For most people who want to play PS5 games on another screen, PlayStation Remote Play is the practical choice. It runs the game on your PS5 and streams it to a compatible device. PS5 emulation instead attempts to run games locally on a PC, but as of September 2026 it remains experimental, with limited compatibility and reported bugs, visual glitches, and uneven performance.
The deciding question is whether you want to access a console you own from another screen or experiment with running console software on a PC. Those are different jobs, not two interchangeable ways to get the same result.
How are PS5 emulation and Remote Play different?
| Question | PlayStation Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a PS5 or PS4 console; the game’s video and controls are streamed to another device. | Locally on a PC through an emulator or compatibility project. |
| Do you need a PS5? | Yes, to use Remote Play for PS5 games. Sony also supports Remote Play from PS4 for compatible PS4 games. | Not as the computer running the emulator. Game and firmware requirements vary by project and are not established by the sources cited here. |
| What does it depend on? | A compatible console, game, client device, app, and network connection. | An emulator project that supports the game and a PC capable of running it; compatibility and performance are uncertain. |
| Best suited to | Playing games from your console library on another supported screen. | PC users interested in an evolving technical project and willing to accept that a desired game may not work properly. |
Remote Play moves your console’s output to another screen. Emulation attempts to reproduce console behavior on different hardware. Remote Play is officially supported but subject to Sony’s compatibility and network limits; emulation’s capabilities vary by project and change over time.
What do you need for PlayStation Remote Play?
Sony’s official US Remote Play guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, or a PS4 or PS4 Pro, connected to broadband; a compatible client device; the free PS Remote Play app; and a compatible game. Depending on the device, you may also need a supported wireless controller. Sony requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those thresholds are not a guarantee of any particular image quality or latency, and mobile data use can count against your plan.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

Supported screens and controls
Sony lists iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows PCs, Macs, Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV, and other PlayStation consoles among supported device categories. Exact operating-system and controller compatibility depends on the device. Supported mobile devices can use touch controls; other setups may call for a compatible DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller.
Games and network limits
Not every game supports Remote Play. Sony excludes games requiring PlayStation VR or VR2, titles that need peripherals beyond supported controllers, and games that must be streamed with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Network conditions matter: a longer distance between the console and a remote TV can increase latency.

How does PlayStation Portal fit in?
PlayStation Portal is a dedicated device for playing through Remote Play, not a PS5 emulator. In Remote Play mode it streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5. Sony says the console needs broadband and must be powered on or in Rest Mode. Portal Remote Play has a 5 Mbps minimum and a 15 Mbps recommendation; PlayStation Plus is not required for this mode.
Portal cloud streaming is a separate mode
Sony’s November 5, 2025 announcement describes cloud streaming for selected PS5 games on Portal. It can include eligible digital PS5 games in a user’s library and games from PlayStation Plus catalogs, without connecting Portal to that user’s PS5. This mode requires PlayStation Plus Premium, and its eligible games and requirements may change.

How usable is PS5 emulation in 2026?
As of September 28, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported progress in SharpEmu and KytyPS5 but also described bugs, visual glitches, and performance problems. It characterized the projects as not yet a viable general way to play PS5 games. That is a dated snapshot, not a promise that a particular game or PC will work.
GamesRadar+ attributed a tally of 55 games tested, 12 reaching in-game, and six reported fully playable at 60 FPS to a SharpEmu developer update. These are developer-reported figures for that update, not an independent benchmark or a measure of the PS5 library as a whole. Tom’s Hardware reported on July 15, 2026 that SharpEmu could run some 2D titles well and had booted some 3D titles, while 3D emulation was less mature. Its July 31 follow-up described selected 3D games with visual problems and uneven performance. Those reports concern particular demonstrations and do not establish how a specific PC will run a specific game.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
For someone curious about emulator development, that progress may be worth following. For someone who simply wants reliable access to a PS5 game, the reported compatibility limits and defects make emulation a poor substitute for a console today.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose Remote Play if you own a PS5 and want to play compatible games from its library on a supported phone, tablet, computer, TV device, or Portal. Check device and game compatibility and ensure your connection meets Sony’s guidance.
- Consider emulation only as an experiment if your goal is local PC execution and you are comfortable with an evolving project, uncertain game support, and technical issues.
- Do not treat Portal cloud streaming as either of those options. It is a distinct service mode for selected games, with a PlayStation Plus Premium requirement.
