Current PS5 Slim models and prices
“PS5 Slim” is the common name for Sony’s smaller PS5 model groups. Sony’s retail pages generally call them PS5 Console and PS5 Digital Edition, with model groups such as CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. It is a hardware revision and smaller enclosure, not a separate generation with a new class of games.

Sony Direct: the safest starting point
Sony Direct’s PS5 hub separates new, certified-refurbished, Disc, and Digital products. It is the easiest place to confirm whether you are buying a complete console rather than a standalone accessory or a marketplace bundle.

Best Buy: useful, but check the seller
Best Buy’s Digital listing and Disc listing can be useful for shipping, store pickup, and retailer returns. However, the pages can also show third-party marketplace offers. Confirm the “sold and shipped by” line before ordering; the first displayed price may not be Best Buy’s own inventory.
Walmart and other retailers
Walmart’s PS5 category includes marketplace sellers, accessory bundles, imported units, and listings with nonstandard storage claims. Use it only after checking the seller, warranty, return policy, region, and complete contents. The research does not verify live stock or prices at Amazon, Target, Costco, or GameStop, so check those pages directly rather than relying on a generic “in stock” claim.

Disc or Digital: which PS5 Slim should you buy?

The current new-console price gap is only $50 on Sony Direct. That makes the Disc Edition the better default for most undecided buyers: physical games can be cheaper on the used market, and you avoid buying a drive later. The Digital Edition makes sense when you are certain you will remain digital-only and the lower price matters.
The Digital model can later accept a compatible disc drive, but calculate the complete console-plus-drive cost before assuming it is a bargain. Sony identifies the current Digital product as the CFI-2100 slim model group and says it is compatible with accessories made for CFI-2000 products, including compatible disc drives. That is accessory compatibility, not evidence of a major performance upgrade.
Storage: 825GB, 1TB, and misleading “2TB” listings
Sony Direct currently lists its new Digital Edition as 825GB, while Best Buy shows a 1TB Digital listing. Sony’s Disc listing is labeled 1TB. Do not assume every Digital or slim console has the same capacity: check the exact product page, box, and model number.
Usable space is lower than the advertised capacity because system software and other functions reserve part of the SSD. A “2TB PS5” or “2.8TB PS5” is usually a retailer-specific bundle, aftermarket SSD upgrade, or modified unit unless Sony’s own page confirms that configuration. Ask what storage is actually included and who installed it.
What comes in the box?
Sony’s Digital Edition listing includes the console, one DualSense wireless controller, an 825GB SSD, horizontal feet, HDMI cable, AC power cord, USB cable, user manual, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.
The Disc Edition includes the console’s built-in disc drive and one DualSense controller. For both models, a vertical stand is sold separately. The Digital Edition also needs a separately sold compatible disc drive if you later want physical media. Product photography showing a console upright does not mean the stand is included.

How to avoid a bad PS5 listing
- Confirm the model: make sure it is a complete Disc or Digital console, not a drive, cover, stand, or controller.
- Confirm condition: distinguish new, certified refurbished, open-box, used, and “renewed.”
- Check the seller: on marketplace pages, verify who sells and ships the unit.
- Check storage: match the advertised capacity to the product page and model information.
- Question unusual bundles: extra controllers, chargers, cables, or “2TB” claims may be aftermarket additions.
- Check region and warranty: imported consoles and used units may have different support or return terms.
- Compare the checkout total: include shipping, taxes, financing costs, and required accessories.
Is a refurbished PS5 Slim worth buying?
Sony-certified refurbished models are the most credible lower-cost option identified here: $499 for Digital and $549 for Disc when checked on August 18, 2026. They are not factory-new, and availability, warranty coverage, and return terms must be confirmed on the individual product page.
The refurbished Disc model is particularly compelling if it is available and you want physical media: it is $100 below Sony’s listed new Disc price. Prefer new if you specifically want factory-new packaging, the newest listed revision, or the price difference is too small to justify accepting refurbished hardware.
Accessories worth budgeting for
- Vertical stand: optional; use the included horizontal feet if you do not need vertical placement.
- Disc drive: relevant only if you buy the Digital Edition and may later use discs.
- Additional DualSense controller: useful for local multiplayer.
- Compatible M.2 SSD: useful if you install many large games, but check current compatibility and pricing separately.
Online multiplayer may require a paid PlayStation Plus plan under Sony’s terms. Plan pricing is not included here because it was not verified alongside the console prices.
Bottom line
For most buyers, the new PS5 Disc Edition is the best all-purpose choice because the $50 premium buys physical-game, used-game, resale, and Blu-ray flexibility. Choose the Digital Edition only when you are confident you will buy digitally. If price matters most, check Sony’s certified-refurbished slim consoles before considering an unknown marketplace listing.
