Start with the TV you already own and the cloud gaming service you want. If its exact model supports the service’s app, you may need only a compatible controller. If not, a supported streaming device such as a specified generation of Fire TV Stick can add access without replacing the TV. Buy a console when you also want to play games locally—not because cloud gaming inherently requires one.
Which option should you buy?
| Option | Best fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Smart TV with a built-in gaming app | Your current TV is supported, or you already plan to buy a TV and its exact model supports your service. | Exact model and year, operating system and firmware, country, available app, controller support, and subscription requirements. |
| Streaming device | Your HDMI TV is otherwise suitable and you want to add a supported app without replacing the screen. | Exact device generation and software version, app availability, controller, subscription, network setup, and any resolution limits. |
| Console | You want local console gaming as well as cloud access, or specifically want a console ecosystem and its game library. | Console and game costs, subscription conditions, local versus streamed play, available TV inputs, and whether cloud gaming is your main use. |
Compare the choices by service compatibility, total cost including a controller and subscription, network and image requirements, and whether you want local play. No TV brand is universally best for cloud gaming: providers publish different supported-device lists.
Will cloud gaming work on your smart TV?
It may, but support is model- and service-specific. Do not assume a TV is compatible just because it is a recent model from a supported brand. Check the provider’s current list for the exact model or range, operating system, firmware, country, and app.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox lists select LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer, including certain updated 2022 and 2023 OLED, QNED, NanoCell, and UHD models, and select Samsung smart TVs from 2020 onward. These are selected models, not every TV from those years. Check the Xbox TV support list before buying.

GeForce NOW
NVIDIA lists LG and Samsung TVs from 2020–2025. LG TVs need current webOS firmware and browser updates; the exact supported range and features can depend on model. Check NVIDIA’s current system requirements for the TV and feature you intend to use.
Gaming portals are not a guarantee of every app
LG announced on February 21, 2025, that its Gaming Portal was available on webOS 23-and-newer TVs in 19 markets at that time. The announcement named GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, Boosteroid, Blacknut, and soon Xbox Cloud among its partners. That dated rollout does not establish that every listed service is currently available on every LG model or in every country. Verify the app on the TV and in your region.

Can you use a Fire TV Stick for cloud gaming?
Yes, if you choose a generation and software version listed by the service you plan to use. Xbox names Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen). NVIDIA lists Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (1st Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen), each subject to a minimum Fire OS version.
The two providers’ lists are not interchangeable: check the exact device and minimum software requirements on the Xbox page or NVIDIA page for your service. A model name alone is not enough if the generation or operating system differs.

Do you need a console for cloud gaming on a TV?
No. Supported smart TVs and streaming devices can run cloud gaming apps without an external console. You still need the service’s required account or subscription, a compatible controller, and an internet connection.
A console makes sense if you also want local play, console-specific features, or a particular console ecosystem. Treat cloud access as one part of that decision: its availability, plan requirements, supported games, and streaming features can vary by service and market. Do not assume that buying a console, TV, or streaming stick bundles a subscription, game library, or particular cloud feature.

What else do you need besides the screen or streaming stick?
Controller
Xbox’s TV instructions require a compatible controller. NVIDIA says TV navigation uses a physical keyboard and mouse, while gameplay requires a supported gamepad; it lists Microsoft Xbox controllers and Sony PS5 DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers. Confirm support for your specific controller and app before purchase.
Subscription and supported games
Xbox says most cloud games require an active Game Pass subscription and supported games, with some exceptions. Availability can vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Check the current service terms and game availability for your location rather than assuming a subscription or device includes a particular title.

Internet connection
Xbox recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi at 20 Mbps or higher for TV cloud gaming. NVIDIA’s published smart-TV bandwidth targets are:
| GeForce NOW smart-TV target | Published bandwidth |
|---|---|
| HD at up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| FHD at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 FPS | 40 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router and specifies less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center. GeForce NOW Ultimate is required for 4K on smart TVs. These are service requirements or recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play: actual results depend on the network, location, device, and service conditions. Xbox also warns that streamed game performance depends on connection, location, and device.
How to choose without buying more than you need
- Pick the service first. Check that it is available in your country and identify the subscription, supported games, and controller it requires.
- Check your existing TV. Search the provider’s current compatibility list for the exact TV model or supported range, operating system, and firmware. If the app is supported, start with the TV you have.
- If the TV is unsupported, check streaming devices. Match the exact generation and software version to the service’s list. A Fire TV Stick 4K Max is a plausible option only when its particular generation is supported by your chosen service.
- Assess the connection. Compare your connection with the service’s published guidance; try Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi where available. Consider networking equipment only if the existing setup is inadequate.
- Choose a console for local gaming too. If you mainly want streamed games, compare the supported TV or streaming-device route before paying for a console you do not otherwise need.
Compatibility lists and service features can change, and support does not extend automatically to every model sold under a brand. Recheck the provider’s current requirements before checkout.
