Restart the individual download
Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control center or the relevant system menu. Highlight the game, patch or add-on and select Pause; select it again and choose Resume. This is Sony’s first-line reset for a transfer that appears frozen or is progressing unusually slowly.
Delete and redownload a failed item

Confirm enough free storage
Go to Settings > Storage and check the available space on the destination drive. Games and updates may require more working space than the final installed size, so a nearly full drive can prevent a download from completing even when the network is healthy. Remove or move content only after confirming what you no longer need.
Install current system software
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install an offered update, then retry the download. Keeping the console current ensures that network and download fixes supplied in system software are available before you investigate advanced settings.
Why Ethernet is the most useful speed test
Sony recommends a wired connection where possible. Run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection again after connecting the cable. If downloads become stable on Ethernet, the evidence points to the wireless path or router placement rather than the PS5’s storage. It does not establish a specific Mbps gain, because Sony publishes no universal improvement figure.

Reduce distance and obstructions
Place the PS5 closer to the router and remove objects that block or interfere with the wireless signal. Large furniture, dense walls, enclosed cabinets and nearby electronics can reduce reliability. Keep the console’s ventilation clear while changing its position; a better radio path is not a reason to restrict airflow.
Restart the router or modem properly
Power down the router or modem, wait at least five minutes, then power it back on and allow it to reconnect before testing the PS5. A brief off/on cycle may not clear a stalled network state. Verify the home-network bottleneck before replacing hardware. If a wired test is also slow while the service-status page is normal, a new wireless system is unlikely to solve the underlying issue.
Make Rest Mode downloads work unattended
Rest Mode does not create extra internet bandwidth. It lets the PS5 maintain its connection and perform downloads while you are not actively using the console. Sony’s guidance is: “To download games while in rest mode, set your console to stay connected to the internet.”
Keep the internet connection active
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Power Saving.
- Open Features Available in Rest Mode.

What to do when a download remains stuck
Restart the console and network in a controlled order
When pause/resume, storage checks and a connection test do not help, restart the PS5. Restart the router or modem as described above, wait for its internet connection to return, then start the download again. This sequence clears temporary state without immediately deleting the game.
Use Safe Mode cache tools
For a transfer that repeatedly stalls or system features that behave incorrectly, use the PS5’s Safe Mode and select Clear System Software Cache. Match the fix to the symptom
