Sony has announced a free AI-upscaling feature for PS5, but it has not announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will use it. The new feature, Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), is being added through patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei; Sony’s GTA VI announcement does not mention QSSR.
What PS5’s new graphics upgrade does
QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling technology for the original PS5. Upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render, aiming to make the final picture look more detailed than that underlying render. Sony says QSSR is designed to improve image detail and stability, using a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned for PS5 performance. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling developed through Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD.

QSSR is an option developers can add to supported games, not a system-wide switch that automatically changes every PS5 game. Sony says it will make the technology broadly available to PlayStation developers, but each game needs developer support and a patch. The announcement provides no general performance guarantee, target resolution, frame-rate figure, or measured image-quality result.

Which games have QSSR support so far?
Sony named two initial games. Both were being patched on October 1, 2026 to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option:

Those are developer descriptions of their own games, not independent measurements or promises about every supported title. Sony’s announcement does not list specific resolution or frame-rate modes for either game.
Will GTA 6 use QSSR?
There is no confirmed GTA VI QSSR support in Sony’s cited announcements. Sony’s June 24, 2026 PlayStation Blog post says the game is planned for PS5 on November 19, 2026, and highlights DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. It does not mention QSSR.

That omission does not establish that GTA VI will never support the feature. Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to developers, but has so far named only its initial games. Whether Rockstar will add QSSR, and whether any support would arrive at launch or in a later patch, remains unannounced.

Sony presents QSSR as software delivered in patches for supported PS5 games; its announcement does not say owners must buy a new console or pay separately for the feature. It does not identify PS5 Pro as a requirement. You will only see QSSR in games whose developers implement it, and the named games offer it as an additional graphics option rather than an automatic change to all PS5 software.

QSSR and PS5 Pro’s PSSR are different
The similar names refer to different platform contexts. QSSR is announced for PS5, while PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement and its March 16, 2026 PSSR update describe the Pro feature separately. The PSSR update applies to supported PS5 Pro games, with results varying by title; that support list should not be treated as a QSSR list.
For GTA VI, the practical answer is unchanged: Sony has confirmed a planned PS5 release and separately announced QSSR for supported games, but it has not connected the two. A GTA VI graphics upgrade through QSSR should not be assumed unless the developer or Sony confirms it.
