PS5 Pro supports both horizontal and vertical placement, provided you use the correct support: attach the included horizontal feet for a flat setup, or use a compatible vertical stand when placing it upright. Sony’s published guidance does not show that either orientation cools better or collects less dust. The practical choice is the one that fits your space while leaving the console’s vents clear.

Neither option is inherently the “better ventilated” one based on the available official guidance. Use the required support, position the console securely, and apply the same clearance and ventilation rules in either orientation.
What Sony says about PS5 Pro airflow and dust
Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown describes three exterior blades as airflow paths and says air is taken in and exhausted from the rear and bottom surfaces. The teardown also describes a redesigned fan and a carefully selected heat-sink layout. These are design details, not results from a horizontal-versus-vertical cooling test.
In the same teardown, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida says: “On the top side, just like in previous PS5 models, a dust catcher is provided for cleaning purposes.” Sony identifies this feature for maintenance; it does not claim that one placement prevents dust buildup.

How to place the console for ventilation
Sony’s PS5 ventilation guidance recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console. Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed, avoid cramped locations, and do not put the console on long-fibre carpet. Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide also warns against operating it in a closed cabinet or another place where heat can build up.
- Keep the vents clear in either orientation.
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side, following Sony’s support recommendation.
- Avoid long-fibre carpet, cramped spaces, and closed cabinets where heat may accumulate.
- Do not treat the vertical stand or horizontal feet as a substitute for ventilation clearance.
Cleaning dust from PS5 Pro vents
Sony recommends preventing dust from building up in or around the vents. For accumulated dust, its support instructions are to disconnect the AC power cable from the rear of the system and use a low-powered vacuum around the air vents. The guidance gives no orientation-specific cleaning schedule or dust measurement.

Does vertical placement cause overheating or more dust?
Sony’s published setup and safety guidance supports both placements with the correct hardware, but the official sources cited here do not report controlled temperature comparisons, dust-accumulation measurements, or service-rate data by orientation. Claims that vertical placement necessarily runs hotter or gathers more dust therefore are not established by these sources. Focus on correct support and keeping the console’s air paths clear rather than assuming one orientation has a proven thermal or dust advantage.
