Some older games run or look better on PS5 Pro, but the result depends on the title. A game with a dedicated PS5 Pro enhancement can use Pro-specific graphics or performance features; other PS4 and PS5 games may benefit from Game Boost. Neither feature guarantees a visible improvement in every older game.
What “PS5 Pro enhanced” means
Sony says more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced for PS5 Pro. These games may use the console’s additional capabilities to improve visuals, performance, or both. The exact changes are game-specific, and the roster can change as developers add support. Check Sony’s current PS5 Pro enhanced-games listing for a particular title rather than assuming that an older release has been updated.

For a listed game, look for the details of its enhancement: image clarity or resolution, frame-rate options and stability, and whether it adds or improves ray tracing. A Pro label does not, by itself, specify which of these changes the game makes.
What Game Boost can do for older games
Game Boost is distinct from a dedicated Pro enhancement. Sony says it can provide faster and smoother frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. That wording is important: Sony does not promise a change for every backward-compatible game, nor does it say that Game Boost gives every title a new graphics mode.

#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
A game can therefore benefit from Game Boost without appearing as a title with a dedicated PS5 Pro enhancement. Conversely, if no specific benefit is documented for a game, that absence is not proof that its performance is identical—it means a title-specific improvement has not been established here.
How to check an older game before upgrading
- Check for a dedicated Pro enhancement. Search the current Sony listing for the game. Confirm that the listing refers to the version you play, since a PS5 release and a PS4 release of the same game may not have the same support.
- Check the game’s latest update information. A patch or supported setting may be needed for a particular enhancement, including PSSR. Confirm the current patch and options in the game rather than relying on an old announcement.
- Identify the change that matters to you. Look for specific information about resolution or image clarity, frame rate, frame-rate stability, or ray tracing. A general Pro-enhanced label does not tell you which aspect changes.
- Check display requirements for the feature you want. Sony describes 60fps or up to 120fps, ray tracing, and AI-enhanced 4K as capabilities for compatible games; compatible display requirements apply. These are not guaranteed settings for every older game.
- Compare the same game and mode. If you can, check the developer’s description of the Pro mode and compare it with the standard PS5 option. Results vary by title, so a broad console specification is not a substitute for game-specific details.
PSSR and the updated version
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-based upscaling technology. PS5 Pro can use it in compatible games, but support and results vary by title; it is not a universal upgrade applied to all older games.
On March 16, 2026, Sony announced broader support for an upgraded PSSR version and said owners could enable the updated image-quality setting in supported games. Sony named Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, and Monster Hunter Wilds among the titles. Availability depends on game support and may change, so check the current game settings and update information. Remedy Entertainment Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto said the upgrade improves “image upscaling quality and stability”; that is Remedy’s assessment, not a universal result for every title. What Sony’s compatibility numbers do—and do not—tell you
Sony says PS5 Pro can play over 8,500 PS4 games and that more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced for Pro. These figures describe compatibility and the size of the enhanced PS5 roster, respectively; they do not measure how many older games receive a visible or measurable improvement. Sony’s claims about 60fps or up to 120fps, ray tracing, and AI-enhanced 4K also apply to compatible games, not the entire backward-compatible library. See Sony’s PS5 Pro product information.

Base the decision on the games you actually play. The strongest reason to expect a specific change is a current, game-specific enhancement or supported PSSR feature with clearly described benefits. Game Boost may help some other PS4 or PS5 titles, but its benefit is less predictable from the console alone. If the games you care about have no documented Pro change, do not assume that their image quality or frame rate will be noticeably different.
The PS5 Pro console is required for the Pro-specific features described here. Review the current support information for your shortlist of games before treating any general capability as a reason to upgrade.
