PS5 Gets AI Upscaling, but Not the PS5 Pro’s PSSR

Sony’s QSSR brings an AI upscaling option to standard PS5, while PSSR remains the PS5 Pro’s top tier. Here are the first announced games and the limits of Sony’s comparison.

Yes—Sony announced AI upscaling for the standard PS5, but it is a separate, lighter-performance tier called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), not the PS5 Pro’s PSSR brought over unchanged. Sony says PSSR remains the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro; its announcement does not quantify the image-quality difference.

What is coming to the standard PS5?

Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, describing it as a new performance tier of AI upscaling for the standard PS5. The feature grew out of Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on PS5. The company says the earlier PSSR implementation was too computationally demanding to bring to the base console. Sony’s announcement

PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them, according to Sony. QSSR is designed to make a related approach practical on standard PS5 hardware, but the announcement does not say that the PS5 Pro version itself is being ported to the base console.

What is the catch compared with PS5 Pro?

Sony positions PSSR as the higher-end option: it calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro, while saying QSSR brings notable improvements in image detail and stability to standard PS5. Those are Sony’s qualitative claims, not published benchmark results.

The October 1 announcement includes no side-by-side image-quality measurements, resolution figures, frame-time data, or independent test results. That means there is no supported numerical answer for how much sharper or more stable QSSR is, or how it compares with PSSR in a given game. The clear distinction is the console tier: QSSR for standard PS5, PSSR for PS5 Pro.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?

Sony named two first-wave games and said their patches were due “today,” meaning October 1, 2026. The feature is described as an additional graphics option in those games, not a system-wide setting that automatically adds QSSR to every PS5 title.

Game Sony’s announced QSSR support
Marvel’s Wolverine Sony said a patch adding QSSR as an additional graphics option was being released October 1, 2026.
Ghost of Yōtei Sony said a patch adding QSSR as an additional graphics option was being released October 1, 2026.

The stated patch timing does not guarantee that every player in every region had already received or installed either update on that date. Sony said QSSR would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers and expected more games to adopt it, but did not name additional titles or give an adoption schedule. Check each game’s current update notes or in-game graphics settings for availability.

What developers say about QSSR

The developers of the first announced games described benefits they expect in their own titles. These comments were published by Sony and are not independent test findings.

Does QSSR require a new console or accessory?

Sony describes QSSR as an additional graphics option in supported PS5 games. Its announcement does not establish a need to buy a PS5 Pro, a new accessory, or a particular display to use QSSR on a standard PS5. The feature is tied to game support, so an eligible title and its supporting update are the relevant requirements.
