PS5 vs. PS5 Pro: Which Console Has Better Graphics on Your TV?

PS5 Pro has stronger graphics features in compatible games, but what you see depends on the game mode and your TV’s resolution and refresh rate.

PS5 Pro offers the stronger graphics features in games specifically enhanced for it. Sony says those games can use AI-assisted PSSR upscaling, more advanced ray tracing, and higher or steadier frame rates. What you see depends on the game’s Pro update, its graphics mode, and your TV: a 4K set is relevant to 4K output, while a 120Hz display matters only for modes that support higher refresh rates.

How PS5 Pro changes graphics compared with PS5

The standard PS5 and PS5 Pro can present different graphics modes in the same game. Pro enhancements give developers more room to balance detail, ray tracing, resolution, and frame rate, but Sony’s features are compatibility-dependent rather than a universal upgrade to every PS5 game.

Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement says PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5, and claims up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are manufacturer-stated hardware comparisons and a rendering claim, not a measured promise of a particular percentage improvement in image quality for every game. See Sony’s announcement and hardware figures.

Sharper-looking output with PSSR

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-assisted upscaling feature for compatible PS5 Pro games. A game can render internally below 4K and use PSSR to produce a 4K output image. That can help developers pursue both visual detail and performance, but “4K” output does not necessarily mean the game renders every frame natively at 4K.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

More advanced ray tracing

Sony says PS5 Pro supports more advanced ray tracing, including more realistic reflections and shadows in compatible games. The effect is title-specific: a developer decides whether and how to use the additional capability, and the resulting improvement may differ from one game to another.

Higher or more consistent frame rates

For supported games, Pro modes can aim for higher frame rates or maintain a smoother rate while improving image quality. Sony says compatible titles can combine ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K output with 60 fps, or up to 120 fps when the game and display support it. This is not a claim that every Pro-enhanced game runs at 120 fps.

What Sony’s game examples show

Sony’s examples illustrate why there is no single graphics uplift that applies to every title. Developers can spend the Pro’s extra capability differently: one may target a sharper image at 60 fps, while another may bring a quality-oriented presentation to a faster frame rate.

Game example Sony’s described PS5 Pro mode What it illustrates
The Last of Us Part I Remastered Renders at 1440p, then uses PSSR to upscale to 4K, with a 60 fps target. 4K output can be upscaled from a lower internal rendering resolution to balance image quality and frame rate.
Horizon Forbidden West Sony says visual quality matches or surpasses the standard PS5 Quality mode while targeting 60 fps. A Pro mode can aim to combine quality-mode visuals with a higher frame rate in a named, supported game.

These are Sony’s examples for specific games, not controlled comparisons across a representative set of titles or guarantees for other games. Details are on Sony’s PS5 Pro product page.

Does PS5 Pro look better on a 4K TV?

A 4K TV is the relevant display for seeing a game’s 4K output. PSSR and the Pro examples do not mean the console always renders natively at 4K: in Sony’s The Last of Us Part I Remastered example, internal rendering is 1440p before upscaling to 4K.

Whether the difference is noticeable on your set cannot be determined from resolution alone. The game’s implementation and selected mode matter, as do the TV and viewing conditions. The available official examples do not establish how visible the difference will be on a particular TV at a particular distance.

Do you need a 120Hz TV for PS5 Pro?

No. A 120Hz-capable TV matters if you want to use a game mode that outputs at a higher refresh rate, such as a supported mode targeting up to 120 fps. It is not a requirement for every PS5 Pro enhancement: Sony also describes Pro capabilities around 60 fps, and the cited game examples target 60 fps.

Check the refresh-rate capability of your TV and the supported modes for the specific game. A console feature does not make a game’s 120 fps mode available if the game or display does not support it.

Which console makes more sense for your setup?

  • Choose PS5 Pro for graphics if you play games with Pro-specific enhancements and want access to their PSSR, ray-tracing, or higher-frame-rate modes. The benefit varies by game.
  • Your 4K TV can show 4K output, including output created by upscaling; that alone does not make the internal render native 4K.
  • A 120Hz TV is useful if you want higher-refresh-rate modes in games that support them. It is not necessary just to use Pro enhancements targeting 60 fps.
  • Keep your current setup if the games you play do not have Pro enhancements you value, or your display and preferences do not make those modes useful. The evidence here does not support a blanket recommendation to replace a TV or upgrade every PS5.

Sony’s current product page says more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced for PS5 Pro; the supported catalog can change, so check the official PS5 Pro page for the current list.
