Some PS5 consoles support 100–240 V at 50/60 Hz, but worldwide compatibility is not universal. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual and CFI-71XX PS5 Pro safety guide list 100–240 V, while the regional CFI-12XXA safety guide lists 220–240 V. Check the electrical rating on your exact console before traveling. If it covers the destination supply, you may need only a plug-shape adapter; if it does not, do not connect the PS5. Sony also says not to connect the included AC cord to a voltage transformer or inverter.
Why there is no single “worldwide voltage” answer
“PS5” describes a family of consoles sold in different markets, not one electrical specification shared by every unit. The model number and region determine which rating applies. Treating every PS5 as automatically compatible with every country can damage the console, overheat the power cord, or create a burn and fire hazard.

Sony’s own documentation shows the difference clearly. The CFI-21XX instruction manual and the CFI-71XX PS5 Pro safety guide specify an input of 100–240 V at 50/60 Hz. However, Sony’s regional CFI-12XXA safety guide specifies 220–240 V at 50/60 Hz. Those are materially different ranges: a CFI-12XXA unit is not documented for lower-voltage supplies simply because another PS5 model is.

Find the exact model before packing
Locate the CFI model number printed on the console and use that number to select the corresponding Sony manual. Do not infer the rating from the console’s color, storage capacity, disc drive, purchase date, or the voltage used where you bought it. If the label and the manual appear inconsistent, stop and verify the model with Sony support rather than guessing.
How to check destination compatibility
Voltage compatibility is a comparison between two numbers: the destination’s mains voltage and the PS5’s stated input range. Frequency also matters, although the Sony ratings cited here cover both 50 Hz and 60 Hz.

- Read the PS5 rating. Record the complete range and frequency printed on the console or in its matching manual. Examples documented by Sony are 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz and 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz.
- Confirm the destination supply. Check the voltage and frequency provided by the hotel, apartment, venue, or local utility. Do not rely on a country name alone if you are using unusual accommodation, a generator, a vehicle outlet, or a travel power station.
- Compare the voltage. The destination voltage must fall inside the PS5’s stated range. A 100–240 V unit covers any supply from 100 through 240 volts; a 220–240 V unit does not cover a supply below 220 volts.
- Compare frequency. The destination should be 50 or 60 Hz when the console is rated 50/60 Hz. If a source uses a different frequency, obtain specific electrical advice before connecting it.
- Check the outlet shape. If the electrical supply is compatible but the included cord’s plug does not fit, a properly rated plug-shape adapter may be required.
- Refuse an out-of-range connection. If the voltage is outside the printed rating or cannot be confirmed, leave the PS5 unplugged. Do not attempt to “make it work” with an unapproved converter.
| PS5 rating and destination supply | Electrical result | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 100–240 V PS5 and a supply within 100–240 V | Voltage is within range. | Use the included cord; add a plug adapter only if the outlet shape differs. |
| 220–240 V PS5 and a supply within 220–240 V | Voltage is within the documented range. | Use the included cord; add a plug adapter only if needed. |
| 220–240 V PS5 and a supply below 220 V | Outside the documented range. | Do not plug in the console. |
| Any PS5 and a supply above its maximum rating | Outside the documented range. | Do not plug in the console. |
| Destination voltage or frequency unknown | Compatibility cannot be established. | Ask the accommodation or an electrician before use. |
A plug adapter is not a voltage converter
A plug adapter changes the physical shape of the connection so a compatible PS5 plug can fit a different wall socket. It does not raise or lower the electricity supplied by that socket. Therefore, an adapter is appropriate only after the console’s voltage range has been confirmed.
A voltage transformer or converter attempts to change the supply voltage. Sony’s safety instructions do not endorse that solution for overseas travel. The CFI-12XXA guide states: “Do not connect the AC power cord to a voltage transformer or inverter.” Sony identifies overseas travel and vehicle use as examples and warns that a transformer may cause the cord to heat up in the console, potentially causing burns or malfunction. Read the full Sony CFI-12XXA Safety Guide before making travel arrangements.
Because of that warning, do not treat a generic step-up or step-down device as a normal workaround for an out-of-range PS5. If your console is not rated for the destination, the safe choice is not to power it there.

Common travel situations
A 100–240 V PS5 going to a 220–240 V supply
The voltage falls inside the documented range for CFI-21XX and CFI-71XX units. Confirm the frequency is 50 or 60 Hz, use Sony’s included AC cord, and fit a plug adapter if the wall outlet has a different physical pattern. The adapter changes only the plug interface.
A 100–240 V PS5 going to a 100–120 V supply
The voltage also falls inside the documented range for those models. The same checks still apply: verify the actual outlet, inspect the cord and plug, and avoid improvised power strips or damaged adapters.
A 220–240 V CFI-12XXA going to a lower-voltage supply
This is outside the 220–240 V rating listed in Sony’s regional guide. Do not connect the console, even if another PS5 model works on that supply. Sony’s transformer warning means a generic converter should not be presented as the solution.

Using a vehicle outlet, inverter, or travel power station
These sources can have different voltage, frequency, waveform, grounding, and current limits from a normal wall outlet. Sony specifically warns against connecting the AC cord to an inverter for vehicle use. Unless the source’s output meets the console’s rating and Sony’s instructions permit the setup, do not use it.
Travel checklist for an existing PS5
- Photograph the model label. Keep the CFI number and electrical rating with your travel documents so you can identify the unit without relying on memory.
- Download the matching manual. Use Sony’s manuals index and select the document for your exact model family.
- Ask the accommodation for electrical details. Confirm voltage and frequency for the actual room or outlet, especially in older buildings, ships, temporary venues, and generator-powered locations.
- Inspect the included AC cord. Look for cuts, crushed insulation, bent contacts, loose connectors, or heat discoloration. Sony instructs users to use the included cord; a damaged cord should not be used.
- Choose only a plug-shape adapter when required. Ensure it is designed for the destination outlet and is not marketed as a voltage-changing transformer.
- Pack for ventilation. Keep the console’s air openings clear and place it on a stable, dry surface. Do not cover it with clothing or operate it inside tightly packed luggage.
- Connect directly to the confirmed outlet. Avoid unknown converters, inverters, and questionable multi-voltage travel gadgets.
- Test before a long session. Power on while monitoring for unusual heat, smell, buzzing, repeated shutdowns, or breaker trips. If any appears, switch off and unplug it.
What to do if the PS5 will not power on abroad
Check the outlet first
Verify that the outlet is switched on and can power another known-good device. Some hotel outlets are controlled by a room switch or are disabled until a key card is inserted. Do not open the outlet or bypass building protection.

Recheck the voltage comparison
Read the rating again and compare it with the supply you were given. A CFI-12XXA unit connected to a lower-voltage source is not made compatible by changing the plug shape. Disconnect it and do not keep trying different adapters.

Inspect the cord and connections
Unplug the AC cord, check both ends for damage, and reconnect it firmly only if the cord is intact and the supply is confirmed compatible. Do not substitute an unknown cord merely because its connector fits; Sony’s instructions call for the included AC power cord.
Stop after heat, odor, smoke, or repeated trips
Immediately switch off and unplug the PS5 if the cord or console becomes abnormally hot, smells burnt, emits smoke, makes an unusual sound, or repeatedly trips a breaker. Do not resume testing. Allow the equipment to cool in a clear area and arrange inspection through Sony or a qualified technician.
Questions to answer before you leave
- What exact CFI model number is printed on my console?
- Does its rating say 100–240 V or 220–240 V?
- What voltage and frequency does the destination outlet actually provide?
- Does the destination outlet accept my included cord, or do I need a plug-shape adapter?
- Am I being offered a transformer, inverter, vehicle outlet, or travel power station that Sony’s instructions warn against?
- Can I leave the PS5 unplugged if any answer is uncertain?
Answering those questions in order separates the two issues travelers often confuse: electrical compatibility and physical plug fit. The first determines whether powering the console is safe; the second determines whether the cord can connect to the outlet.
