Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6 price or release date. The concern about a costly PS6 is understandable: Sony has identified rising memory costs and supply shortages as pressures on hardware profitability, and says it does not plan to sell hardware at significant losses. But those facts do not establish a retail price. A specific figure circulating online should be treated as an estimate unless Sony confirms it.
What Sony has said about PS6 price and timing
Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki was reported by GameSpot as saying the company had not decided when to launch its next console or at what price. Sony’s June 2026 investor Q&A likewise describes continued investment in a next-generation platform and the evaluation of technology, hardware and business-model scenarios, without announcing a price or launch date. Sony’s Q&A summary says timing decisions involve factors including technology, marketing, regional dynamics and pricing.

That leaves important product details unconfirmed, too: the sources do not establish the final console name, model range, specifications or launch lineup. A precise PS6 price—or a claim that a particular price is inevitable—goes beyond what Sony has disclosed.
Why the price question feels more serious now
Memory costs are a real pressure, not a price announcement
Sony’s FY2025 filing identifies expected increases in memory-semiconductor prices and supply shortages as risks for hardware. It says the company may adjust unit sales and promotions flexibly to manage profitability. That is evidence of cost and supply pressure; it is not a forecast of the PS6’s retail price. Sony’s FY2025 filing also reports Game & Network Services revenue of ¥4,685,651 million and operating income of ¥463,258 million. Those are segment-wide results, not console unit economics from which a PS6 price can be calculated.

Sony says it will not absorb every cost increase
In the June 5, 2026 Game & Network Services Q&A, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino said it was not realistic to absorb all component cost increases and that the company does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. He also said sales were proceeding as planned at the time and Sony did not believe price increases had reduced customer demand. The comments describe the company’s pricing constraints and business principles; they do not set a price for a future console. Read Sony’s Q&A summary.
What current PS5 prices can—and cannot—tell you
Sony announced PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal price changes effective April 2, 2026. In the US, the Associated Press reported these recommended console prices in connection with that change:
| Console | US recommended price | Context |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | Reported by the Associated Press for the US market after the change effective April 2, 2026. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Reported by the Associated Press for the US market after the change effective April 2, 2026. |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Reported by the Associated Press for the US market after the change effective April 2, 2026. |
The Associated Press account concerns US recommended prices; prices differ by region and may change again. Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement confirms the 2026 price changes and effective date, but that page is the Brazil Portuguese edition, not a source for the US amounts.
PS5 prices show that console pricing can change during a generation, but they do not provide a formula for PS6. The next system’s configuration, exchange rates, regional taxes, launch strategy, promotions and market conditions will all matter, and those details are not settled in the sources available here.

Should you buy a PS5 now or wait?
There is no confirmed PS6 date or price to compare with a PS5 purchase. The practical decision is whether a PS5 meets your needs now, weighed against your interest in next-generation hardware and your willingness to wait without a confirmed schedule.
- Consider buying a PS5 now if you want to play current-generation games soon and the price available in your region fits your budget. Compare current local offers rather than assuming the US recommended prices apply where you live.
- Consider waiting if having the next generation is your priority and you are comfortable with uncertainty about both timing and price. Waiting does not guarantee a particular launch window or lower cost.
- Do not use a rumored PS6 figure as a budget fact. No PS6 retail price has been published in the cited sources, and an estimate is not a confirmed product price.
Sony said in June 2026 that PS5 was in its sixth year. The company also reported more than 93 million PS5 units installed and 125 million monthly active user accounts as of March 2026. Those figures indicate the scale of the existing platform, not PS6 demand, a launch timetable or a price forecast. Sony’s investor Q&A.
Could Sony delay the next generation?
A longer current generation is one possible business consideration, not a confirmed Sony plan. Former PlayStation Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida argued that component costs could make a later launch sensible and that the current generation could continue longer. That is Yoshida’s personal view, as reported by GamesRadar+, not a schedule announced by Sony.
For now, the sound conclusion is limited but useful: Sony has acknowledged cost pressures and has not announced a PS6 price or release date. Claims of a four-figure price, or other exact figures not confirmed by Sony, should be read as speculation unless their origin and assumptions are made clear.
