pshook.dll errors usually mean the application that owns the file is damaged, incomplete, or no longer compatible with Windows. The filename is also used by more than one program, so the safe fix is to identify the parent application before replacing anything.
The best-documented version is the PowerStrip Hook Library, supplied with EnTech Taiwan’s PowerStrip display-configuration utility. The same filename is also used by Punto Switcher, Yandex’s keyboard-layout utility. Those DLLs are not interchangeable.

Start with the full file path
The path is more useful than the filename. A missing-file dialog may identify the application, while an antivirus alert, crash report, or Event Viewer entry may show the exact location.
Check the error dialog
- Read the title bar of the error window.
- Note the executable named in the message, if shown.
- Look for a full path such as an application folder, game directory, or startup location.
- Write down whether the message says the file is missing, cannot be loaded, is corrupted, or has an entry-point problem.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because pshook.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “pshook.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading pshook.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in pshook.dll.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”
The wording changes the investigation. A missing-file message often points to deletion or an incomplete installation. “Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of pshook.dll is missing even when the file itself is present. An entry-point or “not designed to run” message can indicate a damaged binary, an architecture mismatch, or incompatible old software.
Check Event Viewer
If the dialog does not identify the owner:
- Press Windows key, type
Event Viewer, and open it. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- In the right pane, click Filter Current Log.
- Set Logged to the period when the error occurred.
- Review entries marked Error.
- Open a matching event and inspect Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and Application path.
The application path tells you which program requested the DLL. Do not treat the listed faulting module as proof that it is the only damaged component.

If Windows Security or the application reports a problem but the file is still present:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown in the alert or error.
- Right-click

- Check the Digital Signatures tab when available.
- Compare the folder with the installed program that should own it.
The PowerStrip variant is described as PowerStrip Hook Library and is associated with EnTech Taiwan. Public metadata also identifies known PowerStrip records as 32-bit or x86, but third-party version and hash records should not be treated as a universal definition of every file named pshook.dll.
A file outside the expected application directory, with no matching publisher, or flagged by security software deserves additional scrutiny.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most reliable repair because the installer restores the correct DLL beside the correct executable and supplies any related files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the owner is PowerStrip
PowerStrip is legacy software, so first decide whether you still need it.
To remove and reinstall it:
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for PowerStrip.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer only from EnTech Taiwan’s official PowerStrip page.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows again and test the program.
If the application offers a repair option in Programs and Features, use that before uninstalling:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select PowerStrip.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart.
If PowerStrip installs but still fails, the problem may be compatibility rather than a missing DLL. Right-click its shortcut, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use compatibility settings only as a test. Do not force the program to run by copying an unrelated DLL into its folder or into a Windows directory.
If you no longer use PowerStrip, uninstalling it is safer than restoring an old hook library. Remove any leftover startup entry only after confirming it belongs to PowerStrip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the owner is Punto Switcher
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for Punto Switcher.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the Windows installer from Yandex’s official Punto Switcher page.
- Run the installer and accept the normal installation location.
- Restart Windows and test the keyboard-layout utility.
If the installer offers repair or modification, choose repair first. If it does not, uninstalling, restarting, and installing a fresh copy is the cleanest route.
Do not place the PowerStrip version of pshook.dll in the Punto Switcher directory. The matching filenames do not make the files interchangeable.
If the error appears in a game
A game may be loading the DLL directly, or an overlay, keyboard utility, display utility, or security product may be interfering.
- Open the game launcher.
- Find the game in your library.
- Open its settings or manage menu.
- Select Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the launcher to replace damaged files.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the game with overlays temporarily disabled.
If verification reports no problem, inspect the exact application path in Event Viewer. Do not copy a DLL from PowerStrip or Punto Switcher into the game directory unless the game’s own publisher specifically identifies that file as part of its installation.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove a hook DLL because hook modules interact with keyboard, display, or input activity. Quarantine does not prove that the file was malicious, but a familiar filename does not prove that a particular copy is safe.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand the detection associated with
pshook.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Compare the path with the PowerStrip or Punto Switcher installation directory.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- You installed the parent program from its official vendor source.
- The quarantine path matches that program’s installation folder.
- The file’s product and publisher details are consistent.
- You have scanned the computer and found no related suspicious files.
- You are prepared to reinstall the parent application if the alert returns.
If the path is in a temporary folder, a user profile subfolder, a random game directory, or a location unrelated to the supposed owner, leave it quarantined. Uninstall the associated program if necessary and run a full scan.
After a legitimate quarantine event, reinstalling the parent application is preferable to manually restoring the quarantined file. The installer supplies the intended copy and can repair related files.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The Windows edition and the application architecture are separate issues. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer. It still needs the application’s compatible 32-bit DLL.
Public records describe the documented PowerStrip and Punto Switcher variants as x86. That does not authorize using any arbitrary 32-bit copy with either program.
A wrong architecture can produce messages such as:
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- A failure that occurs immediately after replacing the DLL.
To check the application:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open Details and note the product information.
- Check the vendor’s installer or documentation for its supported architecture.
To check Windows:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Read System type.
Do not use the System type screen to decide where to copy pshook.dll. System32 contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Neither folder is an appropriate home for this third-party application DLL.
Restore the correct architecture by reinstalling the parent program. If a 32-bit application needs a missing dependency, install only the runtime identified by that application’s installer or dependency analysis. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random.
Fix 4: Investigate a missing dependency
Windows may report that the specified module cannot be found even when pshook.dll is visible in the application folder. In that case, a second DLL required by pshook.dll may be absent, damaged, or incompatible.
Use this order:
- Reinstall or repair the parent application.
- Check the application’s installation log, support documentation, or repair dialog.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify the exact missing module.
- Install the dependency only from Microsoft or the application vendor.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not infer that a Microsoft runtime is required merely because the error mentions a DLL. There is no verified basis for automatically associating this particular file with a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX, or .NET.
If a game launcher has a Verify files or Repair files function, use it before changing Windows components. If a keyboard or display utility has its own updater, use that updater or reinstall the utility.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall related drivers
A display utility can fail after a graphics-driver change, especially when the utility is obsolete. This does not mean that a graphics driver will recreate pshook.dll; the driver and the application are separate installations.
To check the display driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware vendor provides a suitable update.
- If the failure began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean driver repair, download the correct driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer, uninstall the old package only according to that vendor’s instructions, install the replacement, and restart. Do not expect this process to repair an absent PowerStrip or Punto Switcher file.
When driver hunting means comparing hardware models, architecture, and release packages by hand, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale; its full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the application that owns pshook.dll remains the definitive fix when the DLL itself is missing.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also failing
pshook.dll is not a Windows system component. DISM and System File Checker normally will not recreate the PowerStrip or Punto Switcher DLL.
Use these commands when Windows itself is malfunctioning, protected system files appear damaged, or several unrelated applications are failing. Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- At the prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks and repairs protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns pshook.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Repeatedly running SFC without identifying what changed is not a useful repair strategy. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling PowerStrip, Punto Switcher, or the affected game.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It registers libraries that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components.
The documented PowerStrip and Punto Switcher files are application hook modules. There is no verified evidence that these pshook.dll variants require COM registration.
Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair a missing or damaged application file:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →regsvr32 pshook.dll
It may return an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not mean Windows needs another copy of the DLL.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official instructions explicitly identify that DLL as a self-registering component and provide the correct path and command.
What not to do
Do not download pshook.dll from a DLL repository
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong product variant, the wrong architecture, or a file that is incompatible with the installed application. Even a clean file may not fix the missing dependency that caused the error.
The safe sources are:
- EnTech Taiwan’s official PowerStrip installer for PowerStrip.
- Yandex’s official Windows installer for Punto Switcher.
- The affected game or application’s official launcher and installer.
- Microsoft for Windows components and Microsoft redistributables when a dependency check specifically identifies one.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
This can create version conflicts, hide the real installation problem, and leave the application loading a file that does not belong to it. Restore the DLL beside the executable that owns it by repairing or reinstalling that application.
Do not swap the two known variants
A PowerStrip hook library is not a replacement for Punto Switcher’s hook module. The shared filename is the source of the confusion.
Do not whitelist a suspicious file by filename alone
A hook DLL can be legitimate, but malware can use a familiar name. Confirm the path, publisher, signature, and parent program before allowing it.
Do not install runtimes at random
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET may be relevant to some applications, but no general runtime remedy is established for pshook.dll. Install one only when the application installer or dependency analysis identifies it.
If the repair still fails
If reinstalling the identified application does not help:
- Confirm that the error points to the same executable and folder.
- Check Windows Security → Protection history again.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an application-specific crash log.
- Test with overlays, keyboard utilities, and display utilities disabled.
- Check whether the program is obsolete or unsupported on the current Windows release.
- Try System Restore only if the problem began immediately after a known software change and no installer or quarantine repair is available.
For PowerStrip, removal may be the correct resolution if the utility no longer works with the current graphics hardware or Windows version. Use a supported display-driver utility instead of forcing a legacy hook DLL to load.
FAQ
Is pshook.dll a Windows system file?
No. The documented file belongs to third-party applications, most notably PowerStrip and Punto Switcher. It should not normally be stored in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is pshook.dll always PowerStrip’s file?
No. PowerStrip uses the name, but Punto Switcher also has a separate hook DLL with that filename. Identify the owner from the full path and requesting executable.
Can I fix the error by copying the DLL from another computer?
That is unsafe. The other computer may have a different product variant, architecture, application version, or dependency set. Repair the owning application instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will SFC restore pshook.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party application files. Use it only when there are broader signs of Windows component corruption.
Should I run regsvr32 pshook.dll?
Usually no. This DLL is not established as a COM or ActiveX library requiring registration. Reinstall the application that owns it.
Does installing Visual C++ fix the problem?
Only if dependency analysis or the parent application specifically identifies a Visual C++ runtime. Do not install redistributables based on the filename alone.
What if the file exists but Windows says it is missing?
The message may refer to a dependency of pshook.dll, or the file may be damaged or the wrong architecture. Reinstall the parent application first, then investigate dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the safest fix for old PowerStrip installations?
If you still need PowerStrip, reinstall it from EnTech Taiwan’s official installer and test compatibility. If it no longer works on the current system, uninstall it rather than copying old DLLs into Windows folders.
