You can use a PS5 DualSense controller on a Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 PC in two physical ways: a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth. The practical third method is what you do after connecting: verify and configure the game in Steam, because a paired controller is not automatically supported by every title. Use USB when you want the least setup or PC haptic feedback; use Bluetooth for cable-free play; then check the individual game’s controller support before troubleshooting anything else.
The three ways, at a glance
PlayStation documents USB and Bluetooth as the DualSense’s PC connection methods. Steam configuration is the third useful path in this guide, not a separate wireless protocol: it determines whether a particular Steam game recognizes the controller and which input layer it uses.

| Method | What you need | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB | A USB cable with a USB Type-C connector at the controller | Fastest setup, wired play, and games requiring USB for haptic feedback | The game still has to support the controller; cable and PC-port fit are your responsibility |
| Bluetooth | A Windows PC with Bluetooth enabled | Cable-free play and a cleaner desk | Some DualSense features on PC require USB, and pairing behavior changes when moving between devices |
| Steam game setup | A connected controller and the Steam client | Checking support before launch and configuring a Steam title | It is software configuration, not a third physical connection method |
What you need before connecting
- A DualSense wireless controller that is charged enough to stay on during setup.
- Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11. These are the Windows versions PlayStation lists for DualSense USB and Bluetooth compatibility.
- For the wired method, a USB cable that has a USB Type-C connector on the controller end and a plug that fits an available port on your PC.
- For Bluetooth, Bluetooth hardware in the PC and permission to open Windows Bluetooth settings. A Bluetooth adapter is not established as universally necessary; use the Bluetooth hardware your PC already provides unless it does not have Bluetooth.
- For the Steam method, the game installed in Steam and access to its store page or controller settings.
Do not assume that a cable included with a particular PS5 package will reach your computer or match every PC port arrangement. The requirement is simply a suitable USB connection from the DualSense to the computer.

USB is the most predictable starting point. It avoids wireless pairing menus, gives the controller a direct data connection, and is the route to recommend when a PC game requires USB for a DualSense feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Step-by-step USB setup
- Turn on the Windows PC and sign in.
- Plug the USB Type-C end of the cable into the port on the top of the DualSense.
- Plug the other end into a working USB port on the PC. If your computer has more than one port type, use one that accepts the cable’s connector without an adapter.
- Wait briefly for Windows to recognize the controller, then start the game you want to play.
- Open that game’s controller or input settings and select the controller if the title does not do so automatically.
A game not showing the controller at this point is not proof that the cable failed. Check whether the title supports a controller and whether it expects a particular input mode. Steam’s support label, described below, is a useful first check for Steam games.
When USB is the better choice
- PlayStation says haptic feedback on PC requires USB, when the game supports that feature.
- PlayStation’s PC accessory guidance says USB may be required for adaptive triggers in select games. Support remains game-dependent.
- You want the simplest first connection and do not want to manage a wireless battery.
- You are diagnosing a Bluetooth problem and need to separate wireless pairing issues from game-support issues.
Method 2: pair over Bluetooth
Bluetooth removes the cable after pairing, but the DualSense must be placed in pairing mode and selected from Windows’ Bluetooth device list. Follow the button sequence exactly; pressing only the PS button turns the controller on but does not put it into the required pairing state.
Put the controller into pairing mode
- Check the player indicator. If it is lit, hold the PS button until the controller turns off.
- Disconnect any USB cable from the controller. Leaving it connected can prevent the pairing sequence from behaving as expected.
- Press and hold the Create button, then press and hold the PS button as well.
- Keep both buttons held until the light bar begins to blink. The blinking light indicates that the DualSense is discoverable.
Select it in Windows
- Open Windows Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off, then choose the option to add a new Bluetooth device.
- Select the controller when it appears in the list. Windows may show the DualSense by its controller name.
- Wait for Windows to complete pairing. The light bar should blink and the player indicator should light when the connection succeeds.
- Launch a compatible game and check its input settings.
If Windows does not list the controller, repeat the sequence from the beginning: turn the controller off, unplug USB, hold Create and PS until the light bar blinks, and scan again. Pairing behavior matters when you move the DualSense between a PC and other devices, so do not expect it to remain simultaneously connected to several devices.

- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
When Bluetooth is the better choice
- You want to play without a cable across the desk or sofa.
- The game does not need the PC-only features that PlayStation says require USB.
- You are comfortable keeping the controller charged and reconnecting it when switching devices.
Method 3: check and configure the game in Steam
Connecting the hardware is only half the job. PlayStation notes that controller support varies by game, even when a DualSense is already connected. For a Steam title, inspect support before changing drivers or assuming the controller is defective.
Check support before installing or launching
- Open the game’s store page in Steam.
- Find the Controller Support label.
- Read whether Steam marks the game as Full Controller Support or Partial Controller Support.
- Use that information with the game’s own input notes. A Full label indicates broad controller operation in Steam, not a guarantee that every DualSense feature is implemented.
Partial support can mean that some menus, launchers, or in-game actions still expect a mouse and keyboard. It can also mean that the title recognizes a controller but does not expose every DualSense function. Treat the label as a compatibility signal, not as a promise about haptics, adaptive triggers, microphone use, or speaker output.
Configure a connected controller for the title
- Connect the DualSense by USB or pair it over Bluetooth first; Steam cannot configure hardware that Windows has not connected.
- Open the game’s controller settings in Steam and confirm that the DualSense appears as an available controller.
- Use the game’s recommended layout when one is supplied, or assign buttons in the title’s controller screen if its support is partial.
- Launch the game and test movement, camera control, face buttons, triggers, and menu navigation before starting a long session.
- If the game ignores the controller, return to its Steam page and verify the support label, then check the game’s own input menu. Do not call Steam Input a third connection method; it is an input-configuration layer applied after USB or Bluetooth.
USB versus Bluetooth: which should you choose?
| Decision | Choose USB | Choose Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Plug in and start; no pairing menu | Pair once through Windows and repeat the process when necessary after switching devices |
| Physical freedom | Cable limits where you sit | No cable between the controller and PC |
| PC haptic feedback | Required for haptic feedback when the game supports it | Do not assume haptics will work wirelessly on PC |
| Adaptive triggers | USB may be required in select supported games | Availability depends on the game and connection; PlayStation does not establish universal wireless support |
| Troubleshooting | Easier to isolate: inspect cable, port, and game support | Requires checking pairing mode, Bluetooth state, and game support |
What works on a Windows PC, and what does not
PlayStation lists DualSense USB and Bluetooth compatibility for Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. Once connected, the controller can control compatible games and apps, but compatibility is not all-or-nothing: one title may accept standard buttons while another also supports advanced effects.

- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
Haptic feedback
Haptic feedback is available on PC only when the game supports it, and PlayStation says a USB connection is required. A successful Bluetooth pairing therefore does not establish that haptics are available.
Recommended Free Tools
Adaptive triggers
Adaptive triggers are available when supported by the game. PlayStation’s PC guidance says USB may be required in select games, so check the title’s feature notes and switch to USB if the effect is absent over Bluetooth.
Microphone and speaker
The DualSense’s built-in microphone and speaker can be available on a Windows PC when the game supports them. A game that does not expose voice or audio through those devices will not gain the feature merely because Windows sees the controller.
Rank #4
- Bring gaming worlds to life - Feel your in-game actions and environment simulated through haptic feedback*. Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers*
- Find your voice, share your passion - Chat online through the built-in microphone. Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack. Record and broadcast your epic gaming moments with the create button
- A gaming icon in your hands - Enjoy a comfortable, evolved design with an iconic layout and enhanced sticks. Hear higher-fidelity** sound effects through the built-in speaker in supported games
- Multi-device connectivity - Connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices including Windows PC and Mac computers.
- Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.
Headset jack
PlayStation specifies that the controller’s headset jack requires a wired PC connection. If you need to use a headset through that jack, connect the DualSense by USB rather than relying on Bluetooth.
Steam support labels
Steam’s Full and Partial Controller Support labels help you decide whether a title is worth configuring, but neither label promises that every DualSense feature is present. Confirm advanced feature support in the game’s own documentation or settings.
Troubleshoot the connection in the right order
The PC does not react to a USB connection
- Confirm the Type-C plug is fully seated in the controller and the PC-side plug is in a working port.
- Try another suitable cable or another PC USB port. The cable must carry data, not merely charge; the official setup requirement is a USB connection, so a charge-only cable cannot provide the expected controller data path.
- After Windows recognizes the controller, check the game’s controller settings and Steam support label before changing software.
Bluetooth does not show the controller
- Hold PS until the player indicator turns off.
- Unplug the USB cable.
- Hold Create and PS until the light bar blinks.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in Windows and scan again from Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
If the controller was recently used with another device, turn it fully off before repeating pairing. The pairing sequence is a fresh discovery operation, not a promise of simultaneous multi-device connection.

Windows sees the controller but the game does not
- Open the game’s input or controller menu and select the DualSense.
- For a Steam game, inspect the store page’s Full or Partial Controller Support label.
- Test another compatible title or app. If another title responds, the original game’s support or configuration is the likely boundary.
- Connect by USB if you are testing haptics, adaptive triggers, or the headset jack, because PlayStation identifies USB as required or potentially required for those PC features.
Buttons work but advanced features do not
Check the game’s feature support first. Haptics require USB on PC; adaptive triggers depend on the title and may require USB; microphone and speaker output depend on game support. A working standard input connection can therefore coexist with unavailable advanced effects.
The controller connected before but now will not connect
Use the official reset procedure for the DualSense if it still fails after repeating the USB or Bluetooth instructions. The reset button is a hardware recovery step, not a replacement for checking the game’s support. After resetting, pair again over Bluetooth or reconnect by USB.
Firmware and maintenance
PlayStation provides the PlayStation Accessories PC application for updating DualSense controller software from a computer. Treat this as optional maintenance for a controller that is working, and as a sensible troubleshooting step when behavior remains abnormal after the physical connection and game-support checks. The application is not stated as a requirement for ordinary USB or Bluetooth pairing.
When to consider an update
- The controller repeatedly loses its connection in more than one game.
- Buttons, triggers, or indicators behave inconsistently after a reset and a fresh pairing.
- PlayStation’s current support guidance directs you to update the controller software.
Install updates through the official PlayStation Accessories application, then reconnect the controller and retest the title. Keep the distinction clear: firmware can address controller behavior, but it cannot add DualSense support to a game that does not implement it.
A practical setup sequence for a first session
- Confirm the PC runs Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11.
- Choose USB if you want the shortest setup or need haptics, the controller headset jack, or a feature that may require a wired link.
- Choose Bluetooth if cable-free play matters more and the PC has Bluetooth hardware.
- Connect using the corresponding steps above and wait for the player indicator or Windows pairing confirmation.
- Open the game’s controller settings and test ordinary buttons before testing special effects.
- If the title is in Steam, read its Controller Support label and configure its layout when needed.
- Only after these checks consider a controller software update or reset.
This order prevents a common mistake: treating every failure as a connection failure. USB or Bluetooth establishes the device link; the game decides whether it accepts that input and which DualSense features it can use.
