Compare the same game and edition at the current digital sale price, new-disc price and pre-owned price: in one July 2026 sample of 19 popular PlayStation games, digital sale prices were lowest for 10, used discs for seven, and two were roughly tied. Your best option depends on the specific game, current offers, and whether your console can play discs.
Which usually costs less: a Store sale or a disc?
There is no reliable across-the-board winner. A digital promotion can beat the price of a new or used disc, while a pre-owned copy may be cheaper than the game’s discounted Store price.

Ars Technica compared 19 current top-selling PlayStation games in July 2026, checking PlayStation Store sale prices, new discs at Amazon, pre-owned listings at GameStop and eBay completed sales. The Store sale was the least expensive option for 10 games, used discs for seven, and two had roughly equivalent cheapest options. The analysis adjusted some comparisons for included downloadable content and PS4-to-PS5 upgrade costs. It is a limited sample, not a full-market survey or a forecast of what will be cheapest for another game. Read Ars Technica’s comparison.
One example from that comparison: a pre-owned GameStop copy of Dark Souls III was reported to cost $10 less than its $30 PlayStation Store sale price. Those are historical figures from the study, not current quotes. The useful takeaway is to check both formats for the title you want.

- Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
- Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
- Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!
How to compare a PS5 game fairly
- Match the edition and content. Compare the same game, platform version and edition. A standard disc may not include the add-ons bundled with a digital deluxe edition; account for any upgrade or DLC cost when the contents differ.
- Check the current Store offer. PlayStation’s US deals page lists live promotions, and its prices and availability can change. Confirm the offer’s end date rather than treating a sale price as permanent.
- Check both new and pre-owned discs. Compare current listings from retailers and local shops, and include delivery or applicable taxes in the total. For marketplace listings, check the item’s condition and whether it is actually a PS5 disc.
- Include resale only as a possibility. A disc may be resold after you finish the game, potentially lowering your net cost. The amount is not guaranteed; it depends on demand, condition and where you sell it.
- Confirm your console supports discs. A digital-only PS5 cannot play a game disc unless it supports a compatible add-on drive. Verify the exact console model and drive compatibility before using a disc price in your comparison.
When PlayStation Store sales make sense
Store promotions are convenient to check and can make a digital copy the lowest-priced option, particularly when the specific game is heavily discounted. Sony says PlayStation Store hosts sales events, special promotions and exclusive discounts on digital games and add-ons. Its US deals page is the place to check current offers; the listed prices can change.
PlayStation also publishes sale events on its deals and events page. The 2026 US calendar included Spring Sale (March 25–April 22), Days of Play (May 27–June 10), and Summer Sale (July 15–August 12). These dates have passed as of October 7, 2026, so they are examples of past sale windows, not active promotions. Sale timing can help you decide whether to wait, but the calendar alone does not establish what price a particular game will reach.

When a physical copy may be the better value
A new disc is not the only physical price to consider: pre-owned copies can undercut both new discs and digital sale prices. Physical copies can also be resold, though any later sale value is uncertain. Check the exact edition and condition, and compare the total cost rather than relying on a single retailer’s headline price.
The other essential factor is hardware. Sony’s PS5 buying and disc-drive information describes a disc-equipped PS5 as playing PS5 and PS4 game collections on Blu-ray Disc, while the PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in drive. Sony lists its separately sold drive for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups and PS5 Pro; it plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD, and needs an internet connection for initial pairing. Check your exact model and the current accessory listing before buying a drive.

What Sony’s 2028 disc change means
In an announcement dated July 1, 2026, Sony said production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony said new releases from then on will be available in digital formats only, through PlayStation Store and retailers. It also said the change does not affect games already released, or due to release before January 2028, in disc format. Compatible existing discs remain playable on compatible hardware; the announcement is about the format of new releases after the cutoff, not a change to the status of existing discs.
