Then check PSN service status, privacy and online-status settings, blocked players, and any connection or account error shown on screen. PlayStation’s support guidance does not identify one cause or promise a universal fix, so use the steps below to narrow down the issue.
First, identify what is missing
The symptom points to different checks. These are practical troubleshooting distinctions, not an official PlayStation diagnostic tree.
- The whole list is unavailable: check PSN service status and whether the console reports a server or network error.
- Only one or a few friends are missing: review privacy settings and check whether those players are blocked.
- Friends are listed but appear offline: check your friends’ displayed online status and your privacy settings for who can see status and activity.
Check PSN service status
Open PlayStation Network Service Status and check for an outage or maintenance affecting account management or gaming and social features. The page is live, so its current status—not an earlier status report—is the one to use. If a relevant service is unavailable, wait for it to recover before changing console or network settings.
Review privacy settings on PS5
PS5 privacy controls include separate choices for who can see your friends, your online status and current activity, and who can ask to be your friend. These settings are associated with your account and are reflected on other devices.

- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
- Select View and Customise Your Privacy Settings.
- Review the controls for who can see your friends, who can see your online status and current activity, and who can ask to be your friend.
- Adjust a setting if it does not match how you want your profile and social activity to appear.
PlayStation offers privacy profiles as well as custom controls. For a child account, some settings may be managed by the family manager. See PlayStation’s PS5 privacy settings guide for the account controls and their descriptions.
Check online status separately
A friend’s status and whether the friend appears in the list are related but distinct issues. PlayStation says, “You can tell what a player’s online status is by checking the icon on their profile or your friend list.” A player can choose Online, Busy, or Appear Offline, and status may carry across PlayStation consoles where they are signed in.

- From the PS5 home screen, select your profile and open Online Status. You can also reach it through the Control Center by selecting your profile.
- Check whether your own status is set as intended. To see someone else’s status, look at the icon on their profile or in your friends list.
- If a friend is present but appears offline, remember that their status choice and the account’s visibility settings can affect what you see.

If particular friends are missing, check blocked players
If the issue affects specific people rather than the entire list, check your blocked players. Blocking limits profile and activity visibility as well as social interaction. If you unblock someone and want them back on your friends list, send a new friend request; unblocking does not add them again automatically. If PS5 shows a server or connection error
Use the instructions for the exact error code on screen. PlayStation’s guidance for WS-114241-3 and WS-116483-3 overlaps, but their router instructions differ.

Check for an account communication suspension
If social actions fail with an error, an account communication suspension may restrict social features. Check the notification email from PlayStation and My Support for information about a suspension. If you cannot find a notice that explains the problem, contact PlayStation Support.

When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support if the applicable status, privacy, blocked-player, connection, and account checks do not resolve the issue. The available official guidance documents these checks; it does not establish that resetting the console, rebuilding its database, reinstalling software, changing DNS, or forwarding ports will fix a missing friends list.
