Sony announced the dates on September 10, 2024; its PS5 Pro setup guide confirms the worldwide launch date.

What the PS5 Pro offers
Sony positioned the Pro as a higher-performance version of PS5, emphasizing improved rendering, ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-driven upscaling feature. In its 2024 announcement, Sony said the GPU had 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5, memory was 28% faster, and the changes enabled up to 45% faster rendering. Those are Sony’s stated comparisons and performance claims, not independent benchmark results.
Sony’s stated goal was to offer higher-fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates. Actual benefits depend on how each game uses the hardware: “PS5 Pro Enhanced” features vary by title, and some require a compatible display.

Enhanced games and compatibility
Sony said more than 50 games had Pro enhancements available at launch. Its launch-period examples included Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This is a launch snapshot, not a complete current catalog; consult the game’s listing or the current PlayStation catalog for its supported features.
The September 2024 announcement also named PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore among compatible accessories.
Storage, disc drive and physical media
The PS5 Pro launched with a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The console itself has no built-in disc drive. Sony says the separately sold Disc Drive for PS5 works with the Pro for PS5 and supported PS4 physical games, 4K Blu-ray discs and DVDs.
Price: launch MSRP and current recommended prices
Sony’s original 2024 launch prices were $699.99 in the US, £699.99 in the UK, €799.99 in Europe and ¥119,980 in Japan. These are historical launch MSRPs, not current prices.

Sony’s setup guide lists approximate dimensions of 388 × 89 × 216 mm (width × height × depth) and a weight of about 3.1 kg. The announcement described the Pro as the same height as the original PS5 and the same width as the then-current PS5 model.
Is the PS5 Pro worth considering now?
For a purchase decision, focus on whether the games you play offer Pro-specific features, whether your display can show the relevant improvements, and whether you need physical-disc playback. Compare the current local price with your budget: the Pro is disc-less as sold, and adding a Disc Drive is a separate purchase. Sony’s published performance figures describe its own comparison with the then-current PS5; they do not establish how every game performs or whether the upgrade is worthwhile for every player.
