Sony reported 9.5 million PS5 hardware units shipped worldwide from October through December 2024, bringing cumulative PS5 shipments to approximately 75 million. That period was calendar Q4 2024, although Sony identifies it as Q3 of fiscal 2024.
The crucial qualification is that Sony reports these figures on a sell-in basis: shipments to retailers and distributors. They are not a verified count of 75 million individual consumer purchases. Sony’s official disclosures are available through its FY2024 Q3 supplemental information and PlayStation business data.
Did the PS5 really pass 75 million units?
Yes—with the terminology tightened. Sony’s reported PS5 shipments reached roughly 75 million worldwide after the holiday quarter ending December 31, 2024. Contemporary coverage commonly described the total as approximately 75.1 million, while Sony’s quarterly figures are rounded to one decimal million.
Using only those rounded quarterly figures produces about 74.9 million through December 2024. That small difference reflects rounding rather than a contradiction. The most accurate wording is therefore approximately 75 million PS5 units shipped.

“Sold” is widely used in games-business headlines, but Sony’s official hardware metric is “Worldwide PlayStation 5 Hardware Unit Sales (Sell-in).” Sell-in measures units entering the retail and distribution channel. Some of those consoles may still be in inventory, so the figure should not be presented as an independently verified retail sell-through total.
Calendar Q4 2024 was Sony’s fiscal Q3
Sony’s fiscal year runs from April 1 through March 31. As a result, the three months that most readers call Q4 2024 were Sony’s fiscal Q3 FY2024.

Therefore, “9.5 million in Q4 2024” is correct when Q4 means the calendar quarter. It is incorrect if it is meant to describe Sony’s fiscal Q4, which ran from January through March 2025.

The PS5 shipment figures behind the milestone

The 9.5-million holiday-quarter figure was approximately 1.3 million higher than the 8.2 million reported for the same quarter a year earlier—a rise of about 15.9% in Sony’s reported sell-in volume. That does not necessarily represent a 15.9% increase in completed consumer purchases.

A stronger holiday quarter, but a weaker full fiscal year
The annual comparison is more complicated than the headline suggests. Sony shipped 20.8 million PS5 units during FY2023 and 18.5 million during FY2024. That is a decline of 2.3 million units, or roughly 11.1%.
In other words, PS5 had a substantially stronger holiday quarter year over year, yet shipped fewer consoles across the complete fiscal year. The contrast is consistent with a platform moving beyond its early supply-constrained period and into a more mature phase, where seasonal promotions and holiday demand remain important but annual hardware growth becomes harder to sustain.

What helped the quarter?
PS5 availability had improved substantially compared with the console’s early years, when supply shortages limited purchases in many markets. Holiday demand, broader retail availability, and promotional activity all formed part of the quarter’s context.
The PS5 Pro also launched in November 2024, within the reported quarter. However, Sony’s cited data does not separate PS5 Pro shipments from standard PS5, Slim, digital-edition, or disc-drive models. The launch may have influenced product mix, premium revenue, or consumer interest, but the available figures do not establish that it materially caused the 9.5-million result.

A large hardware base matters because it creates a wider audience for games, downloadable content, subscriptions, and network services. Sony reported the following PlayStation ecosystem figures for the quarter:

- 129 million monthly active users at the end of the quarter.
The 129-million monthly-active-user figure is not the number of PS5 owners. It measures PlayStation Network engagement across Sony’s platform and cannot be converted directly into an installed-base total.
The broader Games & Network Services business also improved financially. Sony reported FY2024 segment sales of ¥4.670 trillion, up from ¥4.268 trillion in FY2023. Operating income rose from approximately ¥290.2 billion to ¥414.8 billion. Sony attributed the improvement mainly to stronger third-party software sales, network-services revenue, and foreign-exchange effects, while hardware and some first-party software trends were headwinds in parts of the year. Reaching roughly 75 million cumulative shipments by the end of its fifth holiday season confirms that PS5 has become a large global platform. That scale strengthens Sony’s position with third-party publishers and gives live-service games, digital sales, and PlayStation Network services a substantial addressable audience.

It does not, by itself, prove that PS5 was ahead of PS4 at the equivalent point in its lifecycle. Such a claim requires a like-for-like comparison using the same dates, definitions, and sell-in methodology. Nor does the milestone guarantee uninterrupted annual hardware growth: FY2024’s lower total shows that a major installed base and rising platform profitability can coexist with slowing console shipments.
Sony’s public table also does not provide a model-level breakdown, so it cannot show how many units were PS5 Pro systems or how the Slim and digital editions affected the total. Similarly, Sony’s disclosure establishes PS5’s own shipment figure but does not provide a directly comparable current Xbox Series total. Any rival-console comparison would require separately sourced estimates.
The milestone was an intermediate point rather than a final ceiling. Sony Interactive Entertainment later reported more than 95 million cumulative PS5 sell-in units as of June 30, 2026, reinforcing how the platform continued to expand after the 75-million mark.
Bottom line
PS5 did pass approximately 75 million cumulative worldwide shipments after Sony reported 9.5 million units for October–December 2024. The result was a strong holiday-quarter performance, up from 8.2 million in the comparable prior-year quarter.
