Choose the PS5 Disc Edition if you own game discs, expect to buy physical or used games, or want to play supported disc movies. Choose the Digital Edition if your games are all digital and you do not need disc media. The two editions are not listed with a gameplay performance difference in Sony’s CFI-21XX manual, but storage, disc compatibility and upgrade options vary by model and region.
PS5 Disc or Digital: which is better for your situation?
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You own PS4 game discs or plan to buy physical or used games | Disc Edition | PS4 discs cannot be played on the Digital Edition. A disc-drive PS5 supports PS5 and PS4 game discs. |
| You buy games digitally and do not use disc movies | Digital Edition | It is designed for downloads from PlayStation Store. Some slim Digital Edition models can add a compatible drive later. |
| You want to watch supported UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD discs | Disc Edition, or a compatible slim Digital Edition with the add-on drive | Drive compatibility depends on the console’s model code; the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot use disc media. |
| You want more listed internal storage on Sony’s current US comparison | Disc Edition | The current US listing gives the PS5 1TB and the Digital Edition 825GB. These are model-specific specifications, not a promise of usable free space. |
| You are choosing only for gaming performance | No clear winner in the cited specifications | Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists matching CPU, GPU and memory specifications for the two editions. |
| You want the lowest lifetime cost | Depends on your local prices and buying habits | Console prices, game prices and resale value vary; there is no established universal break-even point. |
Can the PS5 Disc Edition play digital games?
Yes. The Disc Edition supports both game discs and digital downloads from PlayStation Store. Sony describes it as able to “Play PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs” and also download digital PS5 and PS4 games from the store. A disc drive gives you an additional way to play; it does not prevent digital purchases.
Can you play PS4 discs on PS5 Digital Edition?
No. Sony says PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. If you have a disc-drive PS5, compatible PS4 games can be played from disc, and the disc must remain inserted while you play. Check Sony’s PS4 backward compatibility guidance for details.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition?
Some models support a separately sold detachable drive; not every Digital Edition does. Sony identifies the CFI-ZDD1-series drive for specified CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups and PS5 Pro. The drive needs an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive page lists compatible models and supported formats.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media, according to Sony support. Before buying an add-on drive, check the model code on the console and confirm it appears in Sony’s compatibility information. Do not assume that a Digital Edition can be upgraded just because a detachable drive exists.
Does the PS5 Digital Edition have less storage?
On Sony’s current US product listing, the PS5 is listed with 1TB of storage and the Digital Edition with 825GB. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual shows the same capacities for those model variants. These figures describe the listed internal storage, not how much space is available for installed games, and should not be generalized to every PS5 generation or regional SKU. Check the exact model in Sony’s US PS5 comparison or the relevant regional product page.

Can a PS5 play Blu-ray movies?
A supported disc-drive PS5 can play Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. The same formats are available on a compatible slim Digital Edition when the separately sold drive is installed. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc-media support. See Sony’s disc and USB media support page for format and model details.
Is there a gaming performance difference?
Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists the same CPU, GPU and 16GB memory entries for its PS5 and Digital Edition columns. In that manual’s specifications, the relevant distinctions are the drive and listed storage capacity, not a documented gameplay-performance advantage for the disc model. This comparison applies to the CFI-21XX generation covered by the manual; check the specification sheet for another model generation rather than assuming every configuration is identical.

Which version is cheaper over time?
There is no reliable universal answer. The total depends on your local console prices and whether you buy new, discounted, used or digital games. Physical games may offer buying or resale options that digital purchases do not, while a Digital Edition avoids paying for a drive you do not use. Without current regional prices and the games you actually buy, a fixed savings or break-even claim would be misleading.

Check the model before you buy
“Digital Edition” covers different hardware configurations. Sony’s current US page and drive compatibility information distinguish the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition from compatible slim Digital Edition model groups. Confirm the console’s full model code, regional listing, included accessories and drive compatibility before purchasing or planning an upgrade.
