QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s performance-focused AI upscaling option for the standard PlayStation 5. Sony says it is related to PSSR, which remains its gold-standard option for PS5 Pro. Daniel Craig, a Sony graphics R&D principal engineer, described QSSR as a “drop-in replacement” for games that already support PSSR—but, according to Wccftech’s account of his interview with Digital Foundry, developers may still need a few days to tune settings and texture streaming. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed retrofit schedule.
What QSSR changes on the standard PS5
Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution on October 1, 2026. Like PSSR, QSSR uses AI to upscale a game image, with the aim of improving detail and image stability. Sony says PSSR’s computational demands had previously kept that approach off the standard PS5; QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for the console. Sony developed it through Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s announcement calls QSSR a new performance tier and says PSSR remains the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro.
Sony describes QSSR as improving image detail and stability on PS5, but its announcement does not quantify that improvement in a general comparison. The key distinction is positioning: QSSR is the performance-focused path for the standard console, while PSSR remains Sony’s higher-end option on PS5 Pro.
Why “drop-in replacement” does not mean zero-effort
Wccftech reports that Craig told Digital Foundry: “QSSR is fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR.” The phrase indicates that existing PSSR support can provide a relatively direct starting point for a QSSR version; it does not mean every game can switch algorithms without developer work.

In the same account, Craig says tuning may take “perhaps a few days.” A team may need to adjust game settings, including streaming settings, so higher-quality texture mip levels remain resident. That matters because an upscaler can only reconstruct from the image and detail the game supplies; tuning can be needed to make sure the underlying assets and settings suit the new path. Craig reportedly characterized retrofits as relatively easy and low risk, but his estimate is not a promise that all games will take the same time or receive an update. Wccftech’s report attributes the interview statements to Craig via Digital Foundry.
What early performance reports show—and do not show
Early testing reported for two games suggests the performance cost depends on the game, output target, and mode. These results are examples, not a universal QSSR-versus-PSSR benchmark.

| Game and test context | Reported result | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine, 4K target in demanding cutscenes | An 8–10 FPS difference compared with PSSR on PS5 Pro | Digital Foundry’s early testing, reported by Wccftech on October 2, 2026; specific to the cited cutscenes and comparison. |
| Marvel’s Wolverine, 1440p target | About 1.5–1.8 ms difference; the report also cites a similar 8–10 FPS difference | Digital Foundry’s early testing, reported by Wccftech on October 2, 2026. Dynamic resolution scaling in 60 Hz performance mode reduced the gap. |
| Marvel’s Wolverine, reconstructed from 864p to 1440p | Roughly 1.5–1.8 ms cost versus Insomniac’s existing upscaler | Digital Foundry measurement summarized by Dot Esports on October 2, 2026; this is a separate reported comparison and context. |
| Marvel’s Wolverine, 2160p output in fidelity mode | Around 4.4 ms cost | Digital Foundry measurement summarized by Dot Esports on October 2, 2026; specific to the reported title and mode. |
| Ghost of Yōtei, uncapped VRR performance mode | QSSR reportedly ran almost identically to the game’s stock FSR 3 implementation | Digital Foundry’s early observation, reported by Wccftech; the report says the comparison needed more confirmation at matching input and output resolutions. |
The measurements should not be collapsed into one expected frame-rate or GPU cost. They compare different resolutions, modes, and upscaling paths, and the cited coverage describes early observations rather than a broad result across QSSR titles. Wccftech and Dot Esports provide the reported test contexts.
Which games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games. Its October 1 announcement says patches added QSSR as an additional, optional graphics setting. Sony also says it will make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but that does not confirm a patch for any other existing title. Each studio must decide whether to implement and ship support.

What the retrofit claim means for players
For players, “drop-in” describes the developer’s starting point, not a setting that owners can apply themselves. QSSR support arrives through a game’s implementation and patch; it is not a separate console upgrade or an automatic feature toggle for every PSSR title. If a supported game offers QSSR, its graphics menu determines how players can select it.
Craig reportedly said he was especially interested in future games designed with both QSSR and PSSR in mind. That points to a distinction between retrofitting an existing PSSR game and building a new game around both technologies from the outset: the former may need a few days of tuning, while Sony has not specified a standard development timeline for the latter.
