Yes—the PS5 has a physical power button. Sony documents the button on the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 (slim) model groups. It can start the console, enter rest mode, or shut the system down when held until the console beeps.
You can also turn on a PS5 with a paired controller. The important safety rule is to wait until the power indicator is completely off before disconnecting the console from electricity.

What the PS5 power button does
Sony describes the control in its official button-functions documentation as: “Turn your console on or off, or put it in rest mode.” That is a physical switch on the console itself, not merely a touch-sensitive mark or an option that exists only in the PlayStation menus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA normal press is used to start the console when it is fully off. The same control can also wake the PS5 into rest mode, depending on the console’s current state and the way the press is interpreted. To shut the console down completely from the hardware, Sony says to hold the button until it beeps.

The button is useful when the DualSense controller is unavailable, out of charge, unpaired, or being used by someone else. It is also the fallback control when the television is off and you need to start the console before using the on-screen menus.
Which PS5 models have a documented physical button?
Sony’s public button diagrams specifically cover two model groups. The broad hardware answer is the same for both, but the console’s shape and exact visual placement differ.
| Model group | What Sony documents | How to identify the location |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-1000 | The original PS5 design, in both disc and digital configurations, has a labeled physical power button in Sony’s front-view diagram. | Use the front-view button diagram for the CFI-1000 family. Do not assume the control’s position from a photograph of a different revision. |
| CFI-2000 (slim) | The slim PS5 also has a labeled physical power button in Sony’s button-functions diagram. | Orient the slim console with its front facing you, then use the diagram for the relevant CFI-2000 configuration. |
| CFI-2000/7000 references | Sony’s disc-drive setup instructions for this model grouping refer to the power button while describing the console in a front-facing orientation. | For a later or region-specific revision not shown in the button-functions diagrams, consult that console’s manual rather than guessing from an older model. |
Model numbers begin with “CFI” and are printed on the console and its packaging. Because Sony has released revisions with different exterior layouts, identifying that number is the safest way to choose the right diagram.
How to find the button
Start with the console’s orientation
Sony’s diagrams are front-view illustrations. Put the PS5 so the front panel faces you, then compare the physical controls with the drawing for your model group. This avoids a common mistake: looking at the rear connectors or rotating a vertically installed console and interpreting left and right from the wrong viewpoint.
Disc and digital editions
The presence of a disc drive changes the console’s shape, but it does not remove the power button. A disc-equipped unit and a digital unit may have different front contours, so use the matching model illustration instead of relying on the disc slot as a landmark.
When the button is hard to distinguish
Standby lighting can make the front controls easier to identify. With the console operating, the power indicator is white; in rest mode it is orange. Do not press or move the console merely to chase a light if it is operating normally. If your unit is a revision that is not represented by Sony’s public diagram, the exact manual for that CFI number is the authoritative placement reference.
Turning on the PS5 with the console button
- Place the console in a stable position with its front oriented toward you.
- Press the physical power button once.
- Watch the power indicator. Sony identifies white as the on state.
- Wait for the startup sequence to finish before disconnecting accessories or switching inputs on the television.
A single press is not the same as a forced shutdown. If the PS5 is already running, avoid repeatedly tapping the button while the system is busy; use the on-screen power controls when you want a deliberate shutdown.
Can you turn on a PS5 without the controller?
Yes. Pressing the console’s physical power button starts it, so a controller is not required for the initial power-on.
Sony also documents another method: a paired controller can turn on the console when you press its PS button. That option is convenient once the controller is paired and charged, but it does not replace the physical button. If the controller is unavailable, the console control remains the direct method.

After startup, you may need a working controller to navigate games and system menus. The physical button is primarily a hardware power control; it is not a substitute for every function performed through Control Center.
Rest mode, on, and fully off
The indicator tells you which power state you are dealing with. Sony identifies white when the PS5 is on and orange when it is in rest mode. A dark indicator means the console is no longer showing an active or rest-mode light.

| State | Indicator described by Sony | What it means for button use |
|---|---|---|
| On | White | The console is operating. Use Control Center for a normal shutdown, or hold the physical button until it beeps when Sony’s hardware shutdown procedure is required. |
| Rest mode | Orange | The console is not fully shut down. A power-button press can wake or otherwise control the console according to its current state and settings. |
| Fully off | No active indicator | A press of the physical button starts the PS5. |
Rest mode and a complete shutdown are not interchangeable. Rest mode leaves the console in a low-power standby state, while a full shutdown ends the active session. Choose the state based on whether you want the PS5 available for a quick wake or completely stopped.
How to turn the PS5 off completely
Use the on-screen method
- Press the PS button on a paired controller to open the Control Center.
- Select Power.
- Select Turn Off PS5.
- Wait for the screen to go blank and for the power indicator to finish changing state.
This is Sony’s documented menu route for a complete shutdown. It is preferable when the controller and display are available because the system can close software normally.
Use the console button
- Locate the physical power button using the diagram for your CFI model group.
- Press and hold the button until the console beeps.
- Release it and wait. Sony says the screen goes blank and the indicator flashes white before switching off.
Holding the button is different from a quick press. Do not keep holding it after the shutdown signal unless Sony’s instructions for your exact model tell you otherwise.
Power-indicator behavior during shutdown
The indicator may not go dark immediately. Sony’s shutdown description includes a blank screen followed by a flashing-white phase before the console switches off. Treat that flashing period as part of the shutdown process, not as permission to unplug the system.
Once the indicator is fully off, the PS5 has completed the visible shutdown sequence. If it is solid or blinking, wait rather than removing the power cable or switching off a power strip.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why unplugging at the wrong time is risky
Sony’s quick-start guidance warns against unplugging the console while the indicator is solid or blinking. Interrupting power during those states can cause data to be lost or corrupted and may damage the console.
- Do not pull the power cable immediately after pressing the power button.
- Do not use a wall switch or power strip to force the PS5 off while the indicator is lit or flashing.
- If the screen is blank but the indicator is still active, wait for the indicator to finish.
- Only disconnect the console after the shutdown is complete and the indicator is no longer lit.
This warning applies whether you started shutdown from Control Center or by holding the physical button. The safe checkpoint is the indicator’s completed transition, not merely the television losing its picture.

What to do if you cannot identify your model
Look for the CFI model code printed on the console or its original packaging. Match that code to Sony’s documentation before relying on a photograph or a video made for another revision. The CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 (slim) groups are the ones explicitly represented in the cited button-functions diagrams.

If your number belongs to a later or regional revision, use its model-specific manual. Sony maintains separate manuals because exterior details and disc-drive arrangements can vary even though the console still provides a physical power control.
When asking for help, include the complete CFI code and whether the console has a disc drive. That information lets another person reference the correct front-view orientation instead of giving directions based on an incompatible chassis.
Common button mistakes
Confusing a quick press with a hold
A quick press and a press-and-hold are different actions. Use a quick press to start the console or access its normal power behavior; use the documented hold-until-beep procedure when you need a hardware shutdown.
Assuming the controller is mandatory
The controller is an alternative, not a requirement. The console button can start the PS5 by itself. Conversely, a paired controller can start it through the PS button, so either method is valid when available.
Recommended Free Tools
Unplugging because the display is blank
A blank display can occur before the shutdown sequence has finished. Check the indicator and wait through any flashing-white stage before disconnecting power.
Using the wrong model diagram
The original and slim consoles do not have identical exterior shapes. Confirm whether you have a CFI-1000 or CFI-2000-family console, and consult the exact manual for revisions outside Sony’s illustrated groups.
Bottom line for PS5 owners
The PS5 includes a physical power button on the console. Sony documents it for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 (slim) families and describes it as a control for powering on, powering off, or entering rest mode. A paired controller offers a second way to start the system, while Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5 provides the normal complete-shutdown path. Whatever method you use, wait until the indicator is fully off before unplugging the console.
