fi required.” Wi‑Fi is one wireless way to reach your internet service. Wired LAN is another way. If your home network reaches the internet through an Ethernet port, the PS5 can use that port with the wired setup path.
An account is part of the intended setup
PlayStation’s product information says the disc-free console requires an internet connection and a PlayStation account. The exact screens can change with system software and region, but you should have your account details available when setting up a new console. PlayStation’s PS5 getting-started guide includes internet setup as part of the initial process.

How to connect without Wi‑Fi using wired LAN
A wired connection is the direct answer if you do not want to use wireless networking. You need a LAN cable long enough to reach the PS5 and a live network port connected to internet service.
- Connect one end of the LAN cable to the PS5’s network port.
- Connect the other end to a suitable router, modem-router or network port that provides access to your internet connection.
- On the PS5, open Settings.
- Go to Network and then Settings.
- Select Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Set Up Wired LAN.
- Select Connect and follow the on-screen prompts.
This is PlayStation’s documented wired path. The cable replaces the wireless link; it does not replace a router, modem or internet subscription. If the port you use is not connected to a working network, the PS5 will not gain internet access merely because a cable is attached. PlayStation’s wired-LAN steps.
What internet access is used for
Initial console setup
PlayStation’s getting-started guidance includes setting up an internet connection when preparing a new PS5. Connect by Wi‑Fi or wired LAN, sign in or create the required account, and complete the setup screens shown on your console. Because software versions and regional flows can change, follow the labels currently displayed rather than relying on an older walkthrough. Open the current getting-started guide.
Downloading games
The Digital Edition obtains games from PlayStation Store. A download therefore requires internet access, regardless of whether the connection is wireless or wired. If you are deciding where to place the console, plan for whichever connection can consistently reach your network: a wireless signal or a physical LAN cable.

Digital-console use also involves PlayStation account services and software or game downloads. The official product material establishes the need for internet access and an account; it does not define one universal offline policy for every title or every feature.

Can a PS5 Digital play games offline?
Do not treat “does not need Wi‑Fi” as a promise that every digital game works offline. PlayStation’s public product and setup pages confirm that the console is disc-free, uses downloaded games, and is intended to be connected to the internet, but they do not establish offline availability for every game.
Offline behavior can depend on the individual game, how its license is checked, whether the game has been fully downloaded, and whether a feature is online by design. Before buying or relying on a specific title during an internet outage, check that game’s current requirements on its PlayStation Store listing or the publisher’s support page. That is a title-by-title question, not a blanket property of the PS5 Digital hardware.
A safe expectation is:
- You need internet access to complete the intended digital setup and download games.
- You should not assume a game can be launched offline merely because it is installed.
- Online modes may require both an internet connection and any subscription condition specified for that mode.
Internet access versus PlayStation Plus
These are separate requirements. Internet access is the network connection used for setup, account services and downloading digital games. PlayStation Plus is a subscription service whose requirements can apply to online multiplayer.
The cited PlayStation UK product page states that paid PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer. That statement is specifically from the UK product page, so check the current terms for your own country and the particular game. It does not mean you need PlayStation Plus merely to choose Wi‑Fi or wired LAN in Network settings. See the UK product page’s subscription note.
Choosing the right connection for your room
Choose Wi‑Fi when
- The console is not close to a network port.
- You want to avoid routing a cable across the room.
- Your existing wireless network reaches the console adequately.
Choose wired LAN when
- You have a convenient network port or router connection near the PS5.
- You do not want the console to use a wireless connection.
- You can run a LAN cable safely without creating a trip hazard.
PlayStation does not rank the two methods by guaranteed speed or reliability. Make the decision based on the equipment and layout you actually have, rather than assuming that every home will see the same result.
Troubleshooting when the PS5 will not get online
The PS5 cannot see your wireless network
- Confirm that the wireless network is operating and that other devices can see it.
- Move the console within a practical range of the wireless equipment.
- Return to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection and scan the listed networks again.
- If the network is protected, enter its password exactly as configured.
The wired option is unavailable or fails
- Check that the LAN cable is fully seated at both ends.
- Verify that the wall jack, router port or network switch port is connected to a working network.
- Reopen Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN and select Connect.
- Try a known-good cable or another active port if your network equipment provides one.
The console connects but a game still will not work
Separate a console connection problem from a game requirement. Confirm that the game has finished downloading and installing, then check that title’s current online or offline requirements. A successful LAN or Wi‑Fi connection does not guarantee that every game mode is available without the game’s own services or subscription conditions.
Bottom line for buyers and new owners
PS5 Digital does not need Wi‑Fi specifically. It needs internet access for the disc-free setup and downloaded-game model described by PlayStation, and you can supply that access through Wi‑Fi or a wired LAN cable. Use Set Up Wired LAN > Connect when you have a suitable cable and network port; otherwise use the wireless network setup. Treat offline play and online multiplayer as separate, game- and region-dependent questions.
