The two are connected through Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration, but they are not interchangeable names for one feature. What either one does—and how it looks or performs—depends on the specific game and implementation.
What PSSR and FSR are
PS5 Pro PSSR
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning image upscaler, introduced as a PS5 Pro feature. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals. The feature is implemented in compatible PS5 Pro games; it is not a setting that automatically applies to every title.
When Sony announced PS5 Pro in September 2024, it said the console had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, and claimed up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s manufacturer figures, not independent measurements of PSSR or a comparison with FSR. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement provides the console context.
AMD FSR
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is AMD’s suite of game technologies, not one fixed upscaler. AMD’s current overview includes upscaling as well as distinct features such as frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching. These capabilities do different jobs: upscaling reconstructs an image at a higher output resolution from lower-resolution rendering, while frame generation creates additional frames. Which features are available depends on the FSR generation, game integration and hardware support. See AMD’s FSR technologies overview for its current feature information.

How Sony and AMD’s collaboration fits in
Sony and AMD announced a deeper collaboration on machine-learning graphics and gameplay technology in December 2024. Sony later said that the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network grew out of their Project Amethyst work, and described AMD FSR 4 upscaling on PC as another demonstration of that collaboration. The shared development roots explain a relationship between the technologies; they do not mean a PS5 Pro game is simply running the PC version of FSR 4, or that the two have identical tuning, platform support or game availability.
Sony announced upgraded PSSR on February 27, 2026, naming Resident Evil Requiem as the first game to use the newer version. Sony said the revised algorithm and neural network take a different approach from the earlier PSSR. Its announcement describes the link to Project Amethyst and AMD FSR 4: Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement. Sony had outlined its broader machine-learning collaboration with AMD in its December 2024 PS5 Pro technical seminar.

Why image quality and performance vary by game
An upscaler reconstructs a higher-resolution output from an image rendered internally at a lower resolution. Lower internal resolution can reduce rendering workload and create performance headroom, but the reconstruction has to preserve detail and remain stable as the scene moves. The chosen internal resolution, output target, performance mode and game-specific tuning all affect the result.
Ubisoft’s explanation of the PS5 Pro version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows discusses the trade-off in that title, including a 1080p input reconstructed to 2160p and the studio’s findings comparing PSSR with TAA. That is a developer account about one game and a different reconstruction technique—not a controlled PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark or a result that can be applied to every title. Sony says upgraded PSSR improves image stability and clarity in fine details while giving developers more flexibility to balance fidelity and performance. Those are Sony’s descriptions of the update, not a guarantee that every upgraded game will look or run better in the same way. Sony explicitly notes that results vary by title.
How to compare PSSR and FSR fairly
A meaningful comparison needs to identify the exact game and implementation rather than compare feature names in the abstract. For the clearest result:

- Use the same game and scene. Different art styles, lighting and motion can expose different strengths or artifacts.
- Match the output resolution and graphics mode. A performance mode and a fidelity mode may use different internal resolutions, settings or frame-rate targets.
- Record the specific upscaler and version. “FSR” alone is not precise enough: note the generation and feature, and distinguish upscaling from frame generation.
- Compare moving footage as well as still images. Check fine detail, temporal stability, motion artifacts and the frame rate under the same conditions.
- Check the game’s current patch notes and settings. Support can change with updates, and console options may only apply to compatible games.
The official material cited here does not establish a neutral, controlled PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark across matched games and settings. A result from one title, platform or implementation cannot determine a universal winner.

Upgraded PSSR depends on game support
On March 16, 2026, Sony said upgraded PSSR was rolling out through a system software update and named supported games including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert. Sony also described an optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality system setting for existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. The setting is not a universal switch for games without PSSR support, and Sony says the result varies by title. Consult Sony’s March 2026 support announcement and check current game updates for availability.

FSR support depends on feature and hardware generation
AMD’s product information identifies its newer machine-learning FSR upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics cards, and lists RX 6000 support as planned for 2027. That forward-looking statement applies to the newer ML-based feature, not to every earlier FSR generation or every FSR feature. AMD’s support matrix can change, so check its current FSR page for the particular version, feature and hardware in question.
Is QSSR the same as PS5 Pro PSSR?
No. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026 for selected games on the original PS5, describing it as a streamlined performance tier of AI upscaling. Sony initially named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. QSSR is related PlayStation upscaling context, but it is not another name for PS5 Pro PSSR.
