PS5 Monitor Upgrade: When 120Hz, VRR and 1440p Actually Matter

Yes, a good monitor can make a noticeable difference on PS5—but only when it adds a mode your current screen cannot use. The most meaningful upgrades are 1440p output, 120 Hz in games that support a 120-fps mode, and HDMI 2.1 VRR for smoother frame delivery. A monitor’s advertised refresh rate does not force a PS5 game to render faster, and no display automatically improves every title. The console, monitor, HDMI connection, and game must support the same feature.

What a monitor can change on PS5

A monitor is an output device, not a performance upgrade. The PS5 still determines a game’s resolution and frame-rate modes. The display can, however, let you see capabilities that an older television or office monitor cannot accept.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Resolution: A compatible display can accept the console’s 1440p output or 4K output. More pixels can make fine text, distant objects and interface elements clearer, especially at a short desk distance.
  • Refresh rate: A 120 Hz-capable screen can show supported PS5 games in their 120 Hz mode. It does not turn a 30-fps or 60-fps game into a 120-fps game.
  • Variable refresh rate: HDMI 2.1 VRR can synchronize the display’s refresh timing with compatible PS5 output, reducing judder and tearing when frame delivery fluctuates.
  • Image features: HDR, contrast, brightness and panel response affect the picture separately from resolution and refresh rate. A high-refresh panel with weak HDR may look less impressive in dark or bright scenes than a slower panel with better image quality.

That is why “good” means compatible with your games, console settings and viewing position, rather than simply expensive or rated for the highest number on its box.

When the difference is easiest to see

Moving from a 60 Hz-only screen to 120 Hz

Some PS5 games offer a dedicated 120 Hz mode, usually by reducing resolution, visual effects or other quality settings to maintain a higher frame rate. With a 120 Hz monitor and the correct console and in-game options, camera movement and aiming can feel more immediate. The benefit is most apparent in fast action, racing and competitive shooters. It is not present in games that offer only 30 or 60 fps.

PS5’s practical high-refresh target is 120 Hz. Sony specifies up to 120 Hz from PS5 on its own gaming monitor; the same product’s 240 Hz figure applies to compatible PC and Mac devices. A 240 Hz monitor therefore does not promise 240 frames per second from a PS5.

Moving from 1080p to 1440p or 4K

PS5 supports 1440p output on compatible computer monitors. At a desk, where your eyes are closer to the screen, the extra detail over 1080p can be worthwhile. A 4K display provides a higher pixel count still, but the console’s game mode determines whether a title actually renders at 4K. Some games use dynamic resolution or offer a choice between a quality mode and a performance mode.

Resolution is not an automatic quality ranking. A well-tuned 1440p monitor can look cleaner and respond faster than a poorly configured 4K model. Match the resolution to your desk distance, preferred screen size and the games you play.

Adding HDMI 2.1 VRR

VRR allows a compatible display to vary its refresh timing instead of refreshing at a fixed interval. When a game’s frame rate moves between, for example, 55 and 60 frames per second, VRR can make those changes appear smoother than fixed-refresh output. Sony describes PS5 VRR operation with HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible displays and notes that results vary by screen and game.

VRR is conditional. The game must produce output that can benefit from it, the monitor must support VRR through the HDMI input used by the console, and VRR must be enabled in PS5 settings. A monitor that advertises Adaptive-Sync only over DisplayPort may not provide the feature to a PS5 connected by HDMI.

PS5 monitor features compared

Feature What PS5 can use What to verify on the monitor When it matters most
1080p Supported output Any HDMI input that accepts PS5 timing Existing 1080p owners who value low cost or a small screen
1440p (QHD) Supported on compatible displays, with a console compatibility test Native 2560 × 1440 support over HDMI; 60 and 120 Hz modes if desired Desk gaming where sharper detail than 1080p is useful without requiring 4K
4K Supported output; game rendering mode varies by title 4K input support and the desired refresh mode Players prioritizing detail, large screens or a television-like presentation
120 Hz Up to 120 Hz in supported games and output modes 120 Hz over the monitor’s HDMI port, not only DisplayPort Fast games with a 120 Hz option
240 Hz Not a 240-fps PS5 mode Useful mainly for a PC connected to the same monitor Mixed PC-and-PS5 setups, not extra PS5 frame rate
HDMI 2.1 VRR VRR with compatible displays and games Explicit HDMI VRR support and the monitor’s supported range Reducing judder or tearing when frame delivery fluctuates
HDR Available when the display and game support it Supported HDR format, brightness and picture settings Highlight detail, color and contrast in HDR-enabled games

Manufacturers use different terms for refresh, VRR and HDR. Read the input specifications for the exact HDMI port rather than relying on a product title or a DisplayPort-only specification.

Check what your current setup already supports

Before buying anything, inspect the PS5’s negotiated signal. On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The Video Output Information screen shows the connected HDMI device’s resolution, VRR and HDR information. This tells you whether the limitation is the monitor, the cable, a setting or the game itself.

If you are considering a 1440p screen, select Test 1440p Output where that option appears. The test checks supported SDR and HDR modes at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, along with VRR. A failed or limited result means the monitor, HDMI path or current configuration needs attention before you can count on that mode.

How to choose a monitor for your PS5 use

Choose your target resolution first

Pick 1440p if you sit close to the desk, want a sharper image than 1080p and do not need every game presented at 4K. Pick 4K if maximum detail is the priority and you are willing to verify that the monitor accepts the required 4K timings. A larger screen viewed from farther away can make 4K more useful than it would be on a compact desk.

Then choose the refresh-rate requirement

For a PS5-only setup, 120 Hz is the practical ceiling to shop for. Higher ratings can be sensible when the same monitor will also serve a gaming PC, but they should not be treated as a PS5 upgrade by themselves. Check that 120 Hz is available through HDMI at your chosen resolution; some monitors reserve their fastest mode for DisplayPort.

Confirm VRR over HDMI

Look for explicit HDMI VRR support and identify which HDMI socket provides it. Read the supported resolution-and-refresh combinations, because a monitor may support VRR at one mode but not another. Leave room for firmware updates if the manufacturer lists them as part of compatibility troubleshooting.

Treat HDR as a separate decision

HDR labeling alone does not describe brightness or contrast quality. Confirm the monitor’s supported HDR mode and decide whether HDR performance matters to your library. The official specifications for Sony’s PS5-oriented monitor list HDR, but they do not constitute comparative image-quality testing against other models.

A concrete PS5-oriented monitor example

PlayStation lists a 27-inch Gaming Monitor with DualSense Charging Hook. Its stated specifications include a 2560 × 1440 IPS panel, HDR, HDMI 2.1 inputs, VRR and up to 120 Hz when connected to PS5. The listed maximum rises to 240 Hz for compatible PC and Mac devices. Those numbers describe input and display capability; they do not increase the console’s rendering performance.

The charging hook is a convenience feature, not a graphics feature. Availability and stock notices can change, so check the current PlayStation Direct listing before treating this model as obtainable. It is an example of the specification combination to look for, not proof that it is the best or fastest choice for every buyer.

Set up a new monitor for the intended mode

  1. Connect the console directly. Plug the PS5 into the monitor’s HDMI input instead of passing it through an unverified switch, receiver or capture device while testing.
  2. Use the supplied cable first. Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with PS5 for high-performance features. A separate cable is not automatically necessary for a typical setup.
  3. Verify the HDMI port. Use the socket documented for 4K, 120 Hz or VRR; ports on the same monitor can have different capabilities.
  4. Check Video Output Information. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, confirm the detected resolution, HDR and VRR information.
  5. Run the 1440p test if relevant. Open Test 1440p Output and review the reported 60 Hz, 120 Hz, SDR, HDR and VRR results.
  6. Enable 120 Hz Output. Turn it on for games that provide a 120 Hz mode, then select the game’s performance or 120 Hz option if required.
  7. Enable VRR. Turn on the PS5 VRR setting only after confirming that the monitor supports VRR through the connected HDMI input.
  8. Set the monitor’s picture mode. Select the documented HDR mode when using HDR games, and disable processing features that add latency if the monitor offers a low-latency or game mode.

Troubleshoot a missing 4K, 120 Hz or VRR signal

The console stays at 60 Hz

  • Confirm that the game actually supports a 120 Hz mode; many titles do not.
  • Check that 120 Hz is enabled in PS5 Video Output settings and in the game’s own graphics menu.
  • Verify that the monitor supports 120 Hz over HDMI at the selected resolution, not only over DisplayPort.
  • Connect directly to the display, try the documented high-bandwidth HDMI port and restart the console after changing the connection.

4K 120 Hz does not appear

  • Check the monitor’s manual for 4K 120 Hz support on the exact HDMI input.
  • Install available display firmware and PS5 system updates.
  • Use the PS5-included HDMI cable or another appropriately rated cable.
  • Remove switches, receivers and capture hardware temporarily to isolate the signal path.
  • Try another HDMI port if the display has more than one, because capability can differ by port.

VRR is unavailable or unstable

  • Confirm HDMI VRR support rather than DisplayPort-only Adaptive-Sync.
  • Check that VRR is enabled on both the monitor and PS5.
  • Use a game with a compatible frame-rate mode; VRR cannot smooth output that the game never produces.
  • Update the monitor firmware and retest with a direct connection.

The picture looks wrong in HDR

Recheck the monitor’s HDR mode, the PS5 HDR setting and the game’s calibration screen. HDR is independent of refresh rate, so a successful 120 Hz connection does not guarantee a correctly configured HDR picture.

Who should upgrade—and who should keep the current screen

An upgrade is likely worthwhile when

  • Your current display is limited to 1080p and you want sharper desk-distance detail.
  • You play titles with a 120 Hz mode but your present screen accepts only 60 Hz.
  • Your current monitor lacks HDMI VRR and you notice judder or tearing in compatible games.
  • You need HDMI 2.1 support for a 4K 120 Hz setup and your existing display cannot accept that signal.
  • You are replacing a small or poorly positioned screen and the new size and ergonomics solve a practical problem.

Keeping the current monitor may be the better choice when

  • You mostly play 30-fps or 60-fps games and are satisfied with the current resolution.
  • Your monitor already accepts the resolution, 120 Hz mode and VRR that your games use.
  • You are considering a 240 Hz rating solely for PS5; the console will not output 240 fps.
  • The proposed replacement would require a desk-distance or size compromise that you do not want.
  • You expect a monitor alone to improve graphics quality in games whose rendering mode is unchanged.

Bottom line for PS5 owners

A good monitor makes a difference when it removes a real limitation: 1440p instead of 1080p, 120 Hz for a supported high-frame-rate mode, or HDMI 2.1 VRR for smoother variable output. Check the PS5’s Video Output Information and 1440p test, confirm HDMI capabilities on the exact port, and match the purchase to the games you actually play. If your current screen already delivers those modes, a more expensive monitor may change little.
