PS5 or Xbox Series X: Which Console Is Better for Couch Multiplayer?

The better console for couch multiplayer depends on the exact games, local modes, player counts, existing library, and controllers your household needs.

Neither PS5 nor Xbox Series X is automatically better for couch multiplayer. Choose based on the exact games your household wants to play, the local modes and player counts those games support, and any compatible games and controllers you already own. A platform’s catalog listings are useful for discovery, but they do not provide a standardized comparison of couch-multiplayer catalog size or quality.

Start with the games your group wants to play

Make a shortlist of specific titles before choosing a console. Genre can help narrow it down—fighting games, racing games, party games, or co-op adventures—but the decisive question is whether each exact game edition supports the way your group wants to play in the same room.

For example, PlayStation’s local multiplayer guide lists Tekken 8 for two-player local competitive play, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for two to four players in local competitive and co-op play, and F1 25 for two-player local co-op. These are examples, not a full catalog comparison; check the current store listing for the edition you plan to buy: PlayStation local multiplayer games.

Xbox’s local co-op catalog includes titles such as Minecraft, Rocket League, Borderlands 4, Gang Beasts, A Way Out, and Gears of War: Reloaded. PlayStation’s couch co-op collection includes Split Fiction, Diablo IV, Baldur’s Gate 3, and It Takes Two. Treat both collections as places to discover candidates, not as guarantees about current availability or a particular local mode. Check each title’s current listing before deciding: Xbox local co-op games and PlayStation couch co-op games.

Check what “local multiplayer” means in each game

Local multiplayer can mean different things: players cooperating on one screen, sharing a screen while competing, or using split-screen views. A game may support one local mode but not another, and the number of local players can vary by title or edition. Confirm the mode and local player count for the specific version you intend to buy rather than inferring them from a franchise or platform.

Also separate same-room play from online multiplayer. A game’s online features or subscription requirements do not, by themselves, establish what is required for its offline local modes. Check the chosen game’s current requirements and the platform’s service terms if your group also plans to play online.

Factor in games you already own

PS5 and PS4 games

PlayStation says more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ games available on PS4 are playable on PS5. That is PlayStation’s compatibility claim, not a count of couch-multiplayer games or a directly comparable statistic for Xbox. Compatibility also does not prove that a particular game’s local mode works as you expect, so verify the specific title. PlayStation’s PS5 backward compatibility information.

Xbox Series X and older Xbox games

Xbox Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Xbox says offline co-op, multiple-controller party scenarios, and system-link are supported for original Xbox games only when the original game supported them; specific features vary by game. Check the compatibility and local-play details for each title rather than assuming support from the console’s backward compatibility alone. Xbox backward compatibility.

Count controllers and check the cost of access

For local play, you need enough controllers for the game’s supported player count. PlayStation’s local multiplayer guidance recommends an extra DualSense wireless controller, but the number needed depends on the title and how many people will play. Check whether you already have compatible controllers and whether the game supports that many local players before buying accessories.

Check whether each shortlisted game must be purchased or is currently included with a subscription. Store availability, subscription catalogs, and terms can change, so verify them at the time you choose. Do not assume that a subscription required for online console multiplayer is also required for offline couch play; the game and mode determine the relevant requirements.
