A teardown report published on 2 October 2026 describes a revised cooling design in one Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 Slim. It identifies an EDM-051 motherboard and changes to liquid-metal containment and the heatsink, but it does not show that the console runs cooler, quieter, or lasts longer. Sony has not documented these specific changes in the CFI-21XX manual reviewed.
What changed in the reported PS5 Slim revision?
Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reported that console technician and modder Modyfikator89 inspected a Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 Slim and identified an EDM-051 motherboard. The teardown describes a different internal layout, revised liquid-metal containment, a visibly different heatsink construction or material, and a CR2032 CMOS battery that is easier to access. VGC’s 2 October 2026 report attributes those observations to the inspected console; it is not a Sony technical announcement.
Modyfikator89 said, “Compared with the 2025 Slim revision, which had already received the improved cooling system, Sony has changed things again.” That is the technician’s characterization of ongoing component changes, not a measurement showing that this revision performs better.
What the liquid-metal change means
The technician interpreted the area around the APU and die as having protection that exposes less surface directly to liquid metal and appears to keep it more contained. TweakTown described the same apparent barrier in its 2 October 2026 coverage. These are interpretations of components seen in a teardown, not Sony-confirmed specifications or proof of a defect in earlier consoles.

Does the updated PS5 Slim run cooler?
That has not been established by the reporting. The sources reviewed provide no comparable gaming-load temperatures, noise measurements, or long-term reliability results. TweakTown specifically notes that no gaming-load thermal testing was reported. The evidence supports saying the inspected console has a reported cooling-design revision; it does not support claiming that it runs cooler or quieter, fixes overheating, or will last longer.
Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists an operating temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C. That is the stated operating specification, not a test result for this revision or a comparison with earlier Slim consoles. The manual also says, “Design and specifications are subject to change without notice.” It does not mention the EDM-051 board, the reported liquid-metal containment or heatsink changes, or the easier-to-reach battery. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 Instruction Manual therefore neither documents this layout nor disproves the teardown report.

How can you tell whether your PS5 Slim has the revised design?
The inspected unit was a Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition console, but the reporting does not establish a complete model or serial-number range, retail-date cutoff, or regional rollout. It also provides no external marking that lets a buyer verify the EDM-051 motherboard from the box. TweakTown says confirming the board would require checking the motherboard itself. The evidence does not support assuming that a particular region, bundle, or model code includes the revision.
Sony’s CFI-21XX manual identifies CR2032 as the battery type. That specification does not establish that battery access or service compatibility is the same across every PS5 Slim revision.

Should you buy the reported revision or upgrade?
If you already own a PS5 Slim
If your console works properly, the teardown reports offer no evidence-based reason to upgrade for cooling alone. The report describes internal changes, not a demonstrated gameplay or reliability advantage over a working Slim.
If you are buying a PS5 Slim
Treat the reported revision as an interesting internal refinement, not a proven performance benefit. Choose between available consoles based on verifiable details such as disc-drive configuration, the storage specification for the exact model and region, included bundle, price, and availability. Do not pay more on the assumption that a particular box contains the revised board unless Sony or the retailer confirms it.

If you are considering battery access or other servicing
Sony’s manual lists CR2032, but the teardown does not establish that its easier access applies to all Slim models. Sony’s 7 October 2020 teardown post warns that opening a PS5 can invalidate the manufacturer’s guarantee. Do not treat the reported layout as a universal DIY service guide. Sony’s official PS5 teardown also explains that the original console design balanced cooling capacity with noise reduction; it is historical design context, not a statement about the EDM-051 Slim.

Sony’s original PS5 teardown described design trade-offs between cooling and noise. In that 2020 post, Masayasu Ito, then EVP of Hardware Engineering and Operation at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “However, to do so, we had to balance every aspect of the system, from focusing on reducing the noise level to enhancing the cooling capacity, more than ever before.” Sony’s design story later discussed airflow optimization and the large cooling fan in the original console.
