An image described in August 2024 coverage as a likely PS5 Pro design leak appeared before Sony announced the console on September 10. Sony later confirmed the released Pro has three exterior blades, but the available reporting does not establish that Sony authorized the earlier image or that it showed the final production design.
What was revealed, and when?
On August 29, 2024, IGN reported on a circulating image as a likely PlayStation 5 design leak. That establishes that a pre-announcement image story was published; it does not establish who created or circulated the image, whether Sony approved it, or whether the image was an accurate rendering of the retail console. IGN’s August 29 report is therefore evidence of a leak story, not proof that Sony revealed the final design early.

Sony officially announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and set its launch for November 7, 2024. In the announcement, Sony described the console as keeping a look consistent with the wider PS5 family. The strongest defensible comparison is limited to visible features: the family silhouette, a central black section, and three exterior blades. Those similarities show that the earlier image anticipated recognizable elements of the released design; they do not authenticate the image as Sony’s or establish that it depicted the production model. Sony’s September 10 announcement confirms the official reveal date and describes the console’s place in the PS5 family.
What are the three lines on the PS5 Pro for?
Sony explained their purpose after launch. In an April 21, 2025 teardown, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida said: “The distinctive three slits are new airflow paths that were not present in the original PS5, or the current PS5.” Sony’s engineers described the blades as both a design feature and functional airflow paths: the Pro needs more air for cooling, and its cooling system includes larger rear vent surfaces. Sony also said a louver structure is intended to reduce some fan noise escaping toward the front. These are the manufacturer’s explanations, not independent measurements of temperatures or noise. Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown provides the engineering detail.

What did Sony confirm about the finished console?
Sony’s November 7, 2024 getting-started guide lists approximate dimensions of 388 × 89 × 216 mm (width × height × depth) and a weight of about 3.1 kg. Sony described the Pro at announcement as the same height as the original PS5 and the same width as the then-current PS5 model. The setup guide supplies the later published measurements.
The visual match between a pre-launch image and these confirmed design details can support saying that the image anticipated the console’s broad look. The evidence does not support saying Sony itself “revealed” the final design, or that the image was definitively the final production design.

What else matters if you are considering a PS5 Pro?
- Performance claims: At announcement, Sony said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, and can render gameplay up to 45% faster. Sony also described ray tracing as more than twice as fast; its November launch release said double and, at times, triple the speed. These are Sony’s comparisons, not independent benchmark results, and enhanced features are available only in selected PS5 Pro-enhanced games and vary by game. The September announcement and November launch release give the dated claims.
- Storage: The console includes a 2TB SSD and has an M.2 SSD slot. Sony says an M.2 drive can be transferred from a PS5; its setup guide covers the console’s setup and storage details. Sony’s getting-started guide is the relevant setup reference.
- Disc playback: PS5 Pro launched without a disc drive. Sony sells an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately; its guide says it supports PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. Sony’s announcement notes the separately sold drive, while the setup guide describes supported media.
- Launch-era pricing: Sony announced original recommended retail prices of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax. These are announcement-era prices, not verified current prices. Sony’s September announcement lists them.
