“Pscript4.dll not found” — what this error means
pscript4.dll is a legacy Microsoft PostScript printer-driver component. If Windows reports that pscript4.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the problem is usually a damaged, incomplete, or incompatible printer-driver package rather than a missing gaming runtime.
The file is associated with Microsoft’s older Pscript printer infrastructure, historically used by Windows NT-era printer packages. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or general-purpose application DLL. Microsoft describes Pscript as its standard driver for PostScript printers. - Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history and restore it only if it came from a trusted, signed printer package and has been verified as safe.
- You found a standalone download page for the DLL: do not copy that file into

The most likely solution is the first one: repair the printer-driver package rather than replacing the DLL by itself.

What is pscript4.dll?
The name refers to a PostScript printer-driver component supplied by Microsoft. Historical Windows NT printer packages included files such as PS4UI.DLL, PSCRIPT4.HLP, PSCRIPT.NTF, and PSCRPTFE.NTF alongside PSCRIPT4.DLL. Older printer documentation placed the file in spool-driver folders such as:
%WINDIR%System32spooldriversw32x86
%WINDIR%System32spooldriversw32x862
Those are historical package locations, not instructions to copy a downloaded DLL there. A current Windows installation is not guaranteed to contain this old component.
The file is principally a 32-bit legacy component. A listing that labels a copy “x64” does not prove that a native 64-bit pscript4.dll belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. On 64-bit Windows, the printer driver itself must be 64-bit. A 32-bit printer driver cannot serve as the 64-bit Windows printer driver. Microsoft’s 64-bit printer-driver guidance
That distinction matters because a loader error can mention a missing DLL when the deeper problem is an incompatible driver package or one of its dependencies.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the printer
Start here if the error occurs during printing, when opening printer properties, or while installing an old printer utility.
Remove the affected printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer associated with the error.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
Disconnect the printer temporarily if it is connected by USB. For a network printer, note its address or queue name before removing it.
Add it again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- Select the printer and complete setup.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
Windows may obtain a suitable driver through Windows Update. If it does not, download the driver only from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Choose the exact Windows version and system architecture.

Microsoft’s own printer guidance also recommends obtaining the latest driver through Windows Update or the manufacturer. Microsoft printer-driver installation guidance
Check whether the driver is actually PostScript
PostScript, PCL, GDI, and IPP drivers are not interchangeable. If the printer supports PostScript, select the manufacturer’s current PostScript driver. If it does not, use its supported PCL, GDI, or IPP driver instead of forcing an old Pscript package.
The repair worked if:
- the printer installs without the
pscript4.dllmessage; - the queue opens normally;
- a test page prints;
- the old application no longer fails when it accesses the printer.
If the same error returns immediately, continue with the driver cleanup and architecture checks below.
When manually hunting through manufacturer pages for the correct model, Windows version, and architecture, it is easy to install an older package again. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the printer manufacturer remains the authoritative source for a model-specific driver.
Fix 2: Remove the old printer-driver package
Removing a printer from Settings does not always remove every old driver file. A stale package can cause Windows to reuse the same broken Pscript components.

Open Print Server Properties
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:

control printers
- Press Enter.
- Select any printer in the Devices and Printers window.
- Select Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the driver associated with the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
If the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler service first:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Return to Print server properties and remove the old package.
Do not delete random files from the spool directory. The package includes more than the named DLL, including driver metadata, catalogs, printer description files, user-interface components, registry settings, and spooler configuration.
Add the printer again after the old package is removed. If the manufacturer supplies both a legacy Pscript package and a current driver, use the current package unless the printer specifically requires the older one.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit legacy driver may have worked on an older 32-bit Windows installation but fail after moving to Windows 10 or Windows 11 on a 64-bit computer.
Check your Windows architecture
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
You will normally see whether the installation is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Match the driver to Windows
For 64-bit Windows:
- install a signed 64-bit driver;
- do not place a 32-bit DLL in
C:WindowsSystem32; - do not assume a file marked “x64” on an unofficial download page is valid;
- check whether the printer manufacturer offers a current PostScript, PCL, or IPP driver.
If no compatible 64-bit driver exists, the practical fix may be to use a supported modern driver or replace the old printer. Compatibility mode cannot turn a 32-bit kernel printer driver into a 64-bit driver.
A 32-bit application can still run on 64-bit Windows, but that does not make a 32-bit printer driver acceptable to the 64-bit print subsystem. If only one old program requests pscript4.dll, repair that program as well as the printer configuration.

Fix 4: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the error began after a failed update, disk problem, system cleanup, or other Windows corruption. They are secondary checks for this particular file because a printer-driver DLL may belong to an installed driver package rather than the protected Windows component store.
Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source. Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

Possible results include:
- No integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact. Repair the printer package instead.
- Corrupt files were repaired: restart and test the printer again.
- Some files could not be repaired: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result does not change, continue with driver removal and manufacturer-driver installation.
Do not expect SFC to restore every historical printer-driver file. A clean SFC result does not prove that an old printer package is complete.
If you would rather avoid repeatedly guessing whether Windows or a driver package is responsible, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; the repair is performed by the full version, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the direct manual path.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a printer component after a false positive or after detecting a genuinely unsafe modified file.

- Check its original path, publisher, and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- it came from a trusted printer installer;
- the package is digitally signed or otherwise verified;
- the printer manufacturer confirms the component;
- a fresh security scan does not identify it as unsafe.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device. Microsoft Protection History guidance
If the file came from a random DLL site, do not restore it. Remove the unofficial copy and reinstall the printer package from Windows Update or the manufacturer.
Fix 6: Repair the old application or printer utility
If the message appears only when one old application starts, that application may have a hard-coded dependency on an obsolete printer component.
First identify the requesting program:
- Note the complete error text and the window title.
- Check whether the error appears only when printing or also at startup.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Check the Startup apps tab for an old printer utility.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, typing
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the error.
- Check the printer’s Properties and Driver information for the package name.
If the program has a repair option, use it:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Choose Repair.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall it using the original vendor installer.
If the application expects an NT-era printer driver, compatibility mode may not be enough. Use a current printer driver or a supported replacement application where possible.

Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering components that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference
A printer graphics or driver DLL should not be registered merely because Windows says it is missing. Running:
regsvr32 pscript4.dll
will usually produce another error or change nothing. It also does not recreate the driver’s INF file, catalog, PPD, registry entries, dependencies, or spooler configuration.
Use the printer installer and Windows printer-management tools instead.

What not to do
Avoid these common fixes:
- downloading
pscript4.dllfrom a DLL-mirror site; - copying an unknown file into
System32; - copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit driver location;
- replacing the file in an application folder without identifying the application;
- running
regsvr32repeatedly; - deleting files from the spool-driver folders manually;
- restoring an antivirus detection without checking provenance;
- installing a Pscript driver when the printer requires PCL, GDI, or IPP.
An isolated DLL may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a missing dependency. Even a genuine copy does not recreate the rest of the printer-driver package.
There is no current official Microsoft download page that distributes pscript4.dll as a standalone file. The safe replacement source is the complete printer package supplied through Windows Update or the printer manufacturer.
Can Windows Features restore pscript4.dll?
Usually not. Turn Windows features on or off manages optional Windows components, not arbitrary printer-driver packages.
Recommended Free Tools
To check it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
Do not enable unrelated features in an attempt to restore the DLL. Repair the printer package through Printers & scanners, Windows Update, or the manufacturer’s installer.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep the printer’s current signed driver installer.
- Create a restore point before replacing a working legacy printer package.
- Remove old printer drivers through Print server properties rather than deleting spool files.
- Confirm the printer’s supported language before choosing PostScript or PCL.
- Avoid driver packages that do not match the Windows architecture.
- Recheck Windows Security Protection history after driver installation.
- If a printer is old, plan a move to a current manufacturer driver or Microsoft’s IPP-based printing path.
FAQ
Is pscript4.dll a Windows system file?
It is a genuine Microsoft printer-driver component associated with Windows NT printer infrastructure. It is not guaranteed to be present on every current Windows installation.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX DLL?
No. pscript4.dll is associated with legacy PostScript printing, not Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game runtime.
Can I download it separately?
That is unsafe and usually ineffective. Install the complete printer-driver package through Windows Update or the printer manufacturer.
Why does an application ask for a printer DLL?
The application may initialize its printing subsystem at startup, use an old printer utility, or load a legacy driver package. Identify the requesting executable rather than assuming the application itself is damaged.
Will SFC restore it?
SFC may repair protected Windows files, but it may report no problem when a printer-driver package is incomplete. Reinstalling the printer package is the more direct repair.
Why does the error say “specified module could not be found”?
Windows may be unable to find the named DLL, or a dependency required by that DLL may be missing. Reinstalling the complete driver package addresses both situations more reliably than copying one file.
What if the error keeps returning?
Remove the printer and its driver package, restart Windows, install the correct driver architecture, and check whether antivirus is quarantining the package. If only one old application triggers the message, repair or replace that application after identifying it.
