Choose by the games you want and where you plan to play: PS5 is a home console, while Nintendo’s Switch family can go between handheld and TV play on dockable models. If you mean the newest Nintendo system, compare PS5 with Switch 2; the original Switch, Switch OLED, and handheld-only Switch Lite are different options.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a short list of the specific games you most want, then check each title’s current listing on the relevant platform. Nintendo highlights franchises such as Mario and Zelda on its Switch family page; Sony’s PS5 page is the place to check PlayStation games and system details. A game’s availability should be confirmed title by title rather than assumed from the console brand.
Choose how you want to play
PS5 is for a home-console setup
Choose PS5 if you expect to play primarily on a TV at home and the games you want are available on PlayStation. Sony’s official product information describes PS5 and PS5 Pro as console options; it does not provide equivalent built-in portable-console specifications to compare with Switch.
Switch 2 can move between handheld and TV play
Switch 2 is a hybrid console: use it as a handheld or connect it to a TV. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch 1920 × 1080 LCD screen, 256 GB of UFS storage, Wi-Fi 6, and estimated battery life of 2–6.5 hours depending on the game. In TV mode, it supports output up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps; Nintendo also lists 120 fps support at lower resolutions. Those TV-output figures describe supported modes, not a like-for-like measure of image quality against PS5.

The original Switch models offer different ways to play
Standard Switch and Switch OLED support TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. The standard model has a 6.2-inch LCD; the OLED model has a 7-inch OLED display. Switch Lite is designed for handheld play and does not have the family’s TV mode. Nintendo’s model comparison explains the differences.
Know which Nintendo Switch you mean
“Nintendo Switch” can mean the original system family or the newer Switch 2. They are not interchangeable labels when comparing prices, features, or game compatibility.

Check game compatibility before choosing a Switch model
A compatible game card does not guarantee that every game or feature works on every Switch system. Switch OLED supports the full Switch game library, subject to a Labo design caveat and possible differences in experience. Switch Lite plays games that support handheld mode; some titles may need separately sold controllers. For a specific game, check its packaging or the eShop compatibility indicators. Nintendo summarizes these qualifications in its Switch model comparison.
Nintendo says Switch 2 accepts both Switch 2 and Switch game cards, but that fact alone does not establish compatibility for every title or feature. Check the game’s current listing before buying.

Work out the total cost, not just the console price
Before deciding, add the console edition and the games you plan to buy. Include any subscription if you want online features, plus extra controllers or storage if your intended games and play habits call for them. For multiplayer, Nintendo notes that additional Joy-Con or Pro controllers may be needed for some modes. Check compatibility and current product details for any controller, carrying case, screen protector, or storage accessory before purchasing.
Which should you buy?
- Choose PS5 if your priority is a home-console setup and its current game catalog has the titles you want.
- Choose Switch 2 if you want one system that can move between handheld play and the TV, and its games fit your preferences and budget.
- Choose an original Switch model if its games and form factor suit you; pick standard Switch or OLED for TV play, or Lite if you want handheld-only play and have checked your games’ handheld support.
There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on desired games, play location, model, and the full cost of your setup.
