The original CFI-1000 PS5 has a front USB-A Hi-Speed port, a front USB-C SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps port, and two rear USB-A SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps ports. The CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 PS5 Pro families replace the front USB-A port with USB-C, while keeping one front Hi-Speed port, one front SuperSpeed port, and two rear SuperSpeed USB-A ports. For storage, PS VR2 and the HD Camera, use a SuperSpeed port—not simply any USB-C port.
PS5 USB ports at a glance
| PS5 model group | Front ports | Rear ports | High-speed ports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original CFI-1000 | USB-A Hi-Speed; USB-C SuperSpeed 10Gbps | Two USB-A SuperSpeed 10Gbps | Front USB-C and both rear USB-A ports |
| CFI-2000 Slim | USB-C Hi-Speed; USB-C SuperSpeed 10Gbps | Two USB-A SuperSpeed 10Gbps | Front SuperSpeed USB-C and both rear USB-A ports |
| CFI-7000 PS5 Pro family | USB-C Hi-Speed; USB-C SuperSpeed 10Gbps | Two USB-A SuperSpeed 10Gbps | Front SuperSpeed USB-C and both rear USB-A ports |
Check the CFI model number on the console or its packaging rather than relying only on “disc,” “digital,” “Slim” or “Pro” branding. Disc and digital editions within a generation can share the same USB arrangement, while the Slim and Pro redesigns change the front connectors. See Sony’s USB-port guide for the current layout.

Hi-Speed versus SuperSpeed USB
“USB-C” describes the connector’s shape, not its performance. Hi-Speed USB is USB 2.0-class connectivity. SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps is the faster USB 3.x-class connection Sony specifies for demanding accessories and USB extended storage.
This distinction matters most on Slim and Pro consoles: the two front USB-C ports look almost identical, but one is Hi-Speed and the other is SuperSpeed. Conversely, both rear USB-A ports on the model groups above are SuperSpeed. A USB 10Gbps rating is an interface ceiling, not a promise of 10Gbps real-world transfers. The drive, cable, enclosure controller, temperature, workload and console overhead all affect actual performance.

Which PS5 port should you use?
| Device or task | Recommended connection | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | Any SuperSpeed port | Connect directly; do not use a hub |
| PS VR2 | Front SuperSpeed USB-C | Do not use the similar-looking front Hi-Speed USB-C port on Slim or Pro |
| HD Camera | Any SuperSpeed port | Older PlayStation Camera requires its adapter |
| Wireless headset adapter | Compatible USB-A or USB-C port | Use an adapter or extension cable when required |
| DualSense charging | Any suitable USB port | Rest Mode power depends on the console setting |
| Keyboard, mouse, microphone or specialist peripheral | A compatible USB port | Physical connection does not guarantee PS5 support |
External drives
Use a SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps port: the front SuperSpeed USB-C port or either rear USB-A port. Sony does not recommend using the front Hi-Speed port for USB extended storage.
PS VR2
Connect PS VR2 to the front SuperSpeed USB-C port. On Slim and Pro models, this is especially important because both front connectors are USB-C but only one provides the required speed.
Cameras
The HD Camera should use a SuperSpeed port. The older PlayStation Camera requires the appropriate PlayStation Camera adapter. Do not assume that every front port is equivalent on a Slim or Pro console. Sony’s port guide identifies the supported connection.
Headset adapters
Wireless headset adapters may use USB-A, USB-C or an included adapter depending on the product. Sony’s PULSE Elite instructions specify a USB Type-A port for its PlayStation Link adapter. A Slim console may require a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter if you want to use a front USB-C port.
If wireless audio is unreliable, move the adapter to another port or use a short USB extension cable. Separating it from an external drive and other USB 3.x equipment can reduce interference. Sony recommends this approach in its accessories troubleshooting guidance.
Controllers and other peripherals
PS5 USB ports can charge a DualSense controller. If charging stops in Rest Mode, check the USB-power duration under the PS5’s power-saving settings. Charging and data communication are separate concerns, so use a known-good cable with both power and data conductors when the controller must communicate with the console.
Keyboards, mice, microphones, capture-related accessories, racing wheels, flight controls and USB audio devices are compatibility-dependent. A device can fit the port and still lack PS5 support, require its own power supply or need a proprietary adapter. A capture card normally receives the PS5’s HDMI output and connects by USB to the computer doing the capture; it is not generally a USB display device for the console. Sony’s safety documentation does not guarantee usability for every connected device.

USB extended storage: what it can and cannot do
USB storage is useful for expanding capacity, archiving PS5 games and running PS4 games. It is not a replacement for the PS5’s internal SSD when it comes to playing PS5 games.
- PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage but must be copied to console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before they can be played.
- PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
- Stored games can be moved back without downloading them again.
- A faster external drive may reduce transfer waits, but it does not turn USB storage into internal PS5 storage.
Sony’s requirements are a USB 3.0-or-later drive with at least 250GB and no more than 8TB. The drive must connect directly to a SuperSpeed USB port. USB extended storage cannot be connected through a hub, and only one extended-storage drive can be used at a time. See the official extended-storage guide and storage requirements.

How to format a drive as PS5 extended storage
Formatting erases everything on the drive. Copy important files elsewhere before beginning.
- Connect a compatible USB 3.0-or-later drive directly to a SuperSpeed USB port.
- Open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Select USB Extended Storage.
- Choose Format as USB Extended Storage.
- If more than one USB drive is attached, choose Select Another USB Drive first.
Do not switch off the console or unplug the drive while formatting. An interruption can cause data loss, corruption or damage to the drive or console.

Move games to USB storage
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game or app.
- Press the Options button.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the items and select Move.
If an internal M.2 SSD is installed as well, the interface may show separate tabs for content that can be moved to USB storage.
Copy a PS5 game back to playable storage
- Open Game Library.
- Find the game stored on USB extended storage.
- Highlight it and press Options.
- Select Copy.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before launching the game.
PS4 games may be played directly from the USB drive, so they do not need this copy-back step.
Safely disconnect the drive
When the console is on, go to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5. Disconnect the drive only after the console confirms it is safe. Alternatively, shut the PS5 down completely and wait until the power indicator is off.
Never unplug an active drive while a game is being installed, updated, moved or accessed. Unsafe removal can corrupt data.

| Option | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| External USB HDD | Large, inexpensive PS4 library and PS5 game archive | Slower transfers; mechanical drives can be noisier and less resistant to shock |
| External USB SSD | Faster transfers, quiet operation and portable PS4 storage | More expensive per terabyte; still cannot run PS5 games directly |
| Internal M.2 SSD | Additional storage from which PS5 games can run directly | Requires installation, a compatible drive and suitable cooling |
| Delete and redownload | Small libraries or fast internet connections | Uses bandwidth and time |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Saved-data continuity and console transitions | Not a substitute for game storage |
Choose an external HDD if capacity per dollar matters most. Choose an external SSD if you frequently move games or want faster, quieter USB storage. Choose an internal M.2 SSD if your priority is directly playable PS5 expansion. Check Sony’s current M.2 requirements before buying; official licensing can provide reassurance, but it is not the same thing as a universal technical requirement.
Hubs, adapters and cables
Do not use a USB hub for PS5 extended storage. Sony explicitly requires the drive to connect directly, and a hub can cause detection failures, insufficient-speed messages or disconnects under load.
A hub may be convenient for ordinary peripherals, but it is not guaranteed to support every combination of devices. Several power-hungry accessories can compete for available power, and high-speed devices can create a poor environment for some wireless adapters. For a headset dongle, a short extension cable is often more useful than a hub.

USB-C does not guarantee high-speed data. A cable may be charge-only, USB 2.0, USB 3.x, damaged or unsuitable for the accessory. Use the cable supplied with PS VR2 or the drive when possible, or buy one explicitly rated for the required data function. A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter changes the connector, not necessarily the performance or compatibility of the device.

Backups are different from extended storage
A drive used for PS5 USB extended storage is not automatically a backup drive. For a console backup, Sony supports compatible USB drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. A drive formatted as PS5 extended storage must be reformatted before it can be used for this purpose, and reformatting erases its game contents.
To create a console backup, use:
- Settings > System
- System Software
- Back Up and Restore
- Back Up Your PS5
Choose the content to back up and select Back Up. Sony’s backup process can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips and settings, subject to its stated limitations. Restoring a backup erases current console data, so verify that the backup is usable before relying on it. See Sony’s backup and restore guide.
PS5 USB troubleshooting
The drive is not detected
- Stop active transfers and safely remove the drive if the console still recognizes it.
- Connect it directly to a SuperSpeed port.
- Try another SuperSpeed port.
- Try a different, known-good data cable.
- Check that the drive is between 250GB and 8TB and meets Sony’s compatibility requirements.
- Update PS5 system software.
- Test the drive on another compatible device before considering a reformat.
Common causes include using the front Hi-Speed port, a hub, an unsuitable format, a damaged cable, inadequate power or a drive that was disconnected improperly. Back up important files before reformatting.
Transfers are slower than expected
A 10Gbps port does not guarantee 10Gbps performance. An HDD, slow enclosure controller, damaged cable, high temperature, simultaneous activity or the game’s file structure may be the limiting factor. Moving from a hard drive to an external SSD can reduce waits, but performance remains dependent on the complete setup.
The drive disconnects
Check the cable, direct connection and power requirements. Avoid unplugging the drive during Rest Mode transitions or active transfers. Use Safely Remove from PS5 before disconnecting, and test another SuperSpeed port if the problem persists.
The headset keeps dropping out
Move the wireless adapter, use a short extension cable, separate it from external USB 3.x storage and temporarily disconnect other high-speed USB devices. Then update the headset and PS5 software. If the issue remains, check whether the adapter and headset are officially compatible.
PS VR2 reports a connection problem
On Slim and Pro models, verify that the headset is connected to the front SuperSpeed USB-C port rather than the adjacent Hi-Speed port. Use the supplied or correctly rated cable and remove hubs or questionable adapters from the connection.
The controller will not charge
Try another port and cable, confirm that the cable carries power, and check the Rest Mode USB-power setting. A port that powers one accessory is not necessarily proof that another accessory is fully compatible.
