Yes, jailbreaking a PS5 can put both the console and your PlayStation account at risk. Can you get banned for jailbreaking a PS5?
There is no published Sony percentage for PS5 jailbreak detection, no official probability of a ban, and no promise that every modified console will be suspended. The reliable answer is narrower: an unauthorized modification can breach Sony’s agreements, and those agreements give Sony several ways to restrict a console, an account, or both.
The US PS5 System Software License Agreement treats the system software as licensed software rather than something users may freely alter. Its section 2 says, “You may not lease, rent, sublicense, publish, modify, patch, adapt or translate System Software.” The same section prohibits unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware and software, as well as bypassing PS5 encryption, security, or authentication. A jailbreak falls within the kind of conduct those clauses are designed to prohibit.

Sony’s US PlayStation Terms of Service separately allow restrictions, suspension, or termination involving an account and/or a PlayStation device. That wording matters: a device action is not identical to an account action, and the documents do not say that every jailbreak automatically bans every account connected to the console.
What Sony says it can do to a modified console
The software agreement does not describe one mandatory “jailbreak ban” workflow. Instead, section 6 says, “SIE Inc may itself or may procure the taking of any action to protect its interests.” The examples that follow create a broad set of possible remedies:

These are reserved remedies, not a published checklist that Sony applies in the same order to every case. Sony does not disclose a jailbreak-specific detection rate or a guaranteed enforcement timetable, so claims such as “you will be banned immediately” go beyond the available policy language.

Account ban versus PS5 console suspension
An account restriction follows the PlayStation account. A device suspension follows the hardware and can affect every account that tries to use that console. Sony’s US terms therefore distinguish two different exposure paths rather than treating them as one universal ban.

The device rule is unusually consequential. Sony’s section 12.5 says, “Upon suspension of your PlayStation Device, you will not be able to use that console to (a) access our Services with any Account (even if you create a new one).” The same provision covers online-required games and modes and purchased PlayStation Store content. A disc game that runs entirely offline may still function, but that depends on the game’s own requirements and does not restore Store access or online play.
Will jailbreaking my PS5 delete my saves?
Account or console suspension and local save deletion are separate issues. The terms establish service restrictions; they do not say that a suspension automatically wipes the internal SSD. Data can nevertheless disappear during the actions commonly associated with troubleshooting a modified system: resetting, restoring, reformatting, replacing storage, or sending the console for repair.

Default settings are not the same as a full reset
Sony’s PS5 reset guide distinguishes restoring default settings from resetting the PS5. Restoring default settings changes settings without affecting user or game data. Resetting the PS5 deletes user data, game data, and personalized settings. Sony’s support warning is explicit: “This process cannot be undone, and deleted data cannot be restored.” Choose the less destructive option only when it addresses the actual problem; do not assume that a reset is a reversible diagnostic step.

Repair and storage work can create additional loss
An authorized repair or a storage-related procedure may require initialization or replacement. Even when a technician is acting legitimately, the current data may not survive. Sign out where Sony’s repair instructions require it, record the account credentials you will need afterward, and complete a supported backup before handing over the console. No backup method guarantees recovery of every item, especially if the PS5 can no longer start, sync, or authenticate.
USB backup versus PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Sony documents two practical preparation methods: a full USB system backup and cloud synchronization through PlayStation Plus. They solve different problems and neither prevents enforcement or restores online services after a suspension.

Do not confuse a full system backup with copying one individual save. Sony’s PS5 data-transfer page says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive through the individual-save transfer method. The supported full-backup workflow is the relevant USB option when you need a broader snapshot.
What to do before a reset, repair, or troubleshooting session
- Check synchronization first. Confirm that the saves you care about have recently synchronized to PlayStation Plus, if you use that service. A cloud entry that predates your latest play session will not contain newer progress.
- Create a full USB backup when the console is still accessible. Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted compatible drive and Sony’s current backup procedure. Keep the drive safely separated from the console.
- Inventory exceptions. Note games or applications on extended USB or M.2 storage, because Sony says those are not included in the system backup. Reinstalling them later may require the original account and licenses.
- Read the exact reset option. “Restore default settings” and “Reset your PS5” have different data consequences. Do not select the full reset unless you accept irreversible deletion.
- Follow authorized repair instructions. Sign out, remove accessories or storage only as directed, and avoid sending personal information or a backup drive with the console unless the provider specifically requires it.
- Plan for partial recovery. Screenshots, settings, locally stored saves, and licenses may follow different recovery paths. Treat the backup as risk reduction, not a guarantee.
Can a jailbreak void the PS5 warranty?
Warranty language is regional, so the US/Canada wording should not be applied worldwide. On Sony’s US PS5 warranty page, one exclusion covers a product that is “MODIFIED TO ALTER CAPABILITY OR FUNCTIONALITY WITHOUT SIE’S WRITTEN PERMISSION.” The same page says Sony may void the warranty if it reasonably believes the console was used in a way that violates the separate software license.

That language can affect a repair request even if the immediate hardware fault appears unrelated to the modification. Local consumer-protection law may provide rights that a commercial warranty exclusion cannot remove, and other regions publish different terms. Check the warranty page for the country where the console was purchased rather than relying on the US wording.

What can still work after a device suspension?
Sony’s terms specifically identify the services and content that become unavailable: access to PlayStation services with any account, online-required games or modes, and content purchased from PlayStation Store. They do not state that every disc-based game is disabled. A disc title that has all required data locally and does not require an online check may continue to launch, but patches, cloud saves, trophies synchronization, multiplayer, and Store downloads can still depend on services that are no longer reachable.
Do not treat any remaining offline function as evidence that the console is safe to modify. It is simply a narrower description of what a device suspension does and does not expressly cover.
How certain is the risk?
The policy documents establish prohibited conduct and possible remedies, not an enforcement statistic. Sony has not published a jailbreak-specific detection rate, ban probability, or save-loss frequency in the cited material. That means nobody can responsibly convert the rules into a percentage such as “a one-in-five chance of a ban.” The outcome can depend on account activity, network use, the nature of the modification, later system updates, and Sony’s enforcement decisions, none of which are quantified in these documents.

The defensible risk statement is therefore conditional: modifying the PS5 can violate the license; Sony can restrict the account, the device, services, software, or warranty; and data can be lost through a reset or repair. A person who proceeds is accepting several independent failure modes rather than betting on one predictable penalty.
The Bottom Line
A PS5 jailbreak is not a harmless software tweak. Under Sony’s US agreements, it can expose the console to software or service disablement, the device and account to suspension, and the hardware to warranty or repair refusal. Saved data is not automatically deleted by a ban, but a reset, restore, or repair can erase it permanently. If preserving access and progress matters, keep the system unmodified and maintain Sony-supported cloud or full-system backups before any troubleshooting.
