Blizzard revealed Freja as a Damage hero coming in Season 16 and teased Aqua, a Chinese hero with water-based abilities, for Season 18. Freja did arrive in Season 16. In Season 18, Blizzard introduced Wuyang, an aquatic Support hero—strongly suggesting he was the hero first teased as Aqua, although the official articles cited here do not explicitly say Aqua was renamed Wuyang.
Who is Freja in Overwatch 2?
Blizzard described Freja as a former search-and-rescue operative turned bounty hunter. Her gameplay is built around precision crossbow attacks, explosive damage and mobility. Blizzard first announced her for Season 16, with a free trial weekend planned ahead of her full release; its Season 16 announcement later confirmed that she went live at the season launch.
Freja’s abilities and playstyle
- Revdraw Crossbow: Rapid bolts form the basis of her attacks.
- Take Aim: Fires a high-speed explosive bolt, rewarding accurate shots.
- Quick Dash: A directional dash that reloads her weapon and can help her escape or reposition.
- Updraft: Gives Freja vertical mobility for repositioning or setting up an attack.
- Bola Shot: Entangles targets and creates openings for team combos.
In practical terms, Freja is an aim-focused Damage hero who can use movement to pursue targets, change position and set up opportunities for teammates.
What was Aqua, and what happened to the hero?
In its 2025 Spotlight, Blizzard called Aqua the current codename for Hero 44. It described the planned character as Chinese, with water-based abilities intended to manipulate the battlefield, and said more details would arrive ahead of a Season 18 release.

When Season 18 arrived, Blizzard introduced Wuyang, an aquatic Support hero from Wuxing University’s Water College. Its Season 18 midcycle recap later said the season had started by dropping the new Support hero Wuyang. That sequence makes Wuyang the strongly supported match for the earlier Aqua tease, but the cited official sources do not explicitly state that Aqua was renamed Wuyang.
Wuyang’s water-based Support kit
- Xuanwu Staff: Launches guided water orbs.
- Guardian Wave: Knocks enemies back while boosting ally healing.
- Restorative Stream: Provides adaptive healing over time.
- Rushing Torrent: Enables quick movement.
- Tidal Blast: Grants overhealth to a selected ally or Wuyang, then sends out a knockback wave.
Freja and Wuyang serve different team roles
| Hero | Role | Core style | Mobility and team impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freja | Damage | Precision crossbow attacks, including an explosive bolt | Quick Dash and Updraft support repositioning, pursuit and setup; Bola Shot entangles targets for team combos. |
| Wuyang | Support | Guided water-orb attacks alongside healing and battlefield disruption | Rushing Torrent provides movement; his abilities heal or protect allies, while Guardian Wave and Tidal Blast can knock enemies back. |
They are not direct alternatives: Freja’s kit is centered on dealing damage and creating openings, while Wuyang’s combines support, healing and disruption.
