Sony is not imposing a universal, immediate PS5 shutdown. However, Sony’s current UK PlayStation Network terms say an account unused for at least 36 months may be closed after an email warning and a six-month opportunity to sign in or contact support. Closure removes access to PSN and purchases made with that account, and the UK terms call it irreversible. The United States terms reviewed in April 2026 use different wording and do not publish the same 36-month process.
What Sony’s latest terms actually say
The widely shared warning about PS5 owners losing PSN access compresses several different Sony policies into one headline. The relevant rule depends on the account’s region, and inactivity closure is not the same as a suspension for breaking PlayStation rules.

United Kingdom: a 36-month inactivity process
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current UK PSN Terms of Service state: “If you have not used your account for at least 36 months we may take steps to close it.” The wording says Sony may take steps; it does not describe an automatic deletion of every account as soon as the 36-month point is reached.

Under the same terms, Sony says it will contact the email address registered to the account and give the user six months to log in or contact Sony to ask that the account remain open. If Sony closes the account, the terms say: “After your account is closed, you will not be able to access the PSN or use the Products purchased with that account. Account closure is irreversible.”

United States: no matching 36-month deadline on the reviewed page
The US PlayStation Terms of Service revised in April 2026 do not publish that same 36-month warning-and-grace-period process on the reviewed page. They say Sony may delete player-account data it determines to be dormant, and may restrict, suspend or terminate accounts or devices to enforce the rules or protect the platform.
The US terms also warn that Sony may discontinue particular content or features. For content that relies on online servers, Sony makes no commitment to keep those servers available. That is a separate availability limitation, not evidence of a single worldwide 36-month PSN deletion deadline.

How to keep a PSN account active on a PS5
Sony’s own PS5 instructions require an account and an internet connection. To sign in from the console:

Keep the registered email address accessible and monitor it for Sony notices. For a UK account, that address is the stated warning channel if Sony is considering inactivity closure. If an inactivity notice arrives, follow the message’s instructions within its six-month window: sign in, or contact PlayStation Support and request that the account remain open.
What you can lose if the account is closed
For the UK process, closure cuts off access to PSN and to products purchased through that account. That means a person could lose the ability to use digitally purchased games or other account-linked products even if the PS5 hardware itself still works. The terms’ “irreversible” language means the closed account cannot simply be restored through a later sign-in.
A separate US support page describes a 30-day cancellation window when a user requests account closure. That 30-day period concerns a user-initiated cancellation request; it should not be confused with the UK inactivity warning period or treated as a worldwide inactivity rule.

Inactivity closure and suspension are different problems
An account can become unusable for reasons other than inactivity. Sony’s suspension guidance describes enforcement action against an account or a console for rule breaches or other platform-protection reasons.

If you suddenly cannot sign in, cannot use multiplayer or cannot open the Store, check whether Sony identifies the problem as a suspension rather than assuming the account was closed for inactivity. The remedy and review path are different.
Is the 36-month PSN rule worldwide?
No universal deadline is established by the official pages reviewed. The explicit 36-month language, registered-email warning and six-month response window come from the UK PSN terms. The US terms reviewed in April 2026 use broader dormant-data and enforcement language without publishing that same timetable. Other regions may have their own consumer and service terms, so a UK rule should not be presented as a deadline that automatically applies to every PS5 owner.
Quick Recap
What PS5 owners should do now
- Sign in through Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign in while the console is connected to the internet.
- Make sure the email registered to PSN is still accessible and monitored.
- Read any Sony inactivity notice carefully and use the stated six-month response period if it applies to your account.
- If access is blocked, determine whether Sony has suspended the account or console before treating the problem as inactivity closure.
