It is not a guaranteed 45% boost in every game: Sony’s headline figures describe hardware and potential performance, while actual improvements depend on each game. If your current PS5 already meets your needs—or your favorite games make little use of Pro features—the added cost is harder to justify.
What is the difference between PS5 Pro and PS5?
PS5 Pro is a more powerful, disc-less member of the PS5 family. Its main upgrades are graphics processing headroom, AI-assisted image upscaling called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), more advanced ray tracing, and a 2TB built-in SSD. Sony also lists Wi-Fi 7 support in territories where it is available.

At announcement in 2024, Sony said PS5 Pro had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. These are Sony’s platform claims, not a promise that every game will render 45% faster. Sony also said the Pro could cast rays at more than twice the speed of the then-current PS5; its launch material said the improvement could sometimes reach three times the speed.
| Feature | PS5 Pro | What it means for an upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics hardware | Sony claimed 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5 at announcement. | More potential graphics performance, but the result varies by game. |
| Image reconstruction | PSSR uses machine-learning-based upscaling on supported games. | Can improve image clarity; its value depends on implementation and how noticeable the difference is on your display. |
| Ray tracing | Hardware supports more advanced ray tracing, including reflections and refractions. | Only relevant where a game uses enhanced ray tracing. |
| Storage | 2TB built in. | Useful if your installed library regularly fills your current storage. |
| Disc drive | No drive included; a compatible PS5 Disc Drive is sold separately. | Physical-game and UHD Blu-ray owners should include the drive in the total cost. |
| Compatibility | Plays PS5 games and more than 8,500 PS4 games, according to Sony. | Your existing library carries over, but compatibility does not guarantee that every game is enhanced. |
Sony’s current product page, reviewed October 4, 2026, lists more than 100 PS5 titles with Pro enhancements. The catalog can change, so check whether the games you actually play are supported rather than treating the overall count as a guarantee of improvement to your library.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
How much faster or better do games look?
There is no single performance gain that applies to every PS5 game. Developers choose how to use the Pro’s additional headroom, and Sony says Pro features vary by title. A supported game may use PSSR to improve image clarity, offer higher or steadier frame rates, add more advanced ray tracing, or combine changes. The exact resolution, graphics modes, and frame rates are game-specific.
That makes the Pro’s advertised hardware figures useful context, but not a substitute for checking a particular game. Sony describes the potential for up to 45% faster gameplay rendering; the phrase “up to” matters. It does not mean every game runs 45% faster, nor does it establish a specific frame rate or visual improvement for any individual title.
For PS4 and PS5 titles, Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported games, according to Sony. This is not a claim that every backward-compatible game will run better. Sony says PS5 Pro plays more than 8,500 PS4 games, but compatibility and enhancement are separate things.

Who should upgrade to PS5 Pro?
Upgrade is more compelling if…
- You play several games that appear on Sony’s PS5 Pro Enhanced list, and their Pro-specific changes matter to you.
- You prioritize image quality, more advanced ray tracing, or higher and steadier frame rates over keeping your current console.
- You have a 4K or high-refresh display capable of showing the changes you care about.
- Your installed library makes the Pro’s 2TB of built-in storage useful.
- You are comfortable paying the difference between the Pro and your alternatives after checking current local prices.
Keeping your PS5 is more compelling if…
- You are satisfied with how your current PS5 performs.
- Your favorite games do not have Pro enhancements you value, or you do not notice the likely visual and performance changes.
- You would rather put the price difference toward games or other priorities.
- You own physical games and the added cost of a separately sold disc drive weakens the value for you.
What should disc owners and accessory owners know?
PS5 Pro does not include an optical disc drive. Sony offers a compatible PS5 Disc Drive separately, so physical-game collectors and UHD Blu-ray users should compare the console’s total cost with the drive included. Do not assume that a drive from another console or an unverified model will work.

That can make the transition easier if you already use them. Wi-Fi 7 is supported in relevant territories, but taking advantage of it requires a compatible router and network; Sony’s feature listing is not a promise of faster speeds or lower latency on every connection.
How to make the upgrade decision
- Check your games. Look up the current PS5 Pro Enhanced list and identify the titles you play most. Judge the upgrade against those titles, not the total number of supported games.
- Check your display. Consider whether your screen can show the resolution, image-quality, or frame-rate changes you want to see.
- Calculate the real cost. Compare current local PS5 and PS5 Pro prices. If you need a disc drive, include its separately sold price. Sony’s US launch MSRP was $699.99 on November 7, 2024; that is historical launch context, not a current price quote.
- Weigh storage and accessories. Decide whether 2TB built in solves a real storage problem for you, and confirm the compatibility of accessories you rely on.
- Compare with what you have. If you are happy with your PS5 and the games you play do not benefit meaningfully from Pro enhancements, there is no need to upgrade just because the Pro has stronger hardware.
Bottom line: PS5 Pro vs. PS5
PS5 Pro is aimed at players who want the best available PS5 graphics and performance in games that support its features. Its 2TB storage and existing PS5 compatibility are practical advantages, but neither makes it the right purchase for every PS5 owner. Check enhancements for your games, your display, and the full local cost—including a separate disc drive if needed—before deciding.
