Which fix applies to you
Start with the description that best matches what happened:
- The error appears while printing or adding a printer: reinstall or update that printer’s official driver first.
- Several printers fail, or Windows has recently crashed or failed to update: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The problem began after antivirus software detected or quarantined the file: check quarantine before replacing anything.
- A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows reports the error: check the printer driver’s architecture and the application’s printing configuration.
- The file exists but Windows says it is incompatible: remove the old driver package and install a matching current package.
- A game or ordinary application reports the file without any printing activity: check whether it uses Windows printing indirectly.
pscript5.dllis not a DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ runtime file. - The file is outside a normal Windows printer-driver directory or has no valid Microsoft signature: scan the computer before attempting repairs.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. pscript5.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with PostScript printer drivers, and copying an isolated file usually does not restore the complete driver package.

What pscript5.dll does
pscript5.dll is identified as PostScript Printer Driver. It is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system and is published by Microsoft Corporation.
A PostScript printer driver translates print instructions from Windows or an application into PostScript data that a compatible printer can process. The DLL is therefore part of the Windows printing subsystem and a printer-driver package, rather than a general-purpose application library.
A program may mention the file even when you did not deliberately open printer settings. Applications can access Windows printing components when they:

The affected printer does not necessarily have to be physically connected at the moment. A damaged or partially removed driver package can remain registered in Windows and continue being called by the print spooler or an application.
Microsoft’s overview of the Windows printing architecture and printer drivers is available in its printer-driver documentation.
Where Windows stores the file
The exact location depends on the Windows release, system architecture, driver package, and installation state. Common printer-driver directories include:
%windir%System32spooldriversx643
for 64-bit driver files, and:
%windir%System32spooldriversW32X863
for 32-bit driver files on 64-bit Windows.
These are not universal paths. To inspect a location:

pscript5.dll.
Do not assume that finding a file with the correct name proves that it is the correct file. Check its properties, location, version, and digital signature. A valid installation should normally place it in a printer-driver directory managed by Windows or the printer-driver package.
The supplied historical records include these examples:
| Architecture | Recorded versions | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 0.3.9600.16459, 0.3.9600.16384, 0.3.9200.16451, 0.3.9200.16420, 0.3.9200.16384, 0.3.7601.17514 | 0.52–0.53 MB |
| 64-bit | 0.3.7600.16385 | 0.60 MB |
These are historical records, not a current inventory for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. The installed version depends on Windows servicing, architecture, and the printer-driver package.
Fix 1: Restart and test the printing path
A temporary spooler or printer communication problem can produce a misleading missing-file message.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Save your work.
- Turn off the printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Turn the printer back on after Windows has loaded.
- Try printing a simple document.
If printing works, the original problem may have been temporary. If the same error returns, continue with the driver repair rather than copying a DLL.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the printer driver
A corrupt, incomplete, or mismatched PostScript driver is the most likely cause when the message appears during printing or printer installation.
Remove the printer in Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Remove the printer in Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After the restart, return to the same printer settings page and select Add device. Allow Windows to search for the printer. If Windows does not find it, select the option to add the printer manually where available.
For a manufacturer-supplied package, use the printer maker’s official support channel and select the package for your exact printer model and Windows architecture. Prefer a complete driver installer over a loose DLL. If the printer is managed by a workplace print server, ask the administrator for the approved package instead of installing a random local file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRemove stale driver entries
Removing the printer does not always remove every driver package. Old entries can continue pointing to a missing or incompatible pscript5.dll.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Select the driver belonging to the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the approved printer driver again.
Do not remove a driver that is still used by another working printer. If Windows says the driver is in use, remove the associated printer queues first and restart the Print Spooler service before trying again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which device packages are stale, although the printer manufacturer’s package remains the appropriate source for a model-specific driver. Its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version.
Use Device Manager to check architecture and driver status
Device Manager is useful for identifying a failed or incorrectly installed printer device, though printer drivers may also be managed through the printer settings and driver-store tools.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues or Printers.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed but the error remains, remove the printer and its driver package as described above. Repeating Update Driver alone may leave the damaged package in place.
A 64-bit Windows installation can use separate 64-bit and 32-bit printer components. A 32-bit application may also rely on a 32-bit printing path. Install a driver that supports the Windows architecture and the application or print workflow involved. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver directory, or the reverse.
Fix 3: Repair damaged Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows component repair when the issue affects multiple printers, appeared after a failed update or abrupt shutdown, or remains after reinstalling the printer driver.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired component store. Microsoft documents both commands in its System File Checker and DISM repair guidance.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
A successful completion reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports an error, record the message, restart Windows, and try the command again with an active internet connection. Persistent DISM failures may indicate deeper component-store, servicing, or disk problems.
Run SFC
After DISM finishes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired damaged files, or could not repair some files. Restart Windows after a repair, then test the printer.
If SFC could not repair everything:
- Make sure DISM completed successfully.
- Restart Windows.
- Open an administrator Terminal or Command Prompt again.
- Run
sfc /scannowa second time. - Test printing.
- If it still fails, preserve the CBS log mentioned in the SFC result and investigate disk health, recent servicing failures, or a Windows repair installation.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of identifying damaged components less tedious by showing what its scan finds; the repair function is completed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the built-in Microsoft repair path.
Fix 4: Restart the Print Spooler
The spooler manages print jobs and loads printer-driver components. Restarting it can clear a stale queue, but it does not repair a damaged driver package.
Use the Services console
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
- Try printing again.
If Restart is unavailable, select Stop, wait briefly, then select Start.
Use administrator commands
Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
net stop spooler
net start spooler
If the first command reports that the service stopped successfully and the second starts it successfully, retry the print operation. If jobs remain stuck, remove the printer, clear its queue, restart the spooler, and reinstall the driver.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not delete spooler files or driver-store files manually unless you are following a documented Microsoft or manufacturer procedure. Manual deletion can leave Windows with incomplete printer records.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate driver component, or it can block a modified file. Treat both possibilities carefully.
- Open your security product.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent area.
- Search for
pscript5.dll. - Check the reported file location and detection details.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
- If you determine that the detection is a false positive, restore the file through the security product.
- Update the security product.
- Run a full scan.
- Reinstall the complete printer driver if Windows still reports the file as missing.
If the file was outside a normal Windows printer-driver directory, had an invalid Microsoft signature, or was detected as malicious, leave it quarantined and perform a full or offline scan. A missing file does not prove malware, but an unauthorized replacement should not be trusted.
Fix 6: Verify the file without replacing it manually
After repair or driver installation, confirm that Windows is using the correct component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the printer-driver directory shown earlier.
- Right-click
pscript5.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description identifies it as PostScript Printer Driver.
- Review the file version and size without treating historical values as universal requirements.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
Also verify the driver:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Open its properties or printer properties.
- Print a test page.
A successful test page confirms that the printer queue and driver can communicate. If the DLL exists and is signed but the application still fails, the application may be requesting an incompatible legacy component or using a separate 32-bit printing path.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that support self-registration, commonly through COM or ActiveX registration. pscript5.dll is a printer-driver component, not normally a self-registering COM library.
Running a command such as:
regsvr32 pscript5.dll
does not install the printer driver, restore its dependencies, repair the driver store, or reconnect the printer queue. It may produce a registration error that adds confusion.
Use the complete Windows or printer-driver package instead. Only use regsvr32 when the specific software vendor or Microsoft documentation explicitly says that the particular DLL is self-registering and provides the correct command.
Why DLL download sites websites are unsafe
Do not download pscript5.dll from an arbitrary DLL website and copy it into System32, a printer-driver folder, or an application directory.
Rank #3
A loose download may have:
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependencies
- An invalid or altered signature
- A different servicing level
- Malware or unwanted software
- No matching printer-driver configuration
Even a genuine-looking file may not fix the underlying driver package. The safe sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, the printer manufacturer’s official driver package, or an approved organizational print server.
Fix 7: Consider System Restore after a known recent change
System Restore is appropriate when printing worked until a clearly identifiable recent driver, software, or Windows change and the normal reinstall and component repairs did not help.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not a substitute for backing up personal files, and it does not guarantee that every printer package will be restored. Afterward, reinstall the printer driver if necessary.
Fix 8: Investigate disk damage or malware
If files repeatedly disappear, Windows reports filesystem errors, or repairs fail again after succeeding, investigate the storage device.
- Back up important documents.
- Review Event Viewer for recent disk, filesystem, servicing, or driver errors.
- Run the storage manufacturer’s approved diagnostic.
- Follow the manufacturer’s repair or replacement guidance.
- Perform a full or offline malware scan if the file location or signature is suspicious.
Do not keep replacing pscript5.dll manually when Windows cannot retain repaired files. Repeated corruption can point to a broader system or storage problem.
If only one application reports the error
A game or ordinary application that names pscript5.dll may be invoking Windows printing indirectly, using a report or print-preview component, or carrying an obsolete printing integration.
Check whether the error appears when:
- Opening a print dialog
- Viewing a print preview
- Exporting a report
- Selecting a printer
- Starting a background reporting task
If the problem occurs only inside one program, update or reinstall that program after repairing the printer path. Do not install Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears. Those packages are not the default remedy for pscript5.dll.

Prevention
- Keep Windows updated.
- Install printer drivers through Windows Update or the printer manufacturer.
- Remove old printer queues and driver packages before switching printer models.
- Avoid driver packages intended for a different Windows architecture.
- Do not use disk-cleanup utilities that remove printer-driver files without explaining what they are removing.
- Check antivirus quarantine before assuming a file was never installed.
- Keep backups before attempting System Restore or storage repairs.
- Record the printer model and driver version after a successful installation.
FAQ
Is pscript5.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is identified as the Microsoft Windows PostScript Printer Driver component and is associated with Windows printer-driver packages.
Does every printer need pscript5.dll?
No. The file is associated with PostScript printer-driver functionality. A non-PostScript printer may not use it, but an installed legacy or removed PostScript queue can still leave Windows or an application referencing it.
Is `pscript5.dll a virus?
The filename alone does not prove that it is malicious. Check its location, Microsoft publisher information, and digital signature. A file outside a normal Windows printer-driver directory or with an invalid signature deserves a security scan.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows release, servicing level, architecture, or printer-driver package. Reinstall the complete approved driver instead.
Where is the 32-bit copy?
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit printer-driver files commonly appear below:
%windir%System32spooldriversW32X863
The exact location can vary. A 32-bit Windows installation has a different driver layout.
Where is the 64-bit copy?
A common location is:
%windir%System32spooldriversx643
This is a typical location, not a universal promise for every Windows version or driver package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill sfc /scannow fix it?
It can repair protected Windows files when Windows component corruption is involved. If the missing file belongs to a damaged printer-driver package, reinstalling the complete printer driver is usually the more direct repair.
Why did the error start after removing my printer?
Printer removal can leave a stale queue, driver-store entry, or application reference. Remove the old driver package, restart the spooler, restart Windows, and install the correct driver again.
What if the repaired file is present but printing still fails?
Check the printer queue, restart the Print Spooler, verify the driver provider and architecture, and print a test page. A present DLL does not prove that the complete driver package or queue is healthy.
