Reports published September 29–30, 2026 say a public PS5 jailbreak called Relapse can run unsigned code on consoles using firmware 7.00 through 13.60. That can make game backups—including unauthorized copies—technically runnable, but it does not provide games, work on every PS5, or amount to a permanent system unlock. Firmware 14.00 is outside the reported range.
What the PS5 jailbreak report actually means
“Jailbreak” is shorthand for a chain of vulnerabilities that reportedly lets Relapse run code Sony has not authorized. Ars Technica describes a browser vulnerability followed by kernel access and an ELF loader for arbitrary code. That is a meaningful security breakthrough, but it is not custom firmware and should not be confused with a hypervisor exploit. Ars Technica’s September 30 report and PSN.GG’s September 29 coverage distinguish the exploit from a full, lasting replacement for Sony’s system software.
The word “finally” is relative: PS5 security research and earlier exploits existed before this release. The new development, according to Ars, is a more useful reported firmware range—not the first time anyone found a way to exploit the console.
Which PS5 firmware versions are reportedly compatible?
As of reports dated September 29–30, 2026, the reported compatibility range is firmware 7.00 through 13.60. Ars Technica describes support up to 13.6; Tom’s Hardware gives the range as 7.00–13.60 and reports compatibility including PS5 Pro. Firmware 14.00, released in mid-September, is outside that reported range. These are news reports, not an official Sony compatibility statement, and the details may change. That cutoff creates a trade-off rather than a simple “jailbroken or not” choice. Newer system software falls outside the stated range, while staying on older firmware can limit access to game updates. Tom’s Hardware cites a specific example in which a disc edition’s update requirement differed from the digital version; that is an attributed example, not evidence that disc and digital releases always behave differently.
Does Relapse let people play pirated games?
Reports say the exploit can run game backups, so unauthorized copies are technically possible on a compatible console. That is a capability implication, not proof of widespread piracy or a guarantee that every game will run. A jailbreak does not supply game files. A legally owned personal backup and an unauthorized copy are also different things; the exploit’s technical capability does not make downloading or using a pirated copy lawful.

Homebrew and other unsigned code are separate uses of the ability to run code outside Sony’s authorization. Neither the existence of those uses nor reports of piracy establish how many people are using Relapse or what proportion of games work.
Is the jailbreak permanent or safe to use online?
PSN.GG describes Relapse as tethered, meaning access reportedly does not persist through a restart, and characterizes it as fast but unreliable. That outlet also reports possible system failure, data loss, and account or hardware bans. Treat these as reported risks, not guaranteed outcomes or official Sony guidance. A specific account or console ban is not promised by the Sony agreement cited below.

There is a practical conflict between experimenting with a modified system and relying on normal access to PSN, system updates, and current games. The cited reports do not establish a safe way to avoid service consequences, so they should not be read as a recommendation to connect a modified console to PSN.

Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits using tools to bypass, disable, or circumvent system encryption, security, or authentication, and prohibits causing system software to accept unauthorized or pirated software. It also says updates may include measures that prevent unauthorized or pirated content. These are the published terms for the US agreement, not a statement of legal outcomes in every country. What is—and is not—established
- Reported: Relapse was publicly released in late September 2026, with a reported firmware range of 7.00–13.60.
- Reported capability: It can run unsigned code and game backups, which makes unauthorized copies technically possible on compatible systems.
- Not established: That every PS5 or every game is compatible, that the exploit survives a reboot, that it works on firmware 14.00, or that piracy is widespread.
- Not a guarantee: Account or hardware bans and data loss are reported risks, not certain consequences for every user.
