Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNeither PS5 nor Xbox Series X has a proven universal lead in game libraries or subscriptions. The better fit depends on the specific games you want, the subscription tier you would actually pay for, your region, and whether you prefer downloads or cloud streaming. Check the current catalog for your must-play titles before choosing.
Which console has the better game library?
There is no reliable single catalog total that settles the comparison. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus game finder displayed 642 games when accessed on October 7, 2026, but that is a changing snapshot, not a permanent count. The official Xbox catalog page retrieved for this comparison did not provide a comparable total, and the platforms may count eligible games differently. A higher headline number would not establish which service has more games you personally want to play.
Instead, search each official catalog for the games and franchises you care about, and confirm that each title is available on your console and in your country. Microsoft’s catalog offers filters for Xbox Series X|S, recently added games, games leaving soon, and games playable day one: Xbox Game Pass catalog. Sony’s US finder shows PlayStation Plus catalog games: PlayStation Plus game catalog.
Is Game Pass better than PlayStation Plus?
That depends on the plan, not just the service name. PlayStation Plus has three tiers: Essential includes monthly games and online multiplayer; Extra adds the Game Catalog; and Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Sony also says, “From January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently.” See Sony’s PlayStation Plus plan comparison.

Xbox Game Pass benefits also depend on the plan selected. Microsoft’s comparison page is the place to check which plan includes the catalog access and other benefits relevant to you: Xbox Game Pass plans. Do not assume that every Game Pass tier includes the same games or day-one access. Xbox’s July 21, 2026 update listed arriving games with their applicable plans and platforms, illustrating that eligibility can differ by title: Xbox Wire’s July 21, 2026 Game Pass update.
Which subscription has more games?
The available official figures do not support a fair numerical winner. PlayStation’s US catalog finder showed 642 games at access time; the retrieved Xbox catalog page did not show a comparable total. Catalogs change, and inclusion rules can differ, so comparing that PlayStation snapshot with an assumed Xbox total would be misleading.

Compare the titles you want in the exact plan you would buy. A game listed in a service catalog is access while eligible, not permanent ownership. Sony notes that some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles have an end date and can leave the service; Xbox provides a “Leaving soon” filter in its catalog. If you are unlikely to finish a game before it leaves, consider whether buying it separately makes more sense.
How to choose for your games and play style
- Make a short must-play list. Search both official catalogs for the games you intend to play, rather than choosing by the biggest-looking catalog figure.
- Match the plan to the benefit. On PlayStation, Extra is the tier that adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds classics, trials, and cloud streaming. On Xbox, verify the selected Game Pass plan’s catalog and day-one benefits on Microsoft’s plan page.
- Check platform and access method. Sony states that PS5 games in its catalog can only be downloaded to a PS5 console. Premium includes cloud streaming, but the specific games and supported access conditions should be checked in Sony’s current information. Compare this with the platforms and play options listed for each Xbox title.
- Check removals and your time to play. Look for Sony end dates and Xbox’s “Leaving soon” filter before relying on a catalog game for a long playthrough.
- Confirm local availability and price. The figures and official pages cited here are US-facing. Plan benefits, prices, and catalogs can vary by country and change over time, so check the storefront for your region before subscribing.
What the comparison means for a console purchase
Choose based on the exclusives and other specific games you want, then treat subscriptions as a way to broaden access—not as a permanent guarantee that a particular game will remain available. If your decision hinges on one or two titles, verify those titles in your region and on the plan tier you can afford before buying a console. A console purchase does not, by itself, establish that a subscription is included; confirm any bundle or subscription terms in the retailer’s listing.
