PS5 CPU: eight Zen 2 cores
The original PS5 CPU is an x86-64 AMD Ryzen processor based on Zen 2. It has eight cores, 16 threads, and a variable frequency of up to 3.5GHz. “Up to” matters: 3.5GHz is not a promise that the processor operates at a permanently fixed clock in every situation.
The CPU runs game logic, physics, artificial intelligence, world simulation, operating-system tasks, and work that prepares frames for the GPU. Compared with the Jaguar-based CPU in the PS4 generation, the Zen 2 design gives developers substantially more processing headroom for denser worlds, more complex simulation, and higher frame-rate targets.

The CPU is integrated into the PS5’s custom AMD system-on-chip rather than being a replaceable desktop-style component. PS5 Pro’s major advertised advances are graphics-focused; it should not be described as a completely new CPU generation.
PS5 GPU: 10.3 teraflops with ray tracing
Sony describes the launch PS5 graphics engine as AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based, with hardware ray-tracing acceleration and a variable frequency of up to 2.23GHz. Its quoted theoretical peak is 10.3 teraflops.
The GPU renders geometry, textures, lighting, effects, and frames. Hardware ray tracing can produce more realistic reflections, shadows, and refraction, but it is computationally expensive and must be implemented by each game. A title may therefore offer separate Fidelity or Quality and Performance modes: one may prioritize resolution, detail, and ray tracing while the other targets a higher frame rate.
Teraflops are a theoretical compute measurement, not a frame-rate guarantee. Architecture, memory access, game-engine design, resolution, ray-tracing settings, and optimization all affect the result, so teraflops should not be used as the sole basis for comparing consoles or PC graphics cards.

Sony explains the launch PS5’s ray-tracing and graphics capabilities in its technical hardware overview.
16GB of shared GDDR6 memory
The PS5 has 16GB of GDDR6 memory with 448GB/s of bandwidth. Capacity and bandwidth describe different things:
- Capacity: how much data the system can keep in memory.
- Bandwidth: how quickly the processor can move data to and from that memory.
Memory stores textures, geometry, frame data, game code, and other assets. The 16GB is shared by the system and games, so it should not be treated as 16GB freely available to the GPU. Because every PS5 targets a fixed hardware configuration, developers can plan around a more predictable memory budget than they can across the many configurations of the PC market.
PS5 SSD: 825GB and 5.5GB/s raw read speed
The launch PS5’s custom SSD has an advertised capacity of 825GB and a raw sequential-read bandwidth of 5.5GB/s. Sony designed it alongside a custom I/O system to stream game assets rapidly and reduce traditional loading barriers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That does not mean every game loads instantly or at the same speed. Actual loading depends on the game engine, scene complexity, patches, asset design, and how effectively the developer uses the hardware. PS5-native games generally benefit more from the platform’s fast storage pipeline than backward-compatible PS4 software.
Advertised capacity is also not usable capacity. The system reserves part of the drive for software and console functions, so the space available for games is lower and can vary. Sony’s current PS5 product page warns that available capacity may differ.
Current storage listings
Sony’s US listings currently identify the models this way:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
| Model | Listed internal storage |
|---|---|
| PS5 Console, disc model | 1TB SSD |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB SSD |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB SSD |
Therefore, “the PS5 has an 825GB SSD” is accurate for the launch machine and the current Digital Edition listing, but not as a universal description of the entire PS5 range.
PS5 Slim: same core experience, smaller design
The PS5 Slim, associated with the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups, retains the same broad PS5 experience in a smaller chassis. Sony says the redesign reduces volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% or 24%, depending on the comparison.
The current US disc-equipped Slim is listed with 1TB of storage. The current Slim Digital Edition is listed with 825GB. The Digital Edition has no built-in optical drive, but compatible CFI-2000/2100 models can accept Sony’s separately sold removable disc drive. Internet access is required to pair that drive during setup.
Do not assume the launch Digital Edition and Slim Digital Edition have identical storage or physical specifications. The model group matters.
PS5 Pro: what changes?
PS5 Pro is not merely a cosmetic revision or a simple clock-speed increase. Sony positions it as a separate performance tier with:
- Advanced ray tracing
- AI-assisted PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR
- Higher performance targets in supported games
- 2TB of built-in storage
- Wi-Fi 7 compatibility
- Game-specific PS5 Pro enhancements
PSSR is intended to reconstruct a sharper image from a lower internal rendering workload, while advanced ray tracing enables more demanding lighting effects in supported software. The benefit is game-dependent: not every title receives the same enhancement, and PS5 Pro does not automatically transform every game into a higher-quality version.
Sony’s current US Direct listing showed PS5 Pro at $899 when checked on August 18, 2026. That is a dated US price signal, not a guaranteed current price; taxes, bundles, stock, promotions, and region can change the amount. See the official PS5 Pro feature page and Sony Direct listings for current availability.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Video output: 4K, 120Hz, VRR, and 8K
The PS5 supports 4K output and, with a compatible display and game, high-refresh-rate modes up to 120Hz. It also supports HDR and variable refresh rate on compatible equipment and software. These are output capabilities, not guarantees that every game renders natively at 4K or runs at 120 frames per second.
To use 120Hz, the display must support it and the game must offer a 120Hz mode. VRR dynamically adjusts the display refresh rate to the game’s frame timing, but it also requires compatible hardware and software. HDMI cable quality, the television’s HDMI port, and selected console settings can affect which modes are available.

Some sharing, broadcasting, Remote Play, and VR features are restricted in that mode. See Sony’s resolution and display guide.
Audio: Tempest 3D AudioTech
PS5 uses Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech. In supported games, it can create positional audio through compatible headphones or TV speakers, with setup required for some configurations.
You do not need an expensive surround-speaker system. Compatible stereo headphones can provide the effect, although the result depends on the game, audio device, and console settings. Tempest 3D AudioTech is a platform feature; it does not define the physical audio capabilities of a particular television, soundbar, or AV receiver.

Choose the disc model if you buy used games, own PS4 or PS5 discs, lend or resell games, collect physical releases, or want 4K Blu-ray playback. Choose the Digital Edition if you buy exclusively through PlayStation Store and do not need physical media. A Digital Edition cannot use disc-based games without a compatible add-on drive.
PS5 Pro is the model Sony specifically lists with Wi-Fi 7 compatibility. That should not automatically be attributed to every standard PS5 or Slim model.
Can you expand PS5 storage?
Yes. PS5 supports an internal M.2 expansion SSD, but an ordinary M.2 drive is not sufficient. Sony’s requirements are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface
- M key
- Capacity from 250GB to 8TB
- Supported lengths of 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110mm
- Form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110
- Maximum width of 25mm including the cooling structure
- Maximum total thickness of 11.25mm
- Recommended sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s
- A heatsink or other effective heat-dissipation mechanism
M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. Check the dimensions of the drive and heatsink together, not just the bare drive. Sony also states that the PS5 does not support Host Memory Buffer, so some HMB-dependent SSD designs may perform below expectations.
After installation, the console must format the drive, which erases its data. PS5 games can be installed and played directly from compatible M.2 storage. Sony cautions that meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee performance identical to the built-in SSD. Follow the current M.2 installation and compatibility guide.
M.2 versus USB extended storage
USB extended storage is useful for archiving games, but it has a different role:
- PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage but must be copied to the internal SSD or M.2 SSD before they can be played.
- Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
- If a PS5 game behaves incorrectly from an M.2 drive, Sony recommends moving it to the internal console storage.
Backward compatibility
Sony says PS5 consoles can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, although its product page notes that some PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro. Compatibility is not the same as having a native PS5 version: some games receive Game Boost or other improvements, while others run as their original PS4 software.
Recommended Free Tools
PS4 disc upgrades and disc-based games require a disc-equipped PS5. Digital Edition owners cannot use PS4 game discs. For unusual or excluded titles, check Sony’s official compatibility information before buying.
Which PS5 is right for you?
- Standard disc PS5: Best for physical-game buyers, used-game shoppers, PS4 disc owners, collectors, and 4K Blu-ray viewers.
- PS5 Digital Edition: Best for buyers who purchase exclusively online and are comfortable downloading large games. The current listing has 825GB, so storage planning matters.
- PS5 Slim: Best when you want the standard PS5 experience in a smaller chassis. Choose disc or Digital Edition according to your media habits.
- PS5 Pro: Best for enthusiasts with a capable 4K/120Hz display who value enhanced ray tracing, PSSR, and supported-game improvements. Its premium is harder to justify with a basic 1080p/60Hz display or games without Pro enhancements.
For image quality, prioritize the GPU, ray-tracing implementation, game modes, display quality, and whether a title supports PS5 Pro enhancements—not teraflops alone. For storage, compare usable capacity, your digital library, and the cost of a compatible M.2 SSD. For loading, remember that SSD speed is only one part of the result; the game engine determines how the hardware is used.
