PS5 vs. PS6: What Developers Can Compare Once PS6 Games Are in Testing

By VGSources Team 10 min read

There is no public confirmation that PS6 games are currently in testing. Sony has confirmed investment in a next-generation PlayStation platform, but its public statements do not identify PS6 development kits, a PS6 game, a test build, specifications, launch timing, or performance results. That means no honest PS5-versus-PS6 performance verdict exists yet.

What developers can do now is establish a rigorous PS5 baseline and define the measurements that will make a future comparison meaningful. When Sony or a named developer publicly confirms representative PS6 hardware and software, the useful comparison will focus on frame-time behavior, image quality, memory pressure, asset streaming, compatibility and repeatability—not headline numbers alone.

What is—and is not—confirmed about PS6 testing

Sony’s most specific public statement in the supplied material is its 2026 Game & Network Services investor Q&A. Sony Group Corporation says: “In developing the next-generation platform, we aim to anticipate changes in how players play and their evolving needs, while making the PlayStation ecosystem more accessible and approachable to a broader range of players.” Read the full corporate Q&A summary at Sony’s 2026 investor Q&A.

That statement establishes work on a next-generation platform. It does not establish any of the following:

  • that Sony calls the platform “PS6”;
  • that developers have received PS6 development kits;
  • that a PS6 game has entered internal, closed, or public testing;
  • what the processor, graphics architecture, memory, storage, display output, price, or release date will be; or
  • how a PS6 game performs against a PS5 game.

Sony’s Beta Program at PlayStation says test activities can involve games at early, middle, or later development stages, as well as console features. It describes the program generally and does not identify PS6 hardware or PS6 titles as participants. The PlayStation Partners site describes support and testing systems for partners, but it also does not publicly confirm PS6 kits or a named PS6 game in testing.

“PS6 games are in testing” should therefore be treated as a conditional premise in any current article. A credible confirmation would need to come from Sony or a named developer and identify the hardware or development environment, the software being tested, or measurable specifications. General beta-program information, job listings, anonymous claims, or Sony’s broad next-generation investment are not equivalent evidence.

The PS5 baseline developers can cite today

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2020 launch specification table provides a fixed, citable baseline for the current-generation console. These are manufacturer specifications, not promises that every game reaches a particular resolution or frame rate.

Official PS5 launch specifications
Subsystem Published PS5 specification How to use it in a comparison
CPU x86-64 AMD Ryzen “Zen 2,” 8 cores and 16 threads; variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz Compare simulation, game-thread and frame-time behavior under the same workload; do not treat peak frequency as delivered performance.
GPU AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine with ray-tracing acceleration; variable frequency up to 2.23 GHz and 10.3 TFLOPS Record the actual rendering mode, ray-tracing features, resolution and frame rate rather than inferring image quality from TFLOPS.
System memory 16 GB GDDR6 at 448 GB/s bandwidth Measure the game’s usable allocation, streaming behavior and memory pressure, not capacity in isolation.
Storage 825 GB SSD with 5.5 GB/s raw read bandwidth Use repeatable loads and traversal tests; raw bandwidth is not the same as a measured load time.
Display output HDMI output supporting 4K 120 Hz televisions and variable refresh rate specified by HDMI 2.1 Document the selected output mode, refresh rate and VRR state for every capture.

Source for every specification in the table: Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 launch specifications. The figures describe the platform, not a universal result in retail software. A game can use dynamic resolution, reconstruction, different quality modes, variable frame rates, or a CPU- or GPU-limited workload while running on exactly this hardware.

What this baseline lets a developer record

A PS5 baseline is useful only when the test report says what was actually measured. At minimum, record the game build, console system software, display mode, graphics preset, resolution behavior, frame-rate target, ray-tracing options, save state, scene, and capture method. If a result is from a retail patch, identify that patch; if it is from a development build, label it as such.

Developers should separate average frame rate from frame-time consistency. A nominal 60 frames per second target corresponds to roughly 16.67 milliseconds per frame, but a high average can conceal spikes that cause visible stutter. Report percentiles or a frame-time graph when possible, and identify whether the bottleneck is the CPU, GPU, memory system, storage path, or synchronization between them.

What a defensible PS5-versus-PS6 comparison should measure

Once representative PS6 hardware and matched software are verifiably available, use the following axes. They are a test plan, not claims about unannounced PS6 capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU behavior and frame times

Run the same simulation workload: the same level, non-player-character count, physics state, streaming state and target frame rate. Capture game-thread, render-thread and worker-thread timing where the development environment permits it. A future console may improve peak frequency, core design, scheduling or available CPU time, but the reader needs to know which part of the frame became faster.

  • Use repeatable traversal and combat scenes instead of a menu or an empty test room.
  • Record average, worst-case and percentile frame times, not just a single frame-rate number.
  • Identify whether either platform is CPU-limited at the chosen settings.
  • Keep simulation settings identical unless the comparison is explicitly testing a higher-quality PS6 mode.

GPU workload and image quality

State whether each image is rendered natively or reconstructed. Record internal render resolution, output resolution, reconstruction or upscaling method, anti-aliasing, shadow quality, texture filtering, ray-tracing features and frame-rate mode. A 4K output signal does not prove native 4K rendering, and a higher frame rate can require a different internal resolution or effects budget.

Compare like-for-like first, then show an optional “best practical mode” for each platform. In screenshots or video, use the same camera position, motion and display capture path. Explain whether a visible difference comes from resolution, reconstruction, lighting, ray tracing, texture detail, animation, or a changed artistic setting.

Memory pressure and streaming

Measure actual game memory use, allocation limits visible to the developer, texture residency, geometry residency, decompression work and eviction behavior. Do not compare only headline capacity. Two systems with different totals can expose different amounts to a game after the operating system and system services reserve memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful tests include a rapid camera turn, a long traversal through a dense area, a checkpoint reload and a scene that forces high-resolution textures and geometry to stream simultaneously. Report visible texture substitutions, pop-in, stalls and traversal speed alongside memory counters.

Storage and asset delivery

The PS5’s 5.5 GB/s figure is raw SSD read bandwidth. End-to-end loading also depends on asset layout, compression, decompression, CPU work, shader preparation, engine scheduling, synchronization and the amount of data the scene actually requests. A future PS6 comparison must therefore measure a complete workload.

Use fixed save states and repeat each scenario several times. Test cold launch, warm launch, checkpoint reload, fast travel and uninterrupted traversal. Specify whether the timer starts at a button press, an application request, a loading screen, or the first interactive frame. Keep the definition identical on both platforms.

Compatibility and platform features

Document which APIs, controller behaviors, system features and legacy titles work on each platform, and under what conditions. A compatibility claim should identify the supported game or feature, the required system software, whether a patch is needed and whether enhanced behavior is automatic or optional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer backward compatibility, accessory support, save transfer, cross-generation entitlement or enhanced modes from a faster processor or a new graphics architecture. Those are platform-policy and software questions that require explicit documentation.

Repeatability and disclosure

Every result should carry its conditions with it. Identify hardware revision or engineering-sample status, firmware, game build identifier, graphics settings, display, capture hardware, scene, save file, ambient test conditions and the number of runs. Pre-release hardware and software can change; label them prominently and do not present their results as final retail behavior.

A step-by-step test protocol for future PS6 builds

  1. Verify the test subject. Confirm the source of the PS6 hardware and build. Record whether Sony, a named developer or another authorized party supplied it. Do not treat an unverified image, rumor or generic beta invitation as a PS6 test unit.
  2. Freeze versions. Record console firmware, development-kit revision, game build number, SDK version and every relevant patch. If the two platforms run different content revisions, explain why and identify the differences.
  3. Match the workload. Use the same scene, assets, save state, population, weather, simulation settings and camera path. For a cross-generation title, confirm that the same feature set is active before changing quality settings.
  4. Define the output. Write down resolution targets, internal-resolution behavior, reconstruction, anti-aliasing, ray tracing, shadows, textures, performance mode and VRR state before capturing. Save screenshots of the settings menus where possible.
  5. Instrument CPU and GPU timing. Capture frame times and relevant counters with the development tools available for each platform. Mark shader compilation, traversal hitches, asynchronous-loading events and other one-time costs instead of hiding them in an average.
  6. Measure memory and streaming. Log allocations, residency, eviction, decompression and streaming stalls during repeatable traversal and reload tests. Note any visible asset substitution or pop-in.
  7. Measure complete load paths. Use a predeclared start and end event for cold launch, checkpoint reload, fast travel and first interactive frame. Run each test multiple times and report the spread, not only the fastest run.
  8. Check features independently. Test controller functions, system features, legacy software and graphics enhancements as separate cases. Record prerequisites and failures rather than folding them into a general “compatibility” score.
  9. Publish the conditions with the result. Include hardware status, software identifiers, settings, scene, capture method, run count and known limitations in the chart or caption. Keep engineering-sample results separate from retail expectations.

Common mistakes that make console comparisons misleading

Using peak frequency or TFLOPS as a game-speed guarantee

Peak CPU frequency and a GPU throughput figure are useful specifications, but neither describes the complete engine. Frame time also depends on architecture, cache behavior, scheduling, memory access, shader workload, engine code and the selected settings. Use specifications to describe the hardware and measurements to describe the game.

Calling reconstructed output native resolution

Output resolution is the signal sent to the display. Internal resolution may change every frame, and reconstruction may produce a sharp 4K output from a lower render resolution. A fair report labels both values and names the reconstruction method when it is known.

Comparing different modes without saying so

A PS5 quality mode and a hypothetical PS6 performance mode may prioritize different image quality, effects or frame-rate targets. First compare matched modes. If you show the best-looking or fastest practical mode, present it as a separate configuration rather than as a direct hardware head-to-head.

Turning raw storage bandwidth into a loading promise

Bandwidth is a component of a load path, not its result. Compression, decompression, asset dependencies and engine scheduling can dominate. Measure the complete path and define the timer.

Ignoring pre-release status

Development kits, engineering samples and unfinished builds can have debug overhead, temporary limits, missing optimizations or disabled features. A pre-release number is useful only when its status is explicit and it is not presented as a final retail specification.

Using general PlayStation beta information as PS6 evidence

The public beta page covers games and console features across development stages, but it does not identify PS6 participants. A beta invitation or feature test can be real without being a next-generation-console test.

Where PS5 Pro fits—and where it does not

PS5 Pro is a separate point in the current PS5 family, not evidence of PS6 hardware. Sony Interactive Entertainment describes PS5 Pro as offering advanced ray tracing, sharper image clarity for 4K televisions, high-frame-rate gameplay and Game Boost for compatible PS4 and PS5 titles. See the official PS5 Pro announcement.

If a study includes PS5 Pro, put it in its own comparison column and identify enhanced titles, patches, Game Boost status and selected modes. A mid-generation PS5-family result can show how software scales within the current platform generation; it cannot establish PS6 performance, architecture or feature support.

What would change the answer

The article’s central uncertainty ends when a primary disclosure supplies verifiable evidence. The most useful update would include several of these elements:

  • a Sony or named-developer statement that identifies PS6 hardware or a next-generation development kit;
  • a named game, build or test program and its development stage;
  • developer-visible specifications or confirmed platform features;
  • repeatable measurements tied to identified hardware and software; and
  • clear separation between engineering samples, preview builds and final retail products.

Until those details exist, the defensible position is not that PS6 testing has begun, but that Sony is publicly discussing next-generation platform development and that a PS5 baseline is ready for a controlled future comparison.

Conclusion

Developers can already prepare the comparison framework: use Sony’s published PS5 CPU, GPU, memory, storage and display figures as the baseline, then measure matched workloads rather than relying on headline specifications. A genuine PS5-versus-PS6 test will need identified hardware, matched builds, controlled scenes, frame-time and image-quality data, memory and streaming measurements, compatibility notes and fully disclosed pre-release conditions. No public evidence cited here supports a PS6 performance verdict or confirms that PS6 games are currently in testing.
