On your PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Note whether it obtains an IP address, connects to the internet, signs in to PlayStation Network, and what NAT type or error code it reports.
A missing Wi‑Fi network, rejected password, failed internet test, and PSN-only error have different solutions. Work through the matching section below instead of changing advanced settings immediately.

Start with these quick checks
- Check another device on the same Wi‑Fi. If everything is offline, troubleshoot the modem, router, or ISP.
- Check the official PlayStation Service Status page. A PSN outage can look like a Wi‑Fi failure even when the PS5 is online.
- Restart the PS5: press the PS button, select the power icon, then choose Restart PS5.
- Restart the modem and router. Turn them off, unplug them if separate, wait at least 30 seconds for a normal reboot—or five minutes when following Sony’s persistent connection-error guidance—then power the modem on first, wait until it is online, and start the router.
- Move the PS5 closer to the router and remove obstructions or interference. A full Wi‑Fi signal does not prove that DHCP, DNS, internet routing, or PSN is working.
Sony’s setup and error guidance is available through its internet connection support page and NW-102650-4 troubleshooting page.

If the saved connection may be corrupt, highlight the network in the same screen, press the Options button, and choose the available remove, forget, or delete option. Scan again and re-enter the password. Menu wording can vary with PS5 system software.
If your network is not listed, scroll down to Set Up Manually. You can also choose Set Up Using WPS Button if your router supports WPS. Confirm that the router is broadcasting the correct SSID and that it is not hidden or separated into a different band.
Fixes based on what the test reports
1. The PS5 cannot see your Wi‑Fi network
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi is enabled and that other devices can see the SSID.
- Move the console close to the router and test again.
- Try separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs if your router exposes them. 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and through walls better, while 5 GHz is often faster but has shorter range.
- Check that the router’s wireless radio is enabled and its firmware is current.
- Temporarily test a simpler home SSID rather than a guest network, enterprise network, or heavily automated band-steering setup.
If no Wi‑Fi networks appear anywhere but a phone hotspot also fails, the PS5’s software or wireless hardware becomes more suspect.

2. The password is rejected
Re-enter the password instead of relying on the saved profile, checking capitalization, numbers, and special characters. Confirm that the router password has not recently changed.
Check the router’s security configuration. Sony’s setup guidance lists WPA, WPA2, WEP, and WPA3 labels, but WEP is obsolete and insecure and should not be used for a modern home network. WPA3 compatibility can also depend on the router’s exact mode, so temporarily testing a compatible WPA2 or mixed configuration may identify a router compatibility issue. Restore the secure configuration after testing.
3. The PS5 cannot obtain an IP address
This usually points to the local network rather than PSN. Restart the router, check whether access control, MAC filtering, parental controls, or a full DHCP address pool is blocking the console, and make sure IPv4 is enabled.
PS5 supports IPv6, but it does not support an IPv6-only network. Your router must provide IPv4 as well, usually through dual-stack operation. Router labels and paths differ by manufacturer and ISP.

4. The PS5 gets an IP address but fails the internet test
Test another device, restart the modem and router, and check for an ISP outage. Then connect the PS5 temporarily by Ethernet. If Ethernet also fails, investigate the modem, ISP, router firewall, IPv4 configuration, or DNS. If Ethernet works, focus on the wireless connection.
5. Internet works but PSN fails
First check the PlayStation Network status page. If no outage is listed, restart the router, update its firmware, and check the PS5’s NAT type. A PSN-only failure can involve DNS, NAT, routing, account authentication, parental controls, or firewall rules—not necessarily Wi‑Fi.
Use Ethernet to isolate the problem
Connect a LAN cable directly from the router to the PS5. Then open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect, and run the connection test.
- Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi fails: investigate signal strength, interference, band selection, router wireless settings, or Wi‑Fi compatibility.
- Wi‑Fi and Ethernet both fail: investigate the modem, ISP, router, PSN status, DNS, account issues, or the console.
- Ethernet works only directly through the modem: look for router firewall problems, double NAT, or a mesh system configured behind an ISP gateway.
Ethernet is also often the most reliable permanent connection if running a cable is practical. A basic reputable cable is sufficient; an expensive cable will not increase your internet speed.

Try a phone hotspot
Connect the PS5 to a temporary phone hotspot through Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Hotspot works: the PS5’s Wi‑Fi hardware is probably functioning. Investigate your home router, ISP, DNS, security settings, or signal.
- Hotspot and home Wi‑Fi both fail: suspect PS5 software or hardware, although hotspot data limits, carrier restrictions, or strict NAT can also interfere.
A hotspot is an isolation test, not necessarily a suitable long-term gaming connection.
Advanced network settings
Under the PS5 network setup screen, choose Advanced Settings. Sony exposes IP address, DHCP Host Name, DNS, MTU, Proxy, and—on supported PS5 Pro hardware—Multi-Link Operation (MLO).

Change only one setting at a time and retest. Return it to Automatic if it does not help.
DNS
A manual DNS server can help when the PS5 has network access but cannot resolve PlayStation or other internet addresses. It cannot fix a wrong password, weak signal, dead router, ISP outage, PSN outage, or hardware failure.
Sony allows manual DNS values and mentions trying a public DNS temporarily for certain errors. Google Public DNS and Cloudflare DNS are examples of third-party services, but neither is guaranteed to be faster or more reliable at every location. Use DNS changes only as a reversible test.
MTU, proxy, and IP changes
Do not change MTU, proxy, DHCP, or IP settings randomly. These settings can create new connection problems. Use a static IP only when your router or network administrator requires it, and consult your ISP or router manufacturer for the correct values.
Router settings that can block a PS5
- Update router firmware through the manufacturer or ISP.
- Disable device access controls or parental-control rules targeting the PS5.
- Check MAC filtering, guest-network isolation, and captive portals.
- Avoid hotel, dorm, apartment, and public networks that require browser-based sign-in; PS5 may not be able to complete the portal normally.
- Check for double NAT when an ISP gateway is connected to a second router or mesh system.
- Test a separate 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz SSID if band steering causes inconsistent connections.
Do not permanently disable router security just to test a connection. Restore any temporary change immediately.
NAT, ports, and multiplayer failures
If basic internet works but parties, multiplayer, downloads, or PSN sign-in fail, restart the router and investigate NAT or double NAT. UPnP may help when supported and appropriately configured.
Port forwarding is not a general Wi‑Fi fix. Sony lists these ports for certain PSN troubleshooting situations:

- TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
- UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152–65535
Do not blindly forward a broad range, expose the console in a DMZ, or weaken the firewall as a first step. Ask the router manufacturer or ISP for help, especially if you have double NAT.
PS5 Pro: test Multi-Link Operation
Sony identifies Multi-Link Operation as an available advanced setting for the CFI-7000 model group when the access point supports it. If you have a PS5 Pro and a compatible router, test MLO enabled and disabled—one state at a time—then run the connection test. This setting does not apply to every PS5 model or router.
Update before considering a reset
Update router firmware using the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions. If the PS5 can connect through Ethernet or another network, check for system software updates.
Do not assume a particular PS5 update caused the problem without a current, verifiable Sony notice. If the console cannot connect to any network, an update may not be possible through normal settings; continue with isolation testing and support instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Factory reset is the last resort
A reset deletes user data and returns the console to factory settings. Do not use it near the beginning of troubleshooting.
Before considering it, back up saved data, confirm cloud backup availability through PlayStation Plus, use an external USB drive where supported if the console cannot get online, and record your account credentials and game-installation information. The documented path is generally Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset your console, though labels can change with system software.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PS5 connect to Wi‑Fi but not PSN?
Check the official PlayStation Service Status page first. If PSN is operating, investigate NAT, DNS, router firmware, double NAT, firewall rules, and account sign-in rather than treating it as a basic Wi‑Fi failure.
Will changing DNS fix PS5 Wi‑Fi?
Only sometimes. DNS may help name-resolution failures after the PS5 is already connected, but it cannot fix weak signal, a wrong password, an ISP outage, a PSN outage, or defective hardware.
Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?
Use 2.4 GHz for greater range and wall penetration, or 5 GHz when the PS5 is close enough for its typically faster, less congested connection. Testing both is more useful than assuming one is always better.

Yes, but PS5 does not support IPv6-only networks. The router must also provide IPv4.
Do I need to open ports?
Usually not for a basic Wi‑Fi problem. Port forwarding is an advanced option for selected NAT or PSN issues and should be configured cautiously with router or ISP guidance.
Should I factory-reset my PS5?
Only after checking the router, PSN status, Ethernet, and a phone hotspot, and after backing up your data. A reset is destructive and is not a first-line network fix.
