Choose the PS5 if you mainly play at a TV or monitor and your priorities are PlayStation games and compatible display features. Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want to play PC games in handheld form and value the option to connect it to a monitor or other peripherals. Your existing library, where you play, and whether your specific games work well on Deck matter more than a blanket winner.
Quick comparison
| What matters | Steam Deck OLED | PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Handheld PC gaming, with the option to connect peripherals or an external display | Playing on a TV or monitor |
| Built-in display | 7.4-inch OLED, 1280 × 800, up to 90 Hz | Uses a connected TV or monitor |
| Display features documented here | USB-C DisplayPort output supports up to 4K at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz | 1440p output and VRR on compatible displays |
| Storage expansion | MicroSD slot | M.2 SSD expansion connector on the CFI-21XX model manual |
| Portability | Native handheld play | Remote Play streams from a console to supported devices; it is not independent handheld play |
These specifications describe different use cases, not a direct performance comparison. An external resolution supported by the Deck does not establish how well a particular game will run at that resolution.

Choose based on where you play
Pick Steam Deck OLED for play away from the TV
The Deck is a portable PC gaming device with a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED screen and refresh rates up to 90 Hz. Valve lists a 50 Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay; that is a manufacturer-stated range, not a guarantee for every game or setting. Valve’s Steam Deck tech specs also list a microSD slot and USB-C DisplayPort output.
When you want a larger screen, the USB-C output supports up to 4K at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz. Those are output capabilities, not a promise that a given game will run smoothly at those resolutions. Valve also describes connecting the Deck to peripherals or an official dock in its Steam Deck OLED introduction.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Pick PS5 for a TV- or monitor-centered setup
The PS5 is the natural fit if the console will stay in a living-room or desk setup. Sony documents 1440p output and variable refresh rate (VRR) for compatible displays. VRR requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 TV or monitor, and results vary by display and game; see Sony’s PS5 display-feature guidance.
Remote Play can extend compatible PS4 or PS5 games to supported devices, but the game streams from a console rather than running independently on a handheld. Sony requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience; actual quality depends on the network environment. Check Sony’s Remote Play requirements before treating it as part of your setup.

Let your games decide
Compare the games you already own and the ones you intend to play. The Deck provides access to PC games, but Steam Deck compatibility is not uniform across the Steam catalog. Steam labels individual titles as Verified or Playable, among other statuses, so look up the specific games you care about in the Steam Deck compatibility listings before buying.

On the PS5 side, weigh the PlayStation games you want and whether you prefer to play them on your main display. The choice is less about which library is universally better and more about which device fits the games you actually plan to use.
Plan storage expansion around the device
Steam Deck OLED has a microSD slot for storage expansion. The PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector. These are different expansion approaches: check the current manufacturer requirements for a specific card or drive before purchasing or installing it. Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guidance covers the PS5 process.

- Choose Steam Deck OLED if handheld play is central, your priority games suit Steam Deck, and you want the flexibility to connect an external display or peripherals.
- Choose PS5 if you mainly play at a TV or monitor, want a PlayStation-centered setup, or have a compatible display whose features matter to you.
- Consider Remote Play only as an extension if you already plan to use a PS5 and have a suitable network and supported device; it does not replace a standalone handheld.
