Usually, no. A PS5 does not take screenshots by itself during ordinary gameplay. You normally create a still image by pressing the DualSense Create button and choosing Take Screenshot, or by using a configured Create-button shortcut. The important exception is trophy capture: if Save Trophy Screenshots is enabled, the console can save an image whenever you earn a trophy.
That setting is easy to confuse with two other features. The PS5 continuously buffers recent gameplay as video, and the PlayStation App can automatically upload supported captures that you already made. Neither feature means the console is silently making ordinary screenshots.

When does a PS5 take a screenshot automatically?
There is one built-in automatic screenshot trigger: earning a trophy. PlayStation lets you save a screenshot at the moment a trophy is unlocked, and you can control that behavior in the console’s capture settings. If a new image appeared immediately after an on-screen trophy notification, trophy capture is the first setting to check.

The Save Trophy Screenshots option determines whether the PS5 stores those images. PlayStation’s trophy guidance also allows screenshots to be limited by trophy grade, so you can choose which grades create an image instead of saving one for every trophy. The same area contains controls for trophy videos and the length of those videos.

Turn Save Trophy Screenshots off if you do not want trophy events creating still images. Disabling it affects future trophy captures; it does not remove screenshots that are already in your Media Gallery.
What is automatic on the PS5, and what is not?
Several capture features sound similar in the console menus but behave differently. Use the trigger and destination in this table to identify what you are seeing.
| Feature | What triggers it | What is captured | Where it is stored or sent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual screenshot | You press Create and select Take Screenshot, or use a Create-button shortcut | One still image of the current screen | PS5 capture storage, viewable in Media Gallery |
| Trophy screenshot | A trophy is earned while trophy screenshot saving is enabled | A still image associated with that trophy event | PS5 capture storage, viewable in Media Gallery |
| Recent-gameplay buffer | The console continuously records recent gameplay in the background | Video, not still screenshots; a selected span can be saved later | Saved to the PS5 when you choose a clip from the Create menu |
| PlayStation App auto-upload | A supported capture has been made and auto-upload conditions are met | Existing screenshots and supported video clips | Transferred to the PlayStation App for up to 14 days |
Sony describes the video buffer plainly: “Video of your recent gameplay is continuously and automatically recorded.” That sentence refers to a rolling video feature, not a process that creates a still image every few seconds. You must select and save a portion of that video if you want to keep it as a clip.
How to stop automatic trophy screenshots
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Captures and Broadcasts.
- Open Auto-Captures, then choose Trophies.
- Switch Save Trophy Screenshots off.
That menu also includes Save Trophy Videos and Trophy Video Duration. Review those independently: turning off screenshots does not necessarily change the trophy-video setting, and changing the video duration does not control still images.
If you still want milestone images, leave trophy screenshots enabled and use the available trophy-grade choices to narrow which unlocks are saved. This is useful when you want major achievement records without creating an image for every minor trophy.
For the official menu labels and trophy options, see PlayStation’s trophy instructions.
How to take a normal screenshot manually
For a standard gameplay screenshot, press the Create button on the DualSense controller. In the Create menu, select Take Screenshot. The image is saved with your other captures and can be opened later in Media Gallery.

The Create button can also be configured for shortcuts, so your exact press pattern may differ from the default configuration. Regardless of the shortcut you use, the key distinction is that a player action requests the still image; ordinary gameplay does not trigger it automatically.

Use the manual method when you want a specific frame rather than a trophy-event image. It also creates the type of screenshot that Sony identifies as eligible for PlayStation App capture uploads.

Does the PS5 record gameplay automatically?
Yes, but it records a rolling video buffer, not a stream of screenshots. The PS5 continuously and automatically records recent gameplay, allowing you to save a selected span of up to one hour. You decide when to preserve the footage through the Create menu.
Saving recent gameplay
- Press the DualSense Create button while in or after gameplay.
- Choose the option for saving recent gameplay.
- Select the span you want to preserve, up to the one-hour limit.
- Confirm the save so the selected video becomes a stored capture.
This explains why a player may find a new video in the gallery without ever deliberately starting a recording. It does not explain a still screenshot appearing at a trophy notification; that remains controlled by the trophy auto-capture setting.
Why screenshots may appear in the PlayStation App
PlayStation App auto-upload is a transfer feature. It sends supported captures that were made on the console to the app; it does not press the Create button or generate screenshots on its own.
Sony says the supported set includes screenshots taken from the Create menu or Create-button shortcuts, plus non-4K gameplay videos shorter than three minutes. Once uploaded, captures remain available in the app for 14 days. That 14-day period is an app availability limit, not a statement that the original console capture is deleted at that time.
Requirements for automatic uploads
- Your PS5 must be linked to the PlayStation App.
- Automatic uploads require the console to be left in Rest Mode with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled.
- The capture must meet Sony’s support conditions, including the non-4K and under-three-minute limits for gameplay video.
If an image is visible on your phone, first determine whether it was already created on the console. Check the console’s Media Gallery and the PlayStation App’s capture area separately. Finding it in the app does not prove that the PS5 generated it automatically; it may simply have transferred a manual or trophy screenshot.

Where to find and manage screenshots on the console
Open Media Gallery from the games home screen to review screenshots and video clips. The Recently created card also displays recent screenshots and clips, which is a quick way to find an image you just made.
Use the timing and thumbnail to identify the cause
- Immediately after a trophy notification: check Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Auto-Captures > Trophies and review Save Trophy Screenshots.
- A video showing a previous gameplay moment: it is probably the recent-gameplay buffer, which is automatically recorded as video and saved only after you select a span.
- An image on the phone but not newly created on the console: check PlayStation App auto-upload and its 14-day availability window.
- A frame created after pressing the controller: it is a normal Create-menu or shortcut screenshot, not an automatic event.
Media Gallery is also the practical place to confirm whether a capture exists locally before troubleshooting an app transfer. Sony’s viewing guide covers the gallery and Recently created card: view screenshots and clips on PS5.
Troubleshooting: the PS5 keeps making screenshots
You see one after every trophy
Open the trophy auto-capture path and turn off Save Trophy Screenshots, or adjust the trophy-grade choices. Earn another trophy only after checking the setting if you want to verify the change.
You see clips rather than still images
Check whether the item is video. The automatic recent-gameplay feature is expected to buffer video continuously. Save only the sections you need from the Create menu rather than treating the buffer as screenshot activity.
The app keeps showing captures
Separate creation from transfer. A screenshot may have been made manually or by a trophy event and then uploaded because the console is linked to the app and in qualifying Rest Mode. Review the console’s Media Gallery and the app’s upload settings before changing trophy capture.
You cannot find the image you expected
Open Media Gallery and the Recently created card on the PS5. If it was supposed to be a trophy screenshot, confirm that trophy screenshot saving was enabled at the time the trophy was earned. If it was supposed to reach the phone, verify the app link, Rest Mode internet setting, capture format, and the 14-day app availability window.
A simple decision guide
- Did a trophy just unlock? Check the trophy auto-capture setting first.
- Is the file a video? Treat it as saved recent gameplay, not an automatic screenshot.
- Is it only appearing on your phone? Investigate PlayStation App upload; the app does not create the file.
- Did you press Create? It is a manual screenshot or a shortcut configured for the Create button.
- Need to inspect or delete captures? Use Media Gallery and the Recently created card on the console.
The distinction is consistent: trophy events can create still images automatically, recent gameplay is automatically buffered as video, and the app can transfer supported captures that already exist. Ordinary PS5 gameplay does not silently produce screenshots without one of those specific causes.
