There is no one best console for every player. Choose first by whether you need discs, then by the games and friends you want to play with, the performance target and storage capacity you need, and the current price of the exact configuration in your region. PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S are both digital-only out of the box, but Series S is also a different performance and storage tier from Series X—not just the same console without a disc drive.

Quick comparison: what changes between the four choices?

Console configuration Disc access Storage listed on US manufacturer pages Manufacturer’s display positioning
PS5 console Disc drive 1 TB Supports 4K and up to 120 fps/120 Hz output in supported circumstances
PS5 Digital Edition No drive included; a separately sold drive is compatible only with specified slim model groups 825 GB Supports 4K and up to 120 fps/120 Hz output in supported circumstances
Xbox Series X Depends on configuration: US listings include disc-drive and all-digital models 1 TB or 2 TB, depending on configuration Designed for native 4K; up to 120 FPS with supported content and a compatible display
Xbox Series S Digital-only 512 GB or 1 TB, depending on configuration Designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling; up to 120 FPS with supported content and a compatible display

These are manufacturer-listed capacities and capability targets, not promises of usable free storage or the output every game will achieve. Installed games and system-reserved space affect available storage; game performance depends on the title, settings and display.

Which console should you buy?

  • Choose a disc-equipped PS5 if you want PlayStation games and features and need access to physical games or supported video discs.
  • Choose a PS5 Digital Edition if you are committed to PlayStation’s digital storefront and the listed storage suits you. If disc flexibility matters, check the exact model: Sony’s add-on drive is for specified slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups, not every Digital Edition revision.
  • Choose a disc-equipped Xbox Series X if you want the Xbox ecosystem, a native-4K target and physical-disc access. Confirm the configuration: Microsoft’s US listings also include an all-digital Series X.
  • Choose Xbox Series S if you want an all-digital Xbox and prioritize its lower-tier 1440p/upscaled-4K design over Series X’s native-4K positioning. Decide between its listed 512 GB and 1 TB versions based on your storage needs.
  • Still undecided? Start with the specific games you own or plan to play and where your friends play. Then compare the same disc/storage configuration and any extra storage or controllers at current local prices.

Do you need a disc drive?

A disc drive matters if you want to play compatible physical games, use discs you already own, lend or borrow supported games, or play supported movie discs. A disc-free console relies on digital purchases and downloads; owning a boxed game does not help if the console cannot read its disc.

PS5: disc model or Digital Edition

Sony’s US product pages list a 1 TB disc-equipped PS5 and an 825 GB PS5 Digital Edition. Sony says a separately sold add-on drive can be paired with PS5 Digital Edition slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups; setup requires an internet connection. Verify the console’s model group before buying a drive, since this compatibility is not stated for every Digital Edition revision. Sony’s direct listing says the 1 TB console includes one DualSense controller and two horizontal feet; the vertical stand is sold separately. See Sony’s PS5 product page and 1 TB PS5 store listing for model and included-item details.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Sony’s US pages also state that newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase in digital format only from January 2028. That changes how new games can be bought; it does not mean existing game discs stop working. Sony says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on a disc-equipped console.

Xbox: check the Series X configuration

Series X is not synonymous with a disc drive. Microsoft’s US listings include a 1 TB Carbon Black disc-drive model, a 1 TB all-digital Robot White model and a 2 TB Galaxy Black disc-drive model, as well as a limited edition. Series S is digital-only. If physical Xbox games or discs matter, confirm that the exact Series X listing has a drive before purchase. Microsoft’s Series X product page lists its configurations; its Series S page lists digital-only options.

How do performance and display targets compare?

Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K and Series S for 1440p with 4K upscaling. Both Xbox product families advertise up to 120 FPS, subject to supported games and a compatible display. Sony lists PS5 support for 4K and up to 120 fps with 120 Hz output. These are capability ceilings and design positions, not a guarantee that every game renders at those resolutions or reaches that frame rate.

For a 4K television, Series X is the Xbox model positioned for native 4K; Series S can output an upscaled 4K signal from its 1440p design target. For any console, check the particular game’s supported resolution and frame-rate options if those determine your purchase. A compatible screen is also needed to use high-refresh output.

How much storage do the models offer?

The listed capacities differ by configuration, and nominal capacity is not the same as free space after system software and game installations.

  • PS5: Sony lists 1 TB for its disc console and 825 GB for Digital Edition.
  • Series X: Microsoft’s US listings include 1 TB and 2 TB models; the disc-drive status varies by configuration.
  • Series S: Microsoft’s US listings include 512 GB and 1 TB all-digital models.

Microsoft identifies a dedicated Series X|S Storage Expansion Card port and says the card adds storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. Check the card’s exact compatibility and capacity before purchase. For any system, compare the cost of the particular capacity you want rather than assuming all versions of a console have equal storage.

What about games, backward compatibility and friends?

Start with the games you actually want to play, including titles you already own and multiplayer games your friends use. A broad backward-compatibility statement does not establish that every older game works.

  • PS5: Sony says the console plays over 8,500 PS4 games, and Game Boost increases frame rates in select PS4 games. Confirm compatibility for a specific title, especially if you depend on a particular older game.
  • Xbox: Microsoft describes support for thousands of games across four generations and says Xbox One accessories work with the consoles. Check the exact game and accessory rather than treating this as a guarantee for every item.

Console choice also determines which platform’s game library, friends list and online ecosystem you use. If a particular game or group of friends is the deciding factor, verify the game’s platform availability and multiplayer arrangements before comparing hardware features.

Which platform features and controller suit you?

Sony promotes DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported games. Microsoft highlights Quick Resume and Smart Delivery, and lists Xbox One accessory compatibility. These features may matter more than small differences in headline specifications if you prefer one controller feel or rely on a particular accessory. Feature support varies by game; local multiplayer also depends on whether the specific title supports it.

How should you compare total cost?

Prices and availability vary by retailer and can change, so there is no reliable universal price winner in these manufacturer listings. Compare current prices in your region for the exact capacity and disc configuration you want. Include any compatible add-on drive or storage card, another controller if needed, and the cost of games or subscriptions you plan to use. Subscription catalogs and benefits change, so check the current terms and available games rather than assuming a service makes one console cheaper.

Sony’s direct US store listing does not provide a stable current price in the captured product information and directs buyers to retailers. Microsoft’s US pages likewise warn that retailer pricing and availability can vary. Treat prices as a live local comparison, not a fixed launch-price contest.
