A steam mop that leaves streaks usually needs a clean, dry pad or the floor has cleaner, grease, polish, or wax residue. A floor left wet or puddled may have a saturated pad, excess steam for that model, or a tank or seal problem. Unplug the mop before changing pads or inspecting parts, and check that your flooring and mop are compatible before steaming again.
First, tell streaks from excess water
Cloudy marks, spots, or streaks often point to a dirty pad or residue on the floor. Drips, puddles, or a floor that remains unusually wet call for checking pad saturation, how the mop is being used, and—if the problem persists—the tank and related parts. The two symptoms can overlap: a saturated or dirty pad may leave both marks and excess moisture.
Fix streaks, cloudy marks, or spots
Start with the pad and floor preparation
Unplug the mop, then check that the pad is attached correctly, clean, and not saturated. Replace it with a clean, dry pad that fits your exact model if needed. Follow the pad’s washing instructions: Shark warns that detergent powder left in a laundered pad can contribute to marks on some models. Sweep or vacuum before steaming so grit and debris do not get dragged across the floor.
Keep the mop moving
Move the mop continuously and use its trigger or steam setting as its manual directs. Holding some models in one place can mark a surface, particularly a waxed floor. Do not apply a timing rule from one model to another; for example, BISSELL’s guidance for the SteamReady model 1464 says not to hold the trigger continuously for more than 20 seconds and to keep the mop moving. That limit is specific to that model.

Consider what is already on the floor
Old cleaner, soap, grease, floor polish, or wax may be spread or brought to the surface by steam. Shark says grease may need cleaning before steaming and that residue from previous cleaner can take additional passes to lift. BISSELL also notes that steam can affect polish or wax. Do not assume a steam mop will rinse away buildup: use only a cleaning method approved by the flooring manufacturer.
If streaks persist on a waxed or polished surface, stop and check the flooring maker’s care instructions before trying another treatment. BISSELL suggests wiping some polish- or wax-related streaks with a damp towel, but that is not suitable advice for every floor or finish.

Check the water guidance for your model
Water requirements are model-specific. Shark suggests distilled water for spots on some of its models, while BISSELL’s streaking advice says to use only water. Tefal warns against putting chemical descaling products or additives in the tank. Follow the exact mop manual; do not treat distilled water or any other tank instruction as universal.
Fix drips, puddles, or a floor that stays too wet
Replace a saturated pad and review the setting
A pad that has absorbed too much water can leave the floor wet. With the mop unplugged, replace it with a clean, dry compatible pad. Tefal’s guidance for the VP6557RH also suggests cleaning the wipe or selecting Eco steam; those steps apply to that model’s instructions, not necessarily to other mops.

Check how you are operating the mop
Keep the mop moving and use steam as directed in its manual. Some manufacturer instructions warn against leaving a mop standing on a wet pad, or using it horizontally or upside down, because those conditions can cause leakage. Follow the warnings for your model.
Inspect the tank only as the manual directs
If the floor still gets wet with a clean, dry pad, unplug the mop and check that the tank is seated correctly. Where the manual permits, inspect the tank, cap, valve, and gasket for visible damage. A cracked tank or damaged cap or seal may require a model-specific replacement part or service; do not assume parts from another model will fit. Use the manufacturer’s support or parts channel for a confirmed fault.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Stop the mop and unplug it before changing its pad or inspecting the unit.
- Check that the pad is correctly attached, clean, and not saturated. Fit a clean, dry pad made for the exact mop model if necessary.
- Sweep or vacuum the floor, then retry while moving the mop continuously and using the instructed steam setting.
- If streaks remain, consider cleaner, soap, grease, polish, or wax residue. Treat it only by a method approved for that flooring, and verify that the material and finish permit steam.
- If water still drips or pools, follow the mop’s instructions to check tank seating and visible damage. Contact the manufacturer or use a compatible replacement part if a component fault is confirmed.
Check floor compatibility before steaming
Steam is not established as safe for every flooring material or finish. Check the flooring manufacturer’s use and care instructions as well as the appliance manual before using steam, especially on waxed or polished surfaces. If either manufacturer advises against steam or a proposed cleaning treatment, do not proceed with it.
