A disc usually installs game data directly, but a physical edition can still require an internet download before installation or play. Patches, optional add-ons and online features are separate requirements.
How do I check whether a PlayStation game disc includes the full game or requires a download?
- Identify the exact release. Note the game title, PS4 or PS5 version, edition and region. A general statement about physical games cannot establish what is on every release.
- Check the publisher’s page for an explicit requirement. Look for wording that says an internet connection is required to download and install the game, or that a download is needed to play. For example, Bethesda Support says that all physical PS5 editions of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle include a disc, but that broadband internet is required to download and install the game: Bethesda’s PS5 disc and download information.
- Distinguish the base-game install from extras. PlayStation’s installation guidance describes game data installing from the disc; it also treats add-ons separately. A patch or optional add-on does not by itself mean the base game must be downloaded. See PlayStation’s disc-game installation instructions.
- Test your copy offline, if you can. Disconnect the console from the internet, insert the disc and let installation finish. Then try to launch the game. If installation or launch requires downloading base-game data, the disc alone is not sufficient for that use. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that every game supports offline play.
- Read the result narrowly. If the game launches offline after installing, that establishes only that the installed build launched offline in that test. It does not show that later updates, DLC, online modes or server-dependent features are included on the disc or available offline.
Can I install a PS4 or PS5 game from disc without internet?
PlayStation’s support pages describe inserting a disc to install a disc game, and say the disc must remain inserted to play. Some releases use two discs: the console prompts you to use the data disc first, then swap to the play disc. Follow the console’s prompts. Whether a particular game can be fully installed and launched without internet depends on that release. An offline test can help answer the question for your copy, but it does not establish that online features work or that a game will never need an update.
What kind of download does the warning mean?

Does a physical PlayStation game still need a download?
Sometimes. A disc may contain the game data used for installation, but that fact alone does not prove that every file required to install or play a particular release is on the disc. Bethesda’s stated requirement for the physical PS5 edition of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a concrete example: the edition includes a disc and still requires a broadband download to install the game.

PlayStation’s 2013 North American PS4 FAQ said PS4 did not require a persistent internet connection to play games and that users could play single-player titles offline. That statement is specifically about PS4 and dates from 2013; it does not establish the disc contents or offline behavior of every PS4 release, and it should not be treated as a blanket claim about PS5. The title alone may not be enough. Provide the exact game name, whether the disc is for PS4 or PS5, and the edition (and region if known). Then check the publisher’s statement for whether a download is required for the base-game install or first launch, rather than for a patch, add-on or online feature. Without those details, it is not possible to confirm what a particular disc contains.
