For GTA 6 alone, neither PS5 configuration has a format advantage: Rockstar says the boxed “physical” version is a download code, not a disc. You can play the game on either a PS5 with a disc drive or a Digital Edition, provided you redeem the code and download it. Choose the disc-drive PS5 if you also want to play supported physical PS4 or PS5 games; choose Digital Edition if you are happy buying games digitally.
Does the physical GTA 6 copy come on a disc?
No. Rockstar says the boxed retail version contains a code for the digital download and that no disc is included. So buying that edition does not give you a disc to insert into a disc-drive PS5; you redeem the code and download the game. Rockstar’s GTA VI format and edition information was last updated August 18, 2026.
The Rockstar Store currently lists November 19, 2026 as GTA 6’s release date. That is the announced date as of October 7, 2026, not a claim that the game has already launched. Rockstar also says digital preloads begin November 12, 2026 at local midnight. Check the code’s territory restrictions and buy from a retailer serving the country associated with your PlayStation account.
Can you play GTA 6 on PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes. Rockstar lists PS5 as a GTA 6 platform, and the game’s boxed code is redeemed for a digital download. Sony describes the Digital Edition as an all-digital console with no disc drive by default; it plays downloaded games. A disc drive is therefore not required for GTA 6’s announced boxed code or digital version.

What does the PS5 disc drive change?
The drive matters for other supported physical media, not for a different version or demonstrated performance level of GTA 6. Sony says its PS5 console with a drive plays PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs and also supports digital downloads. That makes it the more flexible option if you own physical games or expect to buy them.
Sony’s US product page lists the disc-drive PS5 at 1TB and the Digital Edition at 825GB. These are listed capacities, not estimates of available free space or GTA 6’s installation requirement. No reviewed official source states the game’s install size or establishes a frame-rate, graphics, or gameplay difference between these console configurations. Check Sony’s current PS5 product page for regional configurations and model details.
Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sometimes, depending on the exact console model. Sony lists a separately sold detachable drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro, and internet access is required to pair it during setup. Do not assume the accessory fits every Digital Edition: check the model number and Sony’s current compatibility details before buying.

| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing GTA 6 from its announced boxed retail version | Either | The box contains a digital download code, not a disc. |
| Playing physical PS4 or PS5 games | PS5 with disc drive | Sony says it plays supported PS4 and PS5 games on Blu-ray discs. |
| Buying games digitally and not using discs | Digital Edition | GTA 6 is available as a digital download, and the Digital Edition plays downloaded games. |
| Adding disc support later | Depends on model | The detachable drive supports specified slim Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro; it is sold separately and needs internet pairing at setup. |
| Choosing based on storage capacity | Compare exact listing | Sony’s US page lists 1TB for the disc-drive console and 825GB for Digital Edition; neither figure establishes GTA 6’s install size. |
Compare the current price of each console and any compatible drive in your region before deciding; prices and product configurations can vary. There is no evidence here to justify paying more for a disc-drive PS5 specifically to improve GTA 6 performance.
