PS5 Pro GPU Specs: What the Early Leak Got Right—and Wrong

The PS5 Pro’s official GPU rating is 16.7 TFLOPS—not 33.5. Here’s what Sony’s performance claims mean and what the early leak discussion got wrong.

The PS5 Pro’s GPU is officially listed as an AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine with 16.7 TFLOPS. Sony says it has 67% more compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the “current” PS5 at launch, supporting up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are different measures, and Sony’s “up to” figure is not a promise that every game runs 45% faster. The once-circulated 33.5 TFLOPS figure came from a mistaken interpretation, according to reporting on system architect Mark Cerny’s post-launch explanation.

What are the PS5 Pro GPU specs?

Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide lists a 16.7 TFLOPS, AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine. Sony’s November 2024 launch announcement compares the Pro with the “current PlayStation 5” and says the new console has 67% more compute units and memory that is 28% faster. Sony connects those changes to up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.

These figures describe different things. Compute units are GPU resources; memory speed describes how quickly data can move through memory; TFLOPS is a theoretical measure of floating-point throughput. The “up to 45%” figure is Sony’s stated rendering uplift, not an across-the-board result for every game or a substitute for a game-by-game comparison.

Measure What Sony or reporting says How to read it
Graphics engine 16.7 TFLOPS; AMD Radeon RDNA-based, according to Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide The official listed specification; it does not, by itself, predict a game’s frame rate.
Compute units 67% more than the “current” PS5, according to Sony’s 2024 launch announcement A relative hardware count, not a percentage increase in every game’s performance.
Memory speed 28% faster than the “current” PS5, according to Sony’s 2024 launch announcement A memory-speed comparison, distinct from GPU compute throughput.
Gameplay rendering Up to 45% faster, according to Sony’s 2024 launch announcement Sony’s upper-end claim; actual gains depend on the game and how it uses the hardware.
Ray tracing Rays can be cast at double, and at times triple, the speed of the “current” PS5, according to Sony’s 2024 launch announcement A separate claim about ray-tracing capability, not a blanket frame-rate multiplier.

The comparison baseline is Sony’s “current PlayStation 5” at the time of the November 2024 launch, not a claim that every PS5 model or game has identical results. Sony’s public launch figures are headline claims; they are not a representative independent benchmark across games.

Was the PS5 Pro GPU leak right about 33.5 TFLOPS?

No. Pre-launch discussion included a 33.5 TFLOPS estimate, but Tom’s Hardware’s December 2024 account of Cerny’s technical seminar says that number came from a mistaken reading of how architectural features affect the theoretical calculation. The clarified figure is 16.7 TFLOPS, matching Sony’s published Safety Guide specification. Treat 33.5 TFLOPS as a leak-era error, not the PS5 Pro’s official GPU rating.

Leak coverage did establish an early conversation about the Pro’s specifications; it did not make every predicted number authoritative. Digital Foundry’s March 2024 coverage is an example of that pre-launch discussion, while Sony’s later product guide is the primary source for the listed 16.7 TFLOPS figure.

Is the PS5 Pro GPU RDNA 3?

It is more accurate to describe it as a customized RDNA 2 design incorporating RDNA 3 features, as reported by Tom’s Hardware from Cerny’s seminar. Sony’s consumer specification guide uses the broader phrase “AMD Radeon RDNA-based”; it does not label the console’s GPU a standard RDNA 3 part. Calling it an ordinary off-the-shelf RDNA 3 GPU overstates what the public specifications establish.

What changed in ray tracing?

Sony’s launch announcement says the Pro can cast ray-tracing rays at double, and at times triple, the speed of the current PS5. That is a Sony claim about ray-tracing capability; how visible or useful the gain is depends on a game’s implementation and workload.

Tom’s Hardware’s seminar reporting gives more technical detail than Sony’s consumer spec table: PS5 Pro supports BVH8 where PS5 used BVH4, and its ray intersection engine checks eight boxes and two triangles rather than four boxes and one triangle. The report says these changes are more helpful for reflections on curved and irregular surfaces than for shadows or flat reflections. These implementation details come from reporting on Cerny’s technical seminar, not from the public Safety Guide.

How do PSSR and the GPU work together?

GPU rendering capacity, ray-tracing hardware and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) are related to the final image, but they do different jobs. The GPU supplies rendering resources; ray-tracing hardware accelerates particular lighting and reflection calculations; PSSR is Sony’s AI-driven upscaling feature. PSSR is not a GPU model, and the available material does not support attributing a game’s image-quality improvement to one leaked GPU feature alone.

Sony’s December 2024 technical-seminar announcement says Cerny’s presentation covers what “advanced” means in ray tracing, differences between FLOPS and TOPS, and the challenge of developing efficient machine-learning hardware for PSSR. It also announced a deeper SIE–AMD collaboration focused on machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay. Sony’s April 2025 PS5 Pro teardown offers further engineering context and describes PSSR.

What should players compare in actual games?

A console-wide headline number cannot tell you which mode to choose in a particular game. Check the game’s own PS5 Pro support and mode descriptions, then compare the options that matter to you:

  • Resolution and image reconstruction: Check whether a mode targets higher image quality and whether it uses PSSR.
  • Frame rate: Look for the mode’s stated frame-rate target and whether it prioritizes performance or visual detail.
  • Ray-tracing effects: Confirm which effects the game adds or improves; a faster ray-tracing capability does not mean every title uses it.
  • Mode-specific trade-offs: A Pro-enhanced mode may balance resolution, effects and frame rate differently from the base PS5 version.

Sony CEO of Platform Business Group Hideaki Nishino described the console’s aim at launch: “With PlayStation 5 Pro, we wanted to make sure that the most dedicated gamers, as well as game creators, could utilize the most advanced console technology, taking the PlayStation 5 experience even farther.” That statement expresses Sony’s goal; for a player, the practical result still depends on each game’s implementation.
