Sony says its GPU has 67% more compute units than the standard PS5 and claims up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. The Pro launched on November 7, 2024; its disc drive is sold separately, and its enhanced graphics features depend on game support.

What is different from the standard PS5?
The Pro’s main change is its graphics hardware and the options it can offer in games designed or updated to use it. Sony’s September 2024 announcement says the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Sony also described ray-tracing speeds as more than double those of the PS5 in its reveal, and as double or, in some cases, triple in its launch announcement. These are Sony’s platform-level claims, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee of the same improvement in every game.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
In practice, the upgrade is best judged game by game: a Pro-enhanced title may offer a higher frame rate, sharper image, more detailed ray tracing, or a combination. The result depends on the game’s implementation and the display you use. Sony does not claim that every PS5 game receives a Pro-specific enhancement.
How PSSR and compatible games affect performance
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-driven upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. It is intended to improve the displayed image by reconstructing a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution rendering process. Sony’s current US product page says compatible games can combine 60 fps or up to 120 fps, ray tracing, and PSSR-enhanced 4K on a 4K TV. That describes what supported games can offer, not a mode available in every title.
PSSR support has evolved since launch. On March 16, 2026, Sony announced a system software update introducing broad support for an upgraded PSSR version, describing improvements to image stability, fine-detail clarity, and consistency in supported games. Which games use the upgraded version can change as developers update their titles; check Sony’s current US PS5 Pro product page for the latest compatibility information.
Sony also says the console can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, and that Game Boost can improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. The number is Sony’s compatibility figure, not an independent library survey, and Game Boost does not mean every game runs faster.

Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No disc drive is installed in the PS5 Pro. Sony sells an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately. Once fitted, Sony says it supports physical PS5 games and supported PS4 discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. If you own physical games or watch films from discs, include the separate drive in the cost and setup decision. Sony’s PS5 Pro setup and FAQ article explains the accessory’s use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the PS5 Pro worth it if you already own a PS5?
There is no single performance figure that settles the upgrade question. The Pro is most relevant if the games you play have enhancements you value, your display can show the resulting resolution or frame-rate gains, and you are willing to pay for the console and any accessories you need. If your favorite games lack Pro-specific support, or your current PS5 already meets your needs, the platform-level claims alone do not establish that an upgrade will make a noticeable difference in those games.
- Check your games: Look for the specific Pro features and modes offered by the titles you play, rather than assuming every game benefits equally.
- Consider your display: Sony’s combined 4K, ray-tracing, and high-frame-rate claim is for compatible games on a 4K TV; the available experience still varies by title.
- Factor in physical media: The drive is optional and sold separately, so disc owners should account for it.
- Compare current local prices: Sony’s September 2024 announcement listed launch RRPs of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax. Those are historical launch prices, not verified current prices.
Sony announced the console on September 10, 2024, and released it on November 7, 2024. Its launch announcement and product page explain Sony’s feature and performance claims, but the sources cited here do not establish controlled, independent PS5-versus-Pro test results across a set of games.
Can you expand PS5 Pro storage?
Yes. Sony’s CFI-71XX guide lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector, and the internal custom SSD is nominally 2 TB. Available internal capacity is less than the nominal figure because some space is reserved. Sony’s guide does not identify a specific M.2 drive as compatible; check PlayStation’s current requirements before buying an expansion SSD.
