Sony reported more than 95 million PS5 units sold-in worldwide by June 30, 2026; Microsoft’s current Series X|S hardware total is not directly established in the cited sources. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s published Series X GPU figure—12 TFLOPS—is higher than the PS5’s listed 10.28 TFLOPS. The apparent gap depends on what “outperforming” means: market reach, hardware specifications, or how a particular game runs.
What does “outperforming” mean?
There are three different comparisons: how many consoles are in use or have been sold, what the hardware specifications say, and how individual games perform. Those measures do not produce the same winner.
- Adoption: Sony has published dated PS5 sales figures; the available sources do not provide a directly comparable current Xbox Series X|S hardware total.
- Published GPU throughput: Xbox Series X has the higher listed teraflops figure.
- Game performance: Results vary by title, optimization, resolution, frame-rate target and software updates.
Is the PS5 selling more than Xbox Series X?
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported that PS5 had sold-in more than 95 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. “Sold-in” is Sony’s reported shipment measure; it is not the same as a verified count of consoles purchased by end users. Sony also reported 125 million monthly active users for PlayStation on that date, a platform-wide figure rather than a PS5-only count. Sony’s corporate data therefore establishes substantial PlayStation reach, but it does not give a like-for-like current sales comparison with Xbox Series X|S.
Do not treat third-party estimates as an official Microsoft sales total. TechRadar’s November 5, 2025 comparison noted the absence of a recent official Microsoft unit figure and discussed estimates; those are not equivalent to company-reported numbers. A precise current sales ratio cannot be established from the cited figures.

Does the Xbox Series X have more powerful hardware?
On the published GPU throughput figure, yes: Microsoft lists Xbox Series X at 12 TFLOPS, with 52 compute units running at 1.825 GHz. TechRadar’s November 5, 2025 comparison lists PS5 at 10.28 TFLOPS, with 36 compute units and a higher GPU clock. These are specification figures, not a reliable universal ranking of game performance. Microsoft’s Series X specifications and TechRadar’s comparison describe different parts of the picture.
A teraflops number alone cannot predict how a finished game will run. The console, game engine, graphics settings, resolution, frame-rate target and patches all affect the result. For a purchase decision, compare performance in the specific games you intend to play rather than assuming the higher published number guarantees a better experience in every title.

Why can some games perform as well or better on PS5?
TechRadar’s account of Digital Foundry developer interviews points to several possible contributors to PS5 results in some scenarios: a more efficient GPU compiler, lower-level APIs and higher clock speeds. These are reported developer explanations, not proof that PS5 is faster across the board or that one factor explains every game. Different engines and development choices can lead to different results, even between consoles with similar capabilities.
That variability is why comparisons should be specific. A game may prioritize image resolution on one console and a steadier frame rate on another, or receive updates that change its performance. Check recent analysis for the exact title and mode you care about; the figures above do not establish a blanket winner for all games.

Why does PlayStation have such a large audience?
The published figures show scale, not a single proven cause. Sony reported more than 1.706 billion software units sold across PS4 and PS5 as of June 30, 2026, while its 125 million monthly active users figure covers PlayStation as a whole. The company also reported more than 51 billion hours of annual gameplay as of March 31, 2025. These are ecosystem-wide indicators, not PS5-only measures. Sony’s corporate data gives the relevant reporting dates and definitions.
A larger installed base can plausibly encourage publishers to support a platform and give users more incentive to stay invested in its library. Sony’s May 2025 corporate strategy presentation describes expectations that network-business revenue and profit will grow alongside monthly active users and an expanding installed base. That describes a business expectation and a plausible feedback loop; it does not establish that one factor, such as exclusives, marketing, price or supply, caused the PS5’s lead.

| Consideration | What to check |
|---|---|
| Games | Look up the current availability of the specific titles you want on each platform. Subscription catalogs and game availability change, so a general library claim can quickly become outdated. |
| Price | Sony’s US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 were $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Compare with Xbox pricing in your country on the same date, and check retailer prices before buying. Sony’s price update covers the stated market and effective date. |
| Physical games | If you buy or borrow disc games, confirm that the console version you choose includes a disc drive. A digital-only model will not play physical discs. |
| Performance | Compare recent results for the games and graphics modes you care about. Published GPU figures cannot settle a game-by-game comparison. |
| Controllers and ecosystem | Try the controller and interface if possible, and account for your existing digital library, friends and subscriptions. These preferences are personal and can outweigh small differences in specifications. |
| Storage and display | Check how each console supports storage expansion and whether your TV or monitor can use the resolution and refresh-rate features you want. Confirm the exact model’s compatibility before buying accessories. |
