Choose the Digital Edition if you buy games digitally and do not need disc playback. Sony’s US product page lists a 1TB disc-drive PS5 and an 825GB Digital Edition, but model variants and bundles differ; check the listing for your region before buying.
What changes between the two PS5 options?
| Your need | PS5 with disc drive | Digital Edition |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 or PS5 game discs | Plays compatible game discs | Cannot use game discs without a compatible add-on drive |
| Buying games | Physical discs and digital downloads | Digital downloads |
| Eligible PS4 disc upgrade | Can access eligible offers; the disc is still needed to play | Cannot use a PS4 disc to claim and play the disc-based upgrade |
| Movie discs | Drive-equipped models play supported formats | No disc playback unless you add a compatible drive |
| Storage shown on Sony’s reviewed US page | 1TB | 825GB |
These are capability differences, not a guarantee that physical games will cost less or that either console is always the better value. Current prices and bundles vary, so compare the exact local listings rather than assuming a fixed price premium.
When a disc-drive PS5 makes sense
- You already own PS4 or PS5 game discs and want to keep playing them.
- You want the option to buy physical copies, borrow games, or pass discs along.
- You want to play supported movie discs.
- You want access to eligible disc-based PS4-to-PS5 upgrade offers.
Sony says the majority of PS4 games are backward compatible with PS5, but that is not a promise about every title. Check compatibility for a specific game before relying on its disc. PS3 game discs are not supported. PlayStation’s PS5 backward compatibility guidance explains the limits.
When the Digital Edition is the better fit
The Digital Edition suits you if your library and future purchases are digital and you do not need disc-based movie playback. It has no included drive, so PS4 and PS5 game discs cannot be used on it as sold. As a result, choose it only if losing access to disc functions is acceptable—or if your exact model supports Sony’s separately sold add-on drive.

Can you upgrade a PS4 disc game to a PS5 version?
Some PS4 games offer an upgrade to a digital PS5 version, but eligibility and any upgrade price depend on the title. For a disc-based offer, you need a PS5 with a disc drive: the original PS4 disc must remain inserted each time you play the upgraded version. Sony Support states, “PS4® game discs can’t be used with the PS5 Digital Edition.” PlayStation Support’s upgrade instructions cover the process and conditions.
Can you add a disc drive later?
Sony sells a detachable drive for specified slim PS5 Digital Edition model groups, and its US buying page also lists PS5 Pro compatibility. The accessory is sold separately, supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and supported game discs, and needs an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. Compatibility is model-specific: match the model number on your console to Sony’s current compatibility information before ordering. Sony’s disc drive setup and compatibility page provides the details.

A practical way to decide
- List the discs you already use. Include PS4 and PS5 games, plus any movie discs you want to watch. If you need those discs, choose a drive-equipped PS5 or verify that your exact console model supports the add-on drive.
- Consider how you get games. If borrowing or buying physical copies matters to you, the built-in drive keeps that option available. If you buy and play digitally, the Digital Edition covers that use.
- Check any PS4 upgrade you care about. Confirm the game’s eligibility and price; an eligible disc-based upgrade still requires the original disc for play.
- Compare exact local models and bundles. Sony’s reviewed US page lists 1TB for the drive-equipped PS5 and 825GB for the Digital Edition, but those figures should not be treated as universal across model variants and regions. Check the live listing and model number.
